5 Million Pools Are Recalled After at Least 9 Children Drown
About 5 million aboveground pools are being recalled, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said on Monday, citing a design flaw that has been connected to the drowning deaths of at least nine children since 2007. The pools, which are made by Bestway, Intex and Polygroup, have a compression strap on the outside that children can use as a foothold to climb into them without a ladder or a step, the agency said. The strap — meant to maintain the structural integrity of the pool — wraps around the pool's vertical support legs, creating a safety hazard, according to the commission, which advised owners to immediately contact the manufacturer of their pool model to get a repair kit. The pools were sold at retailers in the United States and Canada, including Walmart, Amazon, Costco and Target, some going back to 2002, officials said. Others were purchased as recently as 2025. The pools are four feet tall and higher. The three companies that made the pools did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Monday. Each included a product recall notice on its website. From 2007 to 2022, nine children between the ages of 22 months and 3 years drowned after gaining access to the pools by using the compression strap as a foothold, according to the commission. The drownings occurred in California, Texas, Florida, Michigan, Wisconsin and Missouri. The commission said that it was also aware of at least three other episodes, in 2011 and 2012, in which children climbed into the pools using the compression straps. It was not clear why a recall notice for the pools had not been issued sooner. On Monday, a spokeswoman for the commission declined to comment further about the recall. Owners can find their pool's model number and brand name on the outside liner, the commission said. They are eligible for a free repair kit, which uses a rope at ground leve l that attaches to each of the pool's vertical support poles. Once the rope is secure, pool owners can cut away the compression strap without compromising the pool's structural integrity, the commission said.

Katy Perry left dangling midair in terrifying concert stage malfunction
Katy Perry's over-the-top performance took a scary turn on Friday night. During her concert in San Francisco, video taken by a fan showed the pop superstar flying over the audience on a massive butterfly prop when it malfunctioned mid-performance. The prop dropped suddenly, jerking Perry and causing her to cling onto it as it continued moving above the crowd. She stopped singing, looking visibly panicked. The "Teenage Dream" singer was heard letting out a yelp when the machine dropped. She immediately looked up at the wires the prop was strapped to. Despite the malfunction, the seasoned performer kept her composure and soon continued to sing to her fans. The comments section was flooded with mixed reactions towards Perry and her jaw-dropping performance. "Having things like this fly over the crowd is a huge safety hazard for the artist AND the fans," one comment read. Another person wrote, "She handled it like a pro, barely skipped a beat, but it should've never happened." "She's an astronaut she can deal with a little turbulence," a user commented. Perry's prop malfunction isn't the first bizarre moment that happened at her concerts. In June, her show in Sydney, Australia took an abrupt turn after a fan approached her on stage. Perry was caught off guard and yelped before she swerved to dodge his arm. The man was then seen jumping with the crowd. She continued with her performance as the fan began to dance on stage. Two security guards chased the man offstage, as another staff member walked behind them. The man was ultimately removed by additional security personnel. The disruptive fan was later arrested and charged with two offenses after he ambushed the pop star at the concert, police confirmed with Fox News Digital at the time. "The man was arrested by police and taken to Auburn Police Station where he was charged with two offenses - [entering] enclosed lands - not prescribed premises and [obstructing] person in performance of work or duties," the statement from Burwood Police Area Command read. The disruptive fan was granted conditional bail and was additionally issued a six-month banning notice for the Sydney Olympic Park precinct.

Walmart recalls 850,000 water bottles after two customers suffer ‘permanent blindness' from exploding caps
Walmart has recalled 850,000 water bottles after two customers reported blindness after being hit in the face by exploding caps. The Ozark Trail water bottles also caused other injuries, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission said the screw-cap lid on the stainless steel water bottles, which hold 64 ounces, may 'forcefully eject' when opening them after they have been used to hold food or beverages for a period of time. The CPSC has received three reports of customers being hit in the face by the lids, with two people permanently going blind after being struck in the eye. Walmart has sold the bottles nationwide since 2017. They are silver with a black lid with the Ozark Trail logo on the side. CPSC noted that the model number 83-662 appears on the packaging. Customers are urged to stop using the bottles immediately, and they can return them to the nearest Walmart to receive a full refund. The bottles, made in China, cost around $15. The commission describes the hazard saying, 'The lid can forcefully eject, posing serious impact and laceration hazards, when a consumer attempts to open the capped bottles after food, carbonated beverages or perishable beverages, such as juice or milk, are stored inside over time.'
