Abbotsley marks 25 years of village scarecrow festival
Villagers say a 25-year-old scarecrow festival "brings their community together" , with some people even starting their creations at Christmas. Lynn Norris, from Abbotsley in Cambridgeshire, said a resident introduced the idea of scarecrows to the Feast Week festivities in believed the village was the first in the area to include scarecrows and said people were often amazed by their number and size. The scarecrow festival, which typically takes place in the middle of July during Feast Week, is held in honour of St Margaret of Antioch, Patron Saint of its 13th-century church. James Dixon, 45, who moved from London 12 years ago with his wife Sonya, 50, said it was lovely being part of a community tradition."We have come to the village and been really looked after since moving here so I think it's really important to get involved in a tradition like this," he said. Andy Harris, 74, said he started off by making a Spitfire and added two more scarecrows in a nod to the famous photograph of a kissing couple taken in New York's Times Square in 1945. He previously won first prize with his scarecrow recreation of the barricades in Les Misérables and has also been a judge for the competition. "I just enjoy doing it," Mr Harris said. "I feel I'm quite artistic and like doing these sorts of things, I'm now retired so I've got time to spend a bit more time doing it and I enjoy the reactions from people who see it." Torteval Scarecrow Festival returns with 48 entries
Nearly 50 scarecrows are taking over a Guernsey parish this weekend for an annual Torteval Scarecrow Festival 2025 raised about £16,000 for local charities last year, organisers from the church, attendees will walk a scarecrow trail through the said there would be 48 scarecrows in the competition this year. Organisers said food and drink would be available as well as a variety of other GSPCA, Parkinson's Guernsey and the RNLI Guernsey Branch have all entered a scarecrow in the festival in previous years.

The Crick Scarecrow Festival in Northamptonshire, now in its 16th year, raises money for local community and charity groups. More than 50 registered scarecrows featured in the weekend event, which typically attracts around 5,000 visitors. Jessica Sheppard, from the Crick Scarecrow Festival committee, said: "We always get a really good turnout… it was really, really busy. "My favourite [display this year] was the Beatlemania one in Marsh Close. The cul-de-sac had all come together to create different scarecrows that represented different Beatles songs." Owl, hawk kites help Northern Ont. town tackle geese poop problem
Blind River is using owl and hawk kites to scare geese away from its waterfront. Mayor Sally Hagman says the chemical-free method seems to be working, keeping parks and beaches cleaner. If successful, the kites may be used in other areas.
