Gene Simmons remembers Ozzy Osbourne's legacy after iconic rocker's death: "A totally extraordinary individual"
KISS frontman Gene Simmons paid tribute to longtime friend and rock legend Ozzy Osbourne during an appearance on "CBS Mornings," on Wednesday describing the Black Sabbath icon as a "pure human being" and an "extraordinary individual." Speaking from Los Angeles, Simmons reflected on his decades-long friendship with Osbourne, dating back to 1975 when KISS opened for Black Sabbath on their "Sabotage" tour. "Ozzy was always just wonderful, heartfelt Ozzy, nonjudgmental, no airs about him," Simmons said. "Reluctantly, I admit, sometimes I'm full of myself. Ozzy? Never." Osbourne died at the age of 76. His family's statement didn't provide additional details about the circumstances surrounding Osbourne's death. The KISS bassist recalled their early days performing together at a small 3,000-seat venue in Boston in 1975, when both bands were starting out. "Before Sabbath went on stage, we're backstage with our makeup and everything," Simmons recalled, when Osbourne approached him with warmth, asking, "How are you? Nice to see you." Simmons said Osbourne played a foundational role in creating heavy metal music, crediting Black Sabbath with inspiring countless bands that followed. "Before Ozzy, there was no Ozzy. You can't point to who it is that inspired Ozzy to be who he is. A totally extraordinary individual," said Simmons. The KISS frontman also credited Osbourne's reality show "The Osbournes" with paving the way for other celebrity family television shows. "We couldn't have our reality show without "The Osbournes," Simmons said. Simmons became emotional during the interview while discussing his friend's impact on both music and personal relationships. "I've never heard Ozzy ever say anything bad about anybody," Simmons said. "When you meet somebody extraordinary, I don't mean famous, because there are a lot of famous people who are putzes, myself sometimes as well, this was a pure human being, nonjudgmental."

Need a fix of The Osbournes? Here's where to watch it in the UK
The music world is in mourning. Last night, it was announced that rock superstar Ozzy Osbourne had died at the age of 76. Known to millions of fans at the Prince of Darkness, Osbourne was the lead singer of Birmingham band Black Sabbath, and helped inspire hundreds of influential bands that came after – including Metallica, The Smashing Pumpkins and The Stone Roses. He had been battling ill health for some time and passed away at home, surrounded by his family. But as fans mourn, there is another way to look back on Osbourne's legacy: through the reality TV show he starred in. Titled The Osbournes, it came out in the 2000s and helped reshape the star's image from a wild, hard-partying rock star to the benevolent, often-confused patriarch of his household. In the show, Osbourne could be seen wearing fuzzy slippers, attempting to wrangle life with his wife, Sharon, and their rebellious teen kids, Kelly and Jack. Oh, and their army of pets, of course. To say that it was ground breaking was an understatement. The show was the first true piece of 'reality TV' to break into the mainstream, way before the Kardashians. There were no competitions or eliminations, but that didn't matter: viewers were hooked simply by the premise of seeing the Osbournes live out their chaotic daily lives. Osbourne himself ended up being rather ambivalent about the show. In a 2022 interview with Metal Hammer, he called it the 'worst decision' he ever made. 'All I can say to you is this. If someone offers you a shitload of dough to be on television, you'd have to be a mug to turn it down,' he told the publication. 'I thought it was gonna be a piece of cake. But you have a camera crew living in your house for three years and see how you feel at the end of it. You feel like a f**king laboratory rat.' Nevertheless, the show still stands the test of time, and even went onto be nominated for Emmys. Where can I watch The Osbournes? To be honest, most of the series is free to watch on YouTube. However, the quality isn't great, so the best way to watch the show is probably on Prime Video, where four seasons are available to stream. While it's free for Prime members, you can also watch it as part of Prime's 30-day free trial, or even buy the seasons outright (season one costs £15.99). Happy watching.

The rocker was able to bid an emotional farewell to his fans on stage this month as he reunited with his original Black Sabbath bandmates Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward for the first time since 2005. 'You've no idea how I feel - thank you from the bottom of my heart,' Osbourne told the crowd in his final speech. The music legend vowed, however, that it would be his final ever performance due to his health, having opened up about his battle with Parkinson's in 2020.

Why Ozzy Osbourne was 'floored' by daughter Kelly's surprise engagement at Black Sabbath send-off - after her Slipknot star boyfriend asked for his permission to propose
For , it would prove to be the 'perfect end to a perfect show.' Fans across the world are in mourning following the legendary rocker's death, aged 76, in Birmingham on July 21, just weeks after his farewell performance with Black Sabbath at the city's Villa Park stadium. And it was here, at the home of his beloved Aston Villa, that Osbourne saw daughter Kelly accept a surprise marriage proposal from boyfriend Sid Wilson. The Slipknot musician got down on bended knee as family and friends -among them Osbourne, his wife Sharon and son Jack - relaxed backstage after Sabbath had signed off in front of 40,000 fans. But while Osbourne was already aware that a proposal was forthcoming, he had no idea that Wilson - who raiss son Sidney with Kelly - would do it at Villa Park. Speaking to TMZ after Kelly confirmed the engagement on social media, Sharon admitted her husband had been 'floored' by the timing of his romantic gesture - describing it as the 'perfect end' to his farewell gig. She admitted that Wilson had already given her advance warning of the proposal, after personally asked the rocker for permission to marry his daughter months earlier. But the plan to propose at Villa Park was intentionally withheld from Osbourne, because Wilson wanted to surprise him following the show. A video of the moment opens with Sharon telling the crowded backstage area: 'You've got to be quiet!' Wilson is seen standing in front of Kelly's parents as he prepares to get down on bended knee, before his future father-in-law quips: 'F**k off, you're not marrying my daughter are you?' Offering Kelly a custom made Mouawad engagement ring, he says: 'Kelly you know I love you more than anything. Nothing would make me happier than to spend the rest of my life with you. 'So in front of your family and all of our friends, Kelly will you marry me?' The Black Sabbath frontman performed from a throne on stage at Villa Park in Birmingham less than three weeks ago. In a statement confirming Osbourne's death, his family said on Tuesday night: 'It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. Hours earlier, Kelly had shared a post reflecting on her 'magical' evening at Osbourne's final show, alongside a photo with her son Sidney and Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood 'He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time. Sharon, Jack, Kelly, Aimee and Louis.' The rocker was able to bid an emotional farewell to his fans on stage this month as he reunited with his original Black Sabbath bandmates Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward for the first time since 2005. 'You've no idea how I feel - thank you from the bottom of my heart,' Osbourne told the crowd in his final speech. The music legend vowed, however, that it would be his final ever performance due to his health, having opened up about his battle with Parkinson's in 2020. The star was a titan of music who somehow survived controversies that would end the careers of many others, and weathered health problems that would leave most of us on our backs. Whether it was biting the head off both a bat and a dove, snorting a line of ants or urinating on a US war memorial while wearing one of his wife Sharon's dresses, Osbourne was defined by his antics both on and off stage. The singer, who sold more than 100 million records, will forever be synonymous with the heavy metal band he formed in his home city of Birmingham in 1969. With hits that included Iron Man, War Pigs and Paranoid, Black Sabbath's pushing of occult themes proved both hugely popular and controversial, with a future pope even condemning Osbourne for his 'subliminal satanic influence'.
