The 93-year-old bowler in Singapore who keeps going despite vision loss
The 93-year-old bowler in Singapore who keeps going despite vision loss By CNA/Lan Yu At 93, Mr William Thong might just be one of the oldest bowlers in the world. He bowls up to five times a week and still competes in local tournaments. His love for bowling began in his 20s while working at an American company. "I wanted to please the president (of the company) that I could also bowl. I joined him and he was happy," he recalled. About 30 years ago, he was diagnosed with glaucoma. He eventually went completely blind in one eye, and was told there was a '50-50' chance of going blind in his other eye if he did not take appropriate care. But he didn't let that stop him from bowling. He relies on his one good eye, which he guesses to now have about 55% vision left, but it has not been without difficulty. There were a few times when he tripped on the lane. These days, he stands further away from the foul line so he does not slip. Mr Thong has other passions too. He uses the computer regularly and sings as part of his church choir every Sunday. But nothing comes close to bowling. 'When I stop bowling, I'll be very sad … If God allows me, I will bowl until 100,' he said. Next Story
