Iraq's Basra governorate awards mega desalination project to Sino-Iraqi consortium
Iraq's Basra Governorate has awarded a major seawater desalination project to a consortium comprising Iraq's Al-Rida Group and Power Construction Corporation of China (PowerChina) Mobilisation for the 1 million cubic metres per day (m3/day) project, which will use reverse osmosis technology, has started, a statement issued by the Basra governor's office said. The project scope also includes a dedicated power station to secure uninterrupted electricity for operations, and a 240-kilometre water transmission network connecting to nine main distribution centres across the governorate. The statement didn't disclose project costs or timelines. PowerChina has delivered over seven desalination projects in the region, including the 900,000 m³/day Taweelah plant in Abu Dhabi, the world's largest reverse osmosis facility, and the Rabigh 3 and Jubail plants in Saudi Arabia (600,000 m³/day each). New desalination phase to boost Kuwait's water reserves by 60mln gallons daily
KUWAIT CITY - The bid opening date for Doha West Seawater Reverse Osmosis Desalination Plant, along with equipment to increase the alkalinity of the produced water (Phase II) , will be on July 22, sources from the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy say. Sources pointed out that if the project bids are opened and the deadline is not postponed, the Central Agency for Public Tenders (CAPT) will refer the bids to the ministry for review and preparation of technical recommendations within one month of the award date. Based on the recommendation, a decision will be made on the company with the best bid and the required conditions and specifications, sources explained. Sources added that the award decision of CAPT will be pave the way for sending the tender documents to the State Audit Bureau (SAB) for study, review and audit. Sources confirmed that the bureau will then approve the contract to start the implementation of the project, which the ministry is counting on to increase the strategic reserve of fresh water to meet the growing demand for water. Sources expect the station to increase the strategic water reserve by 60 million imperial gallons per day of potable water without the need to mix it with groundwater -- an advantage of reverse osmosis technology. Sources also confirmed the commitment of the ministry to implement all of its development projects, particularly those related to electricity and water production, to meet the increasing demand for electricity and water annually. Saudi Arabia breaks two new Guinness records in water desalination technology
The Saudi Water Authority (SWA) has received two Guinness World Records certificates, representing major milestones that highlight the Kingdom's prominent role in the global water sector. The records were presented during a ceremony held yesterday at the authority's headquarters in Riyadh, with Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture Abdulrahman Alfadley in attendance, along with a delegation from Guinness World Records, Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported. The first record acknowledged the world's largest seawater desalination plant utilizing reverse osmosis (RO) technology, part of Phase II of the Al-Khobar Production System project. This facility boasts a production capacity of 670,852.4 cubic meters per day and was constructed on the smallest land area worldwide for a facility of its size, achieved through innovative technical methodologies and value engineering. The record was officially registered on February 25, 2025. The plant recorded a 1.7 kWh per cubic meter during the salt separation stage, with a total energy consumption of 2.34 kWh per cubic meter—the lowest ever documented globally. This achievement was noted during the construction of the Shuaibah Plant (Phase V) on April 22, 2025, and received commendation from the World Bank. With this accomplishment, the authority surpassed the Kingdom's previous record of 2.27 kWh per cubic meter, establishing a new global benchmark. These two recent achievements elevate SWA's total number of Guinness World Records to 11, further solidifying Saudi Arabia's position as a global center of excellence and innovation in the water sector, while emphasizing its critical role in fostering a more sustainable future for water resources.
