Gresham man stabbed 86-year-old in Fred Meyer parking lot before trying to steal Porsche

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A Gresham man was sentenced to more than six years in prison on Friday after he stabbed an elderly man three times before trying to steal his Porsche in Dec. 2024. Jesus Ascenio-Molina, 31, pleaded guilty to second-degree robbery and second-degree assault. On Dec. 27, 2024, Ascenio-Molina came up to the 86-year-old man while he was loading groceries into his car at a Fred Meyer on 82nd Ave. '(Ascenio-Molina) told the man he admired the man's car, a 2011 Porsche Panamera, and twice asked for the keys. When the victim refused, (he) stabbed him twice in the back and once in the right ribcage,' the Clackamas County DA's Office said. Ascenio-Molina fled to a nearby apartment complex, but he was arrested two hours later. 'I'm happy seeing this guy off the street,' the victim said prior to the sentencing. Ascenio-Molina apologized to the victim in court and said that he 'wasn't thinking straight.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Dubai: Gang accused of strangling businessman to death in villa robbery case

The Dubai Criminal Court started hearing the case of five men accused of killing a 55-year-old Indian businessman during a recent robbery at the victim's villa in Al Wuhaida area. According to case files, the defendants — all of Pakistani nationality — allegedly stormed the victim's residence, tied him up, and assaulted him with a blunt object before strangling him to death. The motive was theft, prosecutors told the court, adding that a safe containing cash, passports, and jewellery was stolen from the bedroom. The case came to light when the victim's son returned home around 9.30pm and found his father unresponsive. He told investigators that he tried to reach his father multiple times by phone earlier in the evening. Upon entering the room, he discovered the body and noticed the safe was missing. Police teams were dispatched immediately, including forensic experts and CID officers. Surveillance footage from the villa's security cameras showed three of the accused entering the premises at around 4pm on the day of the crime. Twenty minutes later, they were seen leaving with a medium-sized safe. The forensic report submitted to the court confirmed the victim suffered multiple injuries and was ultimately strangled after resisting the attackers. Investigations led to the arrest of three suspects within the country. Two others were apprehended at an airport in their home country in coordination with international authorities and later extradited to the UAE. One of the defendants claimed during interrogation that he acted only as the driver and was unaware of the full extent of the plan. He told prosecutors that after the robbery, the group travelled to a farm in another emirate, where they broke open the safe and divided its contents. All five defendants confessed during questioning and have been referred to trial on charges of premeditated murder and theft.

DA: Convicted robber sentenced to 100 years to life under Three Strikes

A man convicted of multiple crimes for robbery incidents at a Rite Aid in July 2024 was sentenced to 100 years to life in prison Thursday, the Kern County District Attorney's Office reported Friday. Kern County Superior Court Judge David Zulfa sentenced defendant Jonathan Goodrich to 100 years to life in prison after Goodrich on April 29 was found guilty of three counts of robbery, two counts of using tear gas as a weapon, one count of attempted robbery and one count of petty theft for incidents at the store on 34th Street in Bakersfield. Goodrich has two prior "strike" convictions, a 2008 assault with a deadly weapon and a 2018 robbery, both classified as 'serious felonies," the DA's office said in a news release. That made his recent conviction a "Three Strikes" case. Goodrich was sentenced to four consecutive 25 years to life terms, resulting in a total prison sentence of 100 years to life, the DA's office said. 'The Three Strikes Law is designed to hold habitual offenders accountable by imposing harsher penalties that prioritize public safety and enforce legal consequences," District Attorney Cynthia Zimmer said in the news release. "With this latest conviction, Goodrich's criminal behavior in our community has come to an end.'

WARMINGTON: Jewelry store bandits strike again – and again

Witnesses described it sounding like gunshots going off one after another. Boom, boom, boom, bang, bang, bang. And then the sound of glass shattering. 'There were no shots fired,' Peel Regional Police clarified in a statement posted on X. 'Callers heard the hammers hitting glass.' Not at one jewelry store in the Erin Mills Town Centre in Mississauga but two. It was 6:30 p.m. on a busy Thursday night in the popular mall when three young masked men stormed the second-floor and hit the Fine Gold jewelry store first, taking out hammers, smashing display cases and grabbing merchandise. And then, a short distance away, they repeated the violence at Peoples Jewellers. The crooks took off with an unknown amount of jewelry. Police responded quickly to the wild scene and tried to calm down shocked merchants and shoppers alike. 'Multiple masked suspects fled in a vehicle.' Police said, adding there were 'no injuries.' At least no external injuries. On the inside, these retail workers were shaken up. 'I don't understand why when young people commit an armed robbery like this are given special treatment by the court when they are caught,' one of the victimized managers said. 'Why are their names not printed and why don't they do jail time?' Fair questions. It's so ironic this incident occurred; at the very same time I filed my column on the Jan. 19 smash-and-grab robbery at the Charm jewelry store – located just steps away from the two shops targeted Thursday evening. Police had just announced the arrests of two 16-year-olds and a 17-year-old in that case – two of whom were also charged with breaches of the release conditions from previous alleged crimes committed. It is believed that those three accused were still in custody but the joke inside the mall was – as Premier Doug Ford alluded to when some youth tried to steal his Cadillac Escalade – they were probably already out. 'They know the game,' said another manager of one of the stores hit. 'They know if they are even caught, they are out the same day.' Meanwhile, I went back over to the mall Friday to check on things and found both stores were closed for the day as they cleaned up the mess left behind. The police investigation is still underway, so there will be more to say on this later. WARMINGTON: Accused teenage jewelry store bandits can trick court but not the cops WARMINGTON: As America heads for a 'Golden Age,' Canada's windows and dreams are broken Trio accused of two Mississauga jewelry store heists in two days 5 suspects wanted after lastest smash-and-grab jewelry store robbery in Oshawa For now, these bandits got away. But the teenage boys accused of the Jan. 19 heist also allegedly got away – until cops caught up with them. It will no doubt only be a matter of time before this trio of crooks is caught as well. Even if it wasn't the same people as before, with the timing of it being on the same day as police announced the other arrests, could it be that a message was being sent? Either way, a lot of people are asking, when are Ontario courts going to send a message to these thugs? When are they going to start naming young offenders who are violent and give them real jail time? Until the justice system changes its approach, it will remain open season on Ontario businesses, people, cars and homes. jwarmington@

Calumet City man sentenced to nearly 6 years for 2023 armed robbery of mail carrier in Harvey, Illinois

A United States District Court judge in Chicago sentenced a man to nearly six years in federal prison for assaulting and robbing a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier in Harvey, Illinois, in 2023. Malik Washington, 26, of Calument City, pleaded guilty earlier this year to a federal robbery charge. According to the United States Attorney's Office Northern District of Illinois, Washington approached the carrier on Oct. 23, 2023, and asked them for rubber bands. He then attempted to grab a box from the carrier's bag, but the carrier pulled away. The office said Washington pulled out a semi-automatic handgun from his sweatshirt and pointed it at the carrier's stomach and demanded their postal key, to which they complied. He then ran from the area. Authorities arrested Washington four days later and recovered the stolen key. Washington was sentenced on Tuesday to years and 10 months in federal prison.
