The new Prime Video trailer you have to see to believe? Ice Cube fighting aliens on Zoom, of course
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. New Prime Video movie War of the Worlds is coming to the streaming service on July 30, and out of everything new on Prime Video in July 2025, this just might be the most bizarre. I'm talking about the same 'War of the Worlds' as H.G. Wells' epic sci-fi novel, and later the 1978 Jeff Wayne musical with the giant spider robot now synonymous with the IP. There was even a 2005 movie with Tom Cruise, which looked much more like the traditional action movie we'd expect. Here's what we know about the 2025 version: The movie will follow Will Radford (Ice Cube), a top cyber-security analyst for Homeland Security, who 'spends his days tracking potential threats to national security through a mass surveillance program, until an attack by an unknown entity leads him to question whether the government is hiding something from him … and the rest of the world.'With the tagline 'your data is deadly,' this lesson in an unmanageable digital footprint is about to hit us in the face with all the tact of a mandatory school assembly. The more I watch the War of the Worlds trailer – and trust me, I can't stop – the more I'm dumbfounded that this is what our collective creativity has come to. Is the new Prime Video movie going to set the world on fire? Probably not, and that's bad news for Gen Z. New Prime Video movie War of the Worlds is really just Ice Cube fighting aliens on Zoom Culturally, we love to find someone to blame. For example, if things significantly change in a well-known franchise, fans are likely to blame certain audiences or social demographics as the reason why. As far as Prime Video's War of the Worlds is concerned, it looks like a cheap ploy to make the once complex lore of a science-fiction classic more palatable to younger viewers. Whether that's even what they want to see almost doesn't matter… young'uns will be responsible for a bad film if there's even a sniff of modern technology used. As you can see from the trailer above, War of the Worlds is going to be entirely set on a computer screen. At no point does the action deviate from Zoom calls, YouTube clips, or any amount of open and closed tabs on a desktop. This is far from a new concept, with horror movies like Megan is Missing and Missing (weirdly, a theme here) regularly pivoting to digital means of storytelling. But to not have any grounding in reality at all is more rarely seen, and honestly? I don't think it serves a purpose at all. Aside from the laziness I've already discussed, I also don't think the concept does the original story any justice. When you think of War of the Worlds, you think of dynamic action on an incredulous scale, complete with grandiose set pieces and earth-shattering worldbuilding. Wells' story is something that's bigger than you can ever comprehend, even if the far-off premise genuinely feels like it could happen one day. Reduce all of that to explosions on a screen, and what magic do you have left? Ice Cube could completely take me by surprise and pull the best new Prime Video movie of 2025 out of his back pocket, but I highly doubt it. If we're being honest, there's no real reason why this War of the Worlds should exist, only strengthening the argument that more movies should be based on original ideas. Ryan Gosling's Latest Appearance Is a 180 From His Wild Sci‑Fi Transformation
Ryan Gosling's Latest Appearance Is a 180 From His Wild Sci‑Fi Transformation originally appeared on Parade. Ryan Gosling is ditching his wild beard and long locks from the sci-fi transformation he debuted earlier this summer. Over the weekend, the 44-year-old actor stopped by San Diego Comic-Con where he appeared on a panel to discuss his upcoming film, Project Hail Mary. While Gosling was on hand to discuss his on screen journey to space, he looked nothing like his character. In the trailer, which premiered in June, Gosling was almost unrecognizable with a bushy beard and unwashed, stringy hair — and at Comic-Con, Gosling was back to his usual, well-kept self. He was joined by the film's directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller as well as screenwriter Drew Goddard and author Andy Weir, who penned The Martian, the novel that inspired the film. 🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬 The movie is set to follow middle school teacher Ryland Grace who is tasked with traveling to space, 11.9 light-years away, in order to figure out why the sun is dying and save Earth from extinction. In the midst of his endeavor, Grace wakes up on a spaceship, confused about why he is there and lacking any recollection of his past. Although the teacher attempts to bow out of the massive responsibility, he quickly learns that he doesn't have a choice in the matter. While discussing his physical transformation for the role at the event, Gosling jokingly referred to his character as "a space caveman, in this placenta onesie" — noting that he hopes to see the placenta onesie at Comic-Con in the future. Gosling added that he and the writers "tried to create these different layers to him as he's evolving from a space caveman to a space person that needs to do some really important stuff." "What's so inspiring about him is he reacts to a lot of things like I might or a lot of us might, and he's terrified appropriately of the task at hand," Gosling said, per PEOPLE. "He's somebody who on Earth had given up on himself, and has been given this opportunity to believe in himself again." Project Hail Mary is set to premiere March 20, 2026. 'Project Hail Mary' sends Ryan Gosling, and Comic-Con, into outer space
Comic-Con attendees got their first glimpse Saturday at the new sci-fi space thriller Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling, ahead of its arrival in US theatres in March 2026. Gosling was joined on a convention panel by directing duo Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, as well as screenwriter Drew Goddard and book author Andy Weir — whose previous novel The Martian was also turned into an Oscar-nominated film starring Matt Damon. Based on Weir's 2021 book of the same title, Project Hail Mary follows astronaut Ryland Grace (Gosling), a science teacher waking up to learn he was recruited for a space mission to save Earth from an existential solar threat. Gosling described his character as "a scared guy who has to do something impossible". "I knew it would be brilliant, because it's Andy [Weir]," Gosling told the crowd. "It took me places I've never been. It showed me things I had never seen. It was as heartbreaking as it was funny and I was... not just blown away, but also overwhelmed." Weir for his part said it was "so cool" to see his book come to life and complimented Gosling for giving "many layers to this character I made up." Lord and Miller, the Oscar-winning duo behind the Spider-Verse Spider-Man animated films, talked about the challenges of shooting a "crazy ambitious" film which takes place inside a spaceship for the most part. "We had to build an entire spaceship in two modes of gravity, and then we built this entire massive tunnel at scale," Miller said. "This is insane, to build a tunnel that was like 100 feet (30 meters) long, filled up an entire stage." The event also showcased various clips from the film, receiving a positive response from fans, who noted the bond formed between Gosling's character and an alien named Rocky. "The relationship between these two characters is the heart of the movie," Miller said. "I loved it," attendee April Rodriguez, who also read the book, gushed about the film. "I just never, like, envisioned it that way. So that was pretty cool."

Thousands of fans filled the hall to watch exclusive footage from the fourth season of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" before it premieres on Paramount+. One clip showed Captain Christopher Pike played by Anson Mount in an entire episode where the cast is depicted like puppets from Jim Henson's Creature Shop. Fans were also offered a first look of a new Star Trek series, dubbed "Star Trek: Starfleet Academy" starring Holly Hunter. Hunter plays Nahla Ake, the academy's chancellor and captain of the USS Athena, who in a clip shown at Comic-Con welcomes a new class of cadets. "It was really interesting to get the offer to be the captain, but then also to combine that with being the chancellor," Hunter said. "The captain is there to analyze in emergency situations, and then to delegate. And the chancellor is there to guide, to collaborate and to have tremendous empathy. "It was just a wonderful combination of things," she added. Comic-Con continues on Sunday for its final day of events. pr/jgc/aks

‘Alien: Earth' Crashes Into Comic-Con With a Massive Outdoor Experience
The USCSS Maginot, a Weyland Yutani research vessel, crashed into the large lawn next to Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend. Onlookers remarked they hoped there was nothing dangerous on board, as containers had spilled all over the surrounding area. That's both the tease for a very cool activation put together by FX for its new show, Alien: Earth, as well as the setup for Alien: Earth itself. The show, which debuts August 12, centers on a crashed ship and all the horrors that it contains. One of them is a xenomorph, everyone's favorite killer alien with acid for blood. But the xeno isn't the only creature on the Maginot. At least on the show. At Comic-Con, it was the main one, but there were teases of others. io9 was lucky enough to walk through the Alien Earth activation during the daytime of the con, with the understanding this was just half the experience. You could also come back in the evening, and what was once light, bright, and open becomes dark, dim, and scary. It's a whole other, more terrifying experience. But even in the daylight, the amount of work and detail that's been put into this activation is impressive. You enter through an almost military installation surrounding the crashed ship. Containers with those classic Alien eggs are scattered about, as well as some new, odd, yellow eggs. You enter the MUTHUR computer room, just like out of the original film, and traverse two long hallways, both of which have been torn to pieces by… something. Finally, you enter a massive research facility, which offers a hint of just how many different species had been collected by the ship, only to, in the end, finally be greeted by the Xeno itself. Luckily, we survived. Here's a video of the experience. View this post on InstagramAnd here are a few photos. If you're at Comic-Con, the Alien: Earth exhibition is on the Hilton Bayfront Lawn and is open Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the one experience and then 4:30 to 10 p.m. for the 'Code Red' evening experience. The daytime experience will also be open Sunday from 11 a.m. to a.m.-3 p.m. Alien: Earth is on FX August 12, and we'll have more soon. Want more io9 news?
