Michigan woman screams for "30 minutes straight" after winning $1M on scratch-off ticket

A Montcalm County woman says she "screamed for 30 minutes straight" after winning $1 million playing the Michigan Lottery's Electric 100s scratch-off ticket game. The 57-year-old player, who wishes to remain anonymous, bought the winning ticket at Zerkas General Store, located at 1249 North Greenville Road in Stanton. "I scratched the ticket while I was on the phone with my daughter and when I scratched off the lightbulb symbol with '$1MIL' next to it, I started screaming," said the woman in a statement. "My daughter thought something bad had happened because I kept yelling 'No way!' "When I told her I won $1 million, she didn't believe it, and honestly, I didn't believe it either. I scanned it on the Lottery app and when $1 million came up, I think I screamed for 30 minutes straight! I'm still in awe and I can't believe I'm actually here claiming $1 million." The woman elected to receive her winnings as a one-time lump sum payment of about $693,000. With her prize money, she plans to purchase a home, share her winnings with her family and invest. "Congratulations to this lucky player who is the first top-prize winner on the Electric 100s game, which is a part of the Electric family of instant games that launched earlier this month," said Michigan Lottery Commissioner Suzanna Shkreli in a release. "The Electric family of games is not only giving players a shot at millions in prizes instantly, but players can also enter non-winning tickets into a second-chance drawing for the opportunity to win $1 million later this year at a Detroit Tigers game!" Since the game launched in June, players have won more than $5 million playing Electric 100s, according to the Michigan Lottery. Each $10 ticket gives players the chance to win prizes ranging from $10 up to $1 million. More than $42 million in prizes remain up for grabs, the Michigan Lottery says, including a pair of $1 million top prizes.

Vet bought a lottery ticket to get change for a pizza tip. Then he won all the dough

Talk about raising serious dough. A retired veteran in California to extremely lucky when he bought a scratch off lottery ticket to break a $100 bill to tip his pizza order. McKinley Nelson, 72, of Winters, recently picked up a pizza for his wife at Round Table but needed change from his large bill to leave a cash tip. Nelson, who said he's played the California Lottery since its inception 40 years ago, went next door to Winters Wine & Liquor, bought the ticket, then picked up his order. 'I had a $100 bill. So, I got two tickets,' Nelson told lottery officials. 'I think it was $20, and I went to the truck and started scratching.' 'I think this one's a million, but I'm not sure,' Nelson said he told his wife about a Loteria Grande scratcher. The cheesy remark turned out to be correct, and Nelson is now $1 million richer. 'So, my wife almost had a heart attack,' Nelson told lottery officials about her reaction. 'And then we had to go in and buy the pizza. It was all because of her, she's the one that likes the pizza.' Nelson said he plans to use the winnings to pay off his home, save a little, and buy a camper van for a road trip with his wife so that they can visit both their families.

Michigan woman wins $500K scratch-off jackpot after store clerk's suggestion

An Upper Peninsula woman won a $500,000 lottery jackpot thanks to a suggestion from a store clerk. Amanda Hughes, 42, of Gwinn, bought her winning Wild Time 50X instant ticket at Kwik Trip, located at 301 M-553 in Marquette. "I don't play scratch-off tickets a lot, but I do buy one every once in a while," said Hughes in a news release. "When I was at the store, I asked for the $20 Wild Time game, but they had sold out of it, so the clerk suggested 50X Wild Time. "When I scratched the ticket off and saw the prize of $500,000, I wasn't sure if it was real at first. I thought I must not have read the instructions correctly, so I reread them and then went back into the store to scan the ticket and have the clerk look at it. It was surreal when I realized I really had just won $500,000!" With her winnings, Hughes plans to buy a house and then save the rest for her children. "I still can't believe this is real! This money is going to be life-changing for my family," said Hughes. Since the game launched in February 2024, players have won more than $67 million playing 50X Wild Time, according to the Michigan Lottery. Each $10 ticket gives players the chance to win prizes ranging from $10 up to $500,000. More than $24 million in prizes remain up for grabs, including 52 $10,000 prizes.
