Puppy attacked with machete in St. Lucia finds ‘fur-ever' home in Ont.

Gibby, the dog formerly known as Gabriel, sat in the grass in Guelph, Ont. on July 18, 2025. (Alexandra Holyk/CTV News) After a brutal machete attack in the Caribbean, a nearly-five-month-old puppy has found his forever home in Guelph, Ont. Gibby, formerly known as Gabriel, was found in May by a surveyor doing work on a remote beach in St. Lucia. With little to no options, the surveyor contacted Helpaws – a non-profit animal rescue located on the island. 'He was just on the ground, sand everywhere, completely dehydrated,' recalled Kisha St. Romain, Helpaws operations manager. 'His tongue was hanging out, there were maggots in his mouth, he couldn't eat or drink anything.' (Submitted: Renee Fleming) After the island vet recommended euthanasia due to a lack of resources, Helpaws contacted Renee Fleming, a veterinarian at Guelph Animal Hospital, who had worked with the rescue on spay and neuter missions. 'We brought him back from St. Lucia and he had an initial few surgeries for his trauma,' said Fleming. After a few treatments and tests, the pup was given a second chance at life and it was time to find him a loving family. Luckily, he didn't have to go far. (Alexandra Holyk/CTV News) Fleming said she didn't plan on adopting Gibby when she first met him, but after spending weeks together, it seemed like the perfect fit. 'I couldn't imagine our lives without him,' she said. According to St. Romain, Helpaws received numerous applications to adopt Gibby. 'We were not expecting it,' St. Romain said about the eventual adoption. 'But it was a great outcome. We couldn't have asked for somebody better to adopt him.' (Alexandra Holyk/CTV News) Leading up to Gibby's adoption, the rescue started a GoFundMe page to cover the cost of his care, surpassing their goal of US$25,000. 'It's so nice to see that they were able to raise so much money in his name,' said Fleming. 'But we're able to care for him moving forward.' Fleming said the funds will go to other animals who need help, something St. Romain said is ever-growing. 'All of that money is now going towards these dogs that need the care that they couldn't receive here on the island,' St. Romain said. 'At this point, we just want him to be happy and live the best life that he can have,' Fleming said.

It's cute & looks like a teddy – but there's another reason people think a fluffy crossbreed is the ‘perfect' dog

PAW-FECT Scroll down to find out Britains favourite dog breeds A FLUFFY little furball is sending TikTok into meltdown and fans reckon it could be the most paw-fect pup ever. Known online as Honey, this adorable teddy-bear lookalike is melting hearts across social media with his big brown eyes and soft golden coat. 2 2 But there's more to this pup than just cuteness. She doesn't shed at all, making her an absolute dream for allergy sufferers and clean freaks alike. Honey is a Pomapoo, a cross between a Pomeranian and a Poodle, and she's got nearly 30,000 fans swooning over her cuddly good looks. With her tiny size and teddy-like fluff, it's no wonder the internet has fallen in love. One TikTok user gushed: 'So cute!' Another dubbed her: 'the most perfect dog.' Others chimed in with 'Looks like a teddy bear' and 'She's unreal.' Pomapoos are what's known as a "designer dog".\ They're a mix of two breeds, combining the smarts and low-shedding coat of a Poodle with the playful, outgoing personality of a Pomeranian. The result is a clever, affectionate little companion who loves cuddles as much as a game of fetch. Padraig Harrington's dog plays hilariously cute role in Irish golfer's US Senior Open celebrations Standing just eight to 12 inches tall, Pomapoos are perfect for flats or houses alike. But don't be fooled by their tiny size, they've got big personalities and love being the centre of attention. Honey's owner shared her adorable antics on TikTok, showing her prancing around like she owns the place. But while this mix is winning fans left and right, not everyone in the dog world is sold on the poodle cross trend. One dog groomer has warned that these 'doodles' – crosses like Goldendoodles, Bernedoodles and yes, Pomapoos – can be a bit of a nightmare if not properly cared for. Emma Badgley, a professional groomer, says many owners underestimate just how high-maintenance these breeds can be. 'Doodle owners are often clueless about the grooming needs,' she moaned in a post on Quora. 'Some of the most matted dogs I've ever seen have been doodles – and trying to groom them when they're knotted and wriggly is seriously stressful.' She added that big poodle mixes like Goldendoodles and Saint Berdoodles can be especially tough, because they've got the energy of a toddler and coats that demand constant brushing. Even smaller breeds like Pomapoos aren't completely fuss-free. If they inherit the Poodle's curls, they'll need regular grooming to stop their hair turning into a tangled mess. Britain's favourite dog breeds HERE are the top ten dog breeds in the UK.... Labrador Retriever Renowned for their friendly and outgoing nature. Popular as both family pets and working dogs. French Bulldog Known for their distinctive bat-like ears and affectionate temperament. Ideal for city living due to their small size. Cocker Spaniel Beloved for their playful and loyal disposition. Excellent companions for active families. Pug Recognised for their charming wrinkled faces and sociable nature. Adaptable to various living environments. Staffordshire Bull Terrier Valued for their courageous and loving character. Strong and muscular build, yet gentle with children. Dachshund Adored for their distinctive long bodies and lively personality. Comes in a variety of coat types: smooth, wire, and long-haired. Border Collie Celebrated for their intelligence and energy. Excellent working dogs, especially in herding. Golden Retriever Known for their friendly and tolerant attitude. Great family pets and skilled in various service roles. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Cherished for their gentle and affectionate nature. Small size makes them perfect for lap dogs. German Shepherd Admired for their loyalty and versatility. Commonly used in police and military roles due to their trainability. And that's not all, some popular breeds like Huskies, German Shepherds and Newfoundlands were called out for being 'anxious' and 'a lot of work' by the same groomer. So, while Honey might look like a living teddy bear, there's a bit of effort behind the fluff. Still, if you're ready to commit to grooming and want a cute, clever, and snuggly sidekick, a Pomapoo could just be your perfect match.

Camilla smitten with Battersea puppy as she opens dog-friendly garden

The Queen was left smitten with a tiny puppy when she opened a dog-friendly garden at a leading animal sanctuary. Camilla declared 'I'd have taken him' when told the once homeless tiny Jack Russell cross had found an owner during a visit to Battersea Dogs and Cats Home. The Queen officially launched the garden, co-designed for dogs by TV gardener and author Monty Don, at the charity in south London after it was first unveiled at the Chelsea Flower Show before moving to its new site. She told guests who included celebrity supporters Amanda Holden, Sue Perkins, David Gandy and Dame Jacqueline Wilson she had followed the garden's progress. She said: 'I feel like I've watched it grow up. 'I saw it at the planning stage, I saw it at Chelsea, and I've seen it here, where it's going to be so wonderful for all the dogs to roam around.' Camilla has taken in three rescue dogs from the famous animal sanctuary over the years, with her latest pet called Moley, but she said the animal was left at home because of the hot weather. When the Queen first arrived, she was greeted by some of Battersea's more cuddly resident dogs, including seven-week-old Dipsy who she tickled behind the ear. When told by Nake Florin, the charity's behaviour manager responsible for animal wellbeing who held the diminutive puppy in one hand, the dog had been adopted by one of the charity's staff she made the group laugh with her comment about missing out on the dog. Broadcaster Holden later said she made Camilla laugh when she told her about her husband's response to their rescue dog Mini rolling onto its back for its stomach to be tickled whenever he sees the pet. The TV presenter, a Battersea ambassador for 12 years, said of her partner: 'My husband said why can't you be more like that.' She said about the Queen: 'She's just one of those people that's genuinely nuts about dogs.' During the visit Camilla toured the dog-friendly garden, which features a lawn, trees and shrubs, and saw one of the pets jump into a small pond and run about the borders. Don said later: 'It wasn't about relocating a Chelsea garden, Chelsea was a stage of the journey to here and I quite like the fact it's changed. 'We haven't just plonked down a Chelsea garden, we've changed the site and made it work for the dogs. 'We wanted the dogs to run and leap and jump and roll and sniff, whereas at the Chelsea garden it was too precious.'

Video: Golden Retriever Puppy Wears a Tie for the First Time & Charms the Internet

Playing dress up with your furry baby never gets old, even though they don't need an outfit to steal hearts. It's also true that there doesn't have to be an occasion to put on their best clothes, and the same goes for our pets. So, it made complete sense when this dog owner shared the most adorable video of his Golden Retriever puppy looking all suited up in a tie and his utterly loveable personality. The pooch didn't just look like a distinguished gentleman, but acted like one, too, spreading charm like confetti and leaving a trail of admirers. If you have been thinking about getting your pet an outfit, this is your sign to suit them up for no reason at all. A too-adorable-to-handle Instagram video showed how a dog dad dressed up his Golden Retriever puppy with a tie, instantly creating a fan club for the little guy. 'Tell me if you guys think this is cute?' the owner, Jack Ruff, said as he looked into the front camera before switching to the back one to show the distinguished gentlemen who stood in front of him like a total heartthrob. The clip then showed Buddy, the Golden pup, proudly standing in front of his dad in his outfit of the day, which was a tie. Furthermore, the caption read his inner thoughts, sharing that this was his 'first time wearing a tie.' The text continued to explain how it took the dog 'forever to figure out how to tie it.' Back to the video, it captured the pooch appeared to be as dashing as ever, with a confident grin on his face on what seemed like a good fur day, while his eyes glistened like literal beads with happiness. Ruff continued hyping up his Golden Retriever puppy in the Instagram video, which has since gone viral, amassing thousands of likes. 'Owwww, the boy,' he praised the dog, who shyly looked away for a brief moment before turning his gaze back toward the camera. The dog owner remarked, 'My handsome,' and a smile popped up on Buddy's face. Commenters agreed he looked like a nobleman. 'What a distinguished gentleman,' wrote one user, while another pointed out how 'proud' he appeared.
