Cardinals' Masyn Winn scores from second base on sac fly after Cubs star Pete Crow-Armstrong forgets number of outs

Masyn Winn saw an opening and took it against the Cubs. (AP Photo/Jeff Roberson) There were 641 sacrifice flies hit in MLB this season entering Tuesday, and all 641 of them were scored by a man on third base. So you could call Masyn Winn something of an innovator. The St. Louis Cardinals shortstop scored one of the wildest runs of 2025 on Tuesday against the Chicago Cubs, running from second to home on a sacrifice fly from Alec Burleson. He was aided by a flub from Cubs star Pete Crow-Armstrong, who appeared to forget the number of outs and waited precious seconds before throwing the ball back to the infield. Advertisement It was the kind of heads-up baserunning where aggression met opportunity: The play wasn't scored as an error on Crow-Armstrong, just a sacrifice fly with Wynn scoring from second. The run gave the Cardinals some extra breathing room with an 8-5 lead in the fourth inning. It wasn't the best defensive inning for the Cubs overall, as third baseman Matt Shaw lost a foul ball as he run into the stands and had hit his head. Cardinals designated hitter Nolan Gorman hit a game-tying home run on the next pitch. The last time a baserunner scored from second on a sacrifice fly was last August, with New York Yankees infielder Oswaldo Cabrera making a hustle play after Chicago White Sox right fielder Dominic Fletcher fell over on a tough catch. Advertisement In his third MLB season, Winn entered Tuesday slashing .252/.322/.374 for the second-place Cardinals. Crow-Armstrong is among the top MVP candidates in the NL, with a .273/.310/.567 line at the plate and Gold Glove-caliber defense in center. He just won't be adding Tuesday's flub to his highlight reel.
