Sadness at passing of well known Irish trainer who put Davy Russell on the map

The Irish racing community is in mourning following the passing away of a well known and successful trainer. Wexford-based handler Michael Cullen sadly died earlier this week following a long battle with Motor neurone disease. He saddled many winners between 1996 and 2015 with the smart mare American Jennie, perhaps his best known horse. The Rathgarogue native ran a quality yard in Whitemoor, New Ross, and mixed training for the track with point-to-points and sales preparation. He sold horses to former British champion trainer Martin Pipe including the ten time winner Standin Obligation. American Jennie won a Grade 3 chase and finished third and fourth in the 2006 and 2007 Irish Grand Nationals at Fairyhouse behind Point Barrow and Butler's Cabin. She also won the valuable Pat Taaffe Handicap Chase at the Punchestown Festival on her final start and produced American Mike as a broodmare after her racing career. She was an important horse in the early career of Davy Russell, who won twice on her in 2005 and 2006, and the Youghal man rode many of his early winners for Cullen when first turning professional. Cullen also won that same Pat Taaffe Chase in 2013 with the Katie Walsh-partnered Carrig Millie and his final winners came with a double at Tramore in 2014. Russell and Walsh were among several well known riders who rode winners for Cullen with Charlie Swan, Conor O'Dywer, Sean Flanagan and the late Kieran Kelly all winning big races for the Wexford man. Gordon Elliott also rode bumper horses for him during his career as an amateur rider. A notice on the website said: 'It is with deepest sadness that we announce the death of Michael who passed away at his home on Monday morning, 12th May. 'He will always be held in the heart of his loving wife Ann who was by his side and also surrounded by other members of his caring family. 'Son of Elizabeth (Les) and the late Michael Cullen Senior. Sadly missed by his brother Sean, sister Marion, brothers and sisters-in-law Eve, Anna, Maria, Anthony and Garrett. "Adored by his nieces, nephews, extended family and a wide circle of friends. 'Family flowers only please donations if desired to The Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.' Get the latest sports headlines straight to your inbox by signing up for free email.
