If there is one thing you can guarantee in life, other than death and taxes, it's that Google will update the Chrome web browser with alarming frequency to fight off attacks using newly discovered security vulnerabilities. That guarantee will disappear for an estimated 300 million Android users starting August 5. Here's what you need to know. 300 Million Android Devices To Not Longer Get Chrome Security Updates According to the latest estimates, 4% of the Android user base of 3.3 billion still use Android 8 and another 5.8% use Android 9. While the percentages might seem insignificant in the overall scheme of things, that's a combined total of more than 300 million devices. It's also 300 million devices that will no longer benefit from security updates for the Google Chrome browser from August 5. Ellen T, a Chrome support manager at Google, has now officially confirmed in a Google Chrome community posting, that 'Chrome 138 is the last version of Chrome that will support Android 8.0 and Android 9.0.' With Chrome 139 being expected to arrive on August 5, and requiring devices to be running Android 10.0 or later, this means that you will 'need to ensure your device is running Android 10.0 or later to continue receiving future Chrome releases,' Ellen T said. How To Check And Update Your Version Of Android To Ensure Chrome Security Updates Continue Ellen T has stated that Google encourages all impacted users 'to move to a supported Android 10.0 version (or newer) to ensure you continue to receive the latest security updates and Chrome features.' Microsoft is now making Windows 10's extended security updates (ESU) program free. But there's a catch: you need to sync your PC settings data to the cloud via a Microsoft Account, using the new Windows Backup app, to benefit from this offer. Mainstream support for the beloved Windows 10 ends on October 14 this year. However, many people are still rocking Windows 10, disliking Windows 11, and on top of it all, Windows 11 is one demanding (and very hardware-intensive) OS to install. So, Microsoft is now making it easy to remain supported even if your PC or laptop is running Windows 10 via security updates until October 2026 for free. The Windows 10 ESU program was announced last year, and it costs $30 per device if you don't want to sign in with a Microsoft Account and sync your PC settings to the cloud. As an alternative, you can pay 1,000 Microsoft Reward points instead of cash. To enroll your PC or laptop in the Windows 10 ESU program, you need to use a dedicated app that will begin rolling out in July. Meanwhile, the Windows Backup app is already available for Windows 10 users. The app allows you to sync documents, pictures, apps, credentials, and even PC settings to the cloud using your Microsoft Account. The backup is done via OneDrive, which provides 5G of cloud storage for free for each user. This Windows Backup app needs to be set up if you want the free security updates that go beyond October 2025 (which is when the official Windows 10 end-of-support is). Those usually get addressed via security updates, but if your Windows 10 isn't getting any, well, it will slowly become a bigger risk. It's worth noting that the ESU program is designed only to deliver security updates to your Windows 10. So there won't be any new features and improvements to the OS anyway. Technical support for Windows 10 will end on October 14 even if you signed in with a Microsoft Account or decided to pay $30. So, no bug fixes either. Just security patches. Microsoft has been trying to urge people to move to Windows 11. A curious end-of-support article recently basically said in plain text that you should get a new laptop for Windows 11... Of course, the company would love you to either upgrade to Windows 11 on your existing laptop (if it supports it) or buy a new one. The ESU program basically exists so people who have no choice but to stay on Windows 10 for now can at least be somewhat protected from risks. Windows 10 support is due to end in October, potentially leaving hundreds of millions of PC owners without security updates. Microsoft had previously announced that it would offer consumers Extended Security Updates for one year for a fee of $30. Now, however, it's announced a way that consumers can get those updates without paying a cent. How To Get Free Windows 10 Updates The company says that Extended Security Updates will be offered to Windows 10 users through an 'enrollment wizard' – a screen that pops-up and guides you through the process. Consumers will be given three choices to enroll in the security updates: Using the first option will require users to sign up for a Microsoft account. Some Windows 10 users have refused to move to Windows 11, precisely because it practically insists that you sign up for a Microsoft account to log in to the operating system. Microsoft is arguably using the promise of free security updates as bait to get people to sign up, giving the company an opportunity to reach those people with marketing messages. Those who enroll will receive the Extended Security Updates until October 13, 2026. Microsoft has previously claimed that it will only offer consumers Extended Security Updates for a year, although business customers can pay for extended updates for up to three years. There's a stiff financial penalty for businesses that do cling to Windows 10, however. The first year of updates will cost businesses $61, and that fee doubles in year two and doubles again in year three. Will Windows 10 Stop Working Without Updates? Even if you decide not to take the free Extended Security Updates, Windows 10 won't suddenly stop working on October 14, when support comes to an end. Although users will likely be barraged with unavoidable pop-up messages warning them of the dangers of running an unsupported operating system, Windows 10 will still work. However, there is undoubtedly greater risk in running an operating system that is not receiving patches for known security flaws, which could be exploited by malware gangs. Those risks could be lessened by continuing to run up-to-date security software. It's highly likely that antivirus firms will continue to update their software beyond the October cut-off, as they did for several years after Windows 7's support came to an end, so users won't be left completely unprotected. It's also likely that many software firms will continue to update their products for Windows 10 beyond October, including browser makers. The long and short of it is that Windows 10 is going to be with us for a good while yet. Given that it's still the most used version of Windows, according to the latest Statcounter figures, Microsoft's hopes of shoving Windows 10 into retirement this fall are looking ever more unlikely.

At $1.99 per month for 100GB of cloud storage, a year of OneDrive still costs less than the $30 for a year of additional security updates, but it still may cause frustration among some users.
