UT Dallas cuts track, cross-country programs weeks before school starts, leaving athletes scrambling
UT Dallas has abruptly cut its men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field programs, along with its cross-country teams, just weeks before the fall semester begins, a move that's left dozens of committed student athletes in shock. Incoming freshman Travis Matchett had just accepted a full-ride scholarship to join the track team, fulfilling his dream of competing in college after years of running at Midlothian High School. "UTD was the first school to seriously recruit me," Matchett said. "My recruiting process was really short because UTD was the place I wanted to be." That all changed Monday morning. "I'm still in a state of disbelief," he said. "We got a very brief email at 10 a.m. saying they were shutting down the program." The email, sent by the school's director of athletics, cited "ongoing budget constraints and a lack of on-campus facilities" as reasons for the decision. It also noted that affected athletes could keep their first-year scholarships and still come to UTD academically, but for Matchett and many others, that offer falls short. "Being an athlete, it doesn't work like that," he said. "If you don't compete, you won't have any times for the 2025-2026 season, and it'll be nearly impossible to get into another program." Matchett said he believes more than 60 athletes and several coaches were blindsided by the news, with no warning that the programs were on the chopping block. An online petition is now calling for answers and accountability from the university. "It's really affected a bunch of lives," Matchett said. "It's all very confusing and very shocking." He's now scrambling to find a new school, making calls, scheduling visits, and even exploring opportunities out of state. "Yesterday I didn't have more than five minutes off the phone, between coaches and schools texting me," he said. "I've had the biggest accomplishment of my life stripped from me, but I'm still trying to stay hopeful." CBS News Texas reached out to UT Dallas with questions about when the decision was made, whether other programs were considered for cuts, and if fundraising was ever discussed as an option. The University only provided the following statement: "UT Dallas has decided to discontinue men's and women's indoor and outdoor track & field and men's and women's cross country, effective for the 2025-2026 academic year, because of ongoing budget constraints and a lack of on-campus facilities. We recognize the disappointment this decision brings to our student-athletes and the impact on their experience at UT student athletes will retain their athletic scholarships for 2025-2026 should they choose to remain at UT Dallas to continue their academic work. For those who wish to continue athletics participation elsewhere, our staff will provide support and services to assist in the transfer portal process."

Arsenal sign MK Dons youngster
Arsenal have completed the signing of MK Dons youth goalkeeper Remi Lupinski, with the 16-year-old joining on a two-year scholarship contract. 'I'm lost for words, it's amazing to sign for Arsenal,' Lupinski said. 'It's going to be unbelievable, and I'm looking forward to playing for this great club, and I just can't wait to get started.' Though he didn't make it into an official matchday squad, he did join the first team on matchdays for warmups. The Gunners also made a serious move to sign youth striker Will Wright from Salford City, but the striker ultimately opted to remain in the north west and join Liverpool. Arsenal could turn back to Blackburn Rovers youth forward Igor Tyjon as a result, having already seen one bid turned down by Rovers.

Petronas awards 110 Sarawakian students with scholarships
The 110 students were selected from nearly 9,000 applicants for Petronas's flagship Powering Knowledge scholarship programme. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Petronas has awarded education scholarships worth RM28 million to 110 high-performing Sarawakian students to pursue tertiary studies at top local and international universities. Bernama reported that the students would pursue courses in chemical engineering, petroleum engineering, economics, law, and other industry-related fields at Universiti Teknologi Petronas and leading institutions in the UK and Australia. The recipients, who were selected from nearly 9,000 applicants, excelled in their 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination. Apart from their strong academic performance, they were also chosen based on their leadership potential and active participation in co-curricular activities. The scholarships were awarded under Petronas's flagship Powering Knowledge programme. State women, early childhood and community wellbeing development minister Fatimah Abdullah thanked Petronas for its continued investment in Sarawak's youth and said such efforts support the state's goal of becoming a high-income, developed region by 2030. 'The relationship between Petronas and Sarawak is long-standing and deeply rooted, and the efforts by the former consistently demonstrated a deep understanding of the true value of human capital,' she said in a speech at an event in Kuching. Since its inception in 1975, Petronas's education sponsorships have benefitted over 40,000 Malaysian students, including more than 1,300 Sarawakian students.

Tennessee basketball offers five-star power forward from California
Tennessee is recruiting for its 2026 basketball signing class. The Vols offered a scholarship to five-star power forward Christian Collins. "Blessed and thankful to receive an offer from the University of Tennessee," Collins announced. The 6-foot-8, 200-pound prospect plays for St. John Bosco High School in Bellflower, California. 247Sports ranks Collins as the No. 1 power forward in the class and the No. 2 player in California. San Diego was the first school to offer him a scholarship on May 2, 2024 Additional schools to offer Collins a scholarship include California, USC, Cal State Northridge, UT Arlington, UTSA, Kansas, Oregon, SMU, Alabama, Georgia Tech, UCLA, Louisville, Arizona, Kentucky, Houston, Arkansas and Baylor. Tennessee does not have a commitment in its 2026 basketball recruiting class. The Vols have six commitments in their 2025 basketball recruiting class: forward DeWayne Brown, small forward Amari Evans, point guard Troy Henderson, forward Nate Ament, shooting guard Clarence Massamba and shooting guard Ethan Burg.
