Perry sentenced to 26 years in prison for deadly DUI crash
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — A Hanna City man was sentenced Tuesday to a total of 26 years in prison for a deadly 2023 crash. During the sentencing hearing, Jeremy E. Perry, 45, read a short statement apologizing for the hurt and pain he caused when the wreck caused the death of a mother of five children. In May, he pleaded guilty in Peoria County Circuit Court to two counts of aggravated DUI in connection with the Jan. 15, 2023, crash that killed Miriam Schmid, 43, of Edwards and left her son severely injured. Specifically, he was sentenced to 14 years on one count and 12 years on the other count. They are to be served one after another. In return for his plea, lesser charges of aggravated DUI, driving on a revoked license and aggravated fleeing and eluding were dismissed by Peoria County prosecutors. Man indicted for deadly 3-vehicle crash Circuit Judge Paul Bauer could have imposed a term of probation, but Perry had to show 'extraordinary circumstances' why he should not have gone to prison. That's different from most crimes, as the burden is on Perry to show why he should get probation. Perry will have to serve at least 85% minus whatever time he has spent in custody. The crash was the cumulation of a lengthy flight from deputies with the Peoria County Sheriff's Office who responded to a gas station at the Kickapoo exit off Interstate 74 several minutes prior. The call was for two people who were unresponsive in a Buick LeSabre. Deputies were able to remove a woman from the car but the other person, Perry, drove off. They chased him on Kickapoo-Edwards Road and then onto U.S. Route 150 where he collided head-on with Schmid's vehicle. In all, three vehicles were involved. Schmid was pronounced dead at the scene while her son suffered severe injuries including a traumatic brain injury and a lacerated spleen. A third vehicle was also involved but it wasn't known how they were injured. Chemical testing indicated he had cannabis and methamphetamine in his system at the time of the mid-morning collision near the intersection of Route 150 and Koerner Road. Politicians respond after paedophile GP caught with child abuse images avoids jail
Northern Ireland's Health Minister has said he was content that due process was followed in the handling of a GP convicted of having indecent images of children. Alan Trevor Campbell (40), of Silverbrook Park in Newbuildings, Co Derry, pleaded guilty to 11 offences around possessing indecent images of children on dates between October 2014 and January 2022. Advertisement He was sentenced on Tuesday to 75 hours of community service and given a two-year probation order. The North's Public Prosecution Service said prosecutors are 'carefully considering the sentence to determine whether there is a legal basis to refer them to the Court of Appeal'. On Thursday, Stormont Health Minister Mike Nesbitt said he was 'disappointed by what happened', adding: 'I would have liked something a bit stronger'. 'In terms of the regulations, I am content that we have followed due process and that nothing has been done that affects patients or indeed the other members of that practice,' he said. Advertisement In terms of the sentence, he added: 'I think we also need to think about the message that sends out to society in terms of those who might be thinking about viewing and collecting that sort of image.' Justice Minister Naomi Long said the type of images referenced in the case are taken very seriously. 'When it comes to sentencing, it is a matter for the independent judiciary to set those sentences,' she said. 'I understand the PPS has already indicated that they are now looking at that sentence with a view to finding out whether there are legal grounds on which to appeal it for undue leniency, and as a live case before the PPS and potentially the courts, it wouldn't be appropriate for me as justice minister to express an opinion on what I think of the sentence. Advertisement 'I will say this however, we take images of this nature very seriously. 'The fact that these are non contact offences does not mean that children have not been harmed in their making and their distribution, and it's important to recognise that every image that is used in this context is an image of child abuse, some of these were category A abuse images, and those are the most serious kind. 'We are absolutely united in wanting to safeguard children here, which is our primary responsibility, but also not to turn a blind eye to the abuse of children in other places in order to produce this material for use in Northern Ireland.' Ireland Paedophile sports coach (91) becomes one of the ol... Read More A PPS spokesperson said: 'While sentencing is a matter for the independent judiciary, the Director of Public Prosecutions does have the power to refer certain sentences to the Court of Appeal on the grounds that they may be unduly lenient. Advertisement 'An unduly lenient sentence is one that falls outside the range of sentences that a judge, taking into consideration all relevant factors and having regard to sentencing guidelines, could reasonably consider appropriate. 'The prosecution team, including Counsel, are carefully considering the sentences imposed in this case to determine whether there is a legal basis to refer them to the Court of Appeal.'

Man who raped teenage girl (17) sentenced to over eight years in prison
A man who raped a 17-year-old girl has been sentenced to eight-and-a-half years in prison. The Central Criminal Court heard that that Jibola Moses Akanni (27) of St Laurence Drive, Drogheda, Co Louth, was found guilty of two counts of rape and one count of sexual assault at an apartment on Middle Abbey Street, Dublin 1, on February 15th, 2018. Advertisement He has 28 previous convictions from both Ireland and the UK relating to road traffic matters, as well as convictions for theft, public order and handling stolen property. Passing sentence on Thursday, Mr Justice David Keane commended the injured party in this case in the manner in which she conducted herself through the trial and wished her well for the future. Judge Keane said the aggravating factors in this case were the extended nature of the ordeal while the injured party was barely conscious, the disparity in the age of both parties and that she was an intoxicated and vulnerable person at the time. The judge set a headline sentence of nine years for each of the rape charges and four years for the sexual assault charge. Advertisement The judge said that a limited amount of mitigation can be granted for Akanni's cooperation with the gardaí, and with regard to his previous conviction, 'the best that can be said is that they are not for this type of offending.' He stated that 'no credit can be given for a guilty plea, as none was forthcoming, and he does not accept the jury's verdict, nor has remorse been shown.' Judge Keane noted that the probation report placed Akanni at high risk of sexual or violent reoffending. He accepted letters handed to the court by Akanni's parents, who spoke of his good and finer qualities. Judge Keane sentenced Akanni to eight-and-a-half years on each of the two rape counts and three-and-a-half years for the charge of sexual assault all of which are to run concurrently and backdated to November when he went into custody. Advertisement With regards to rehabilitation, the judge said: 'There is no prospect of his engagement in sexual offending courses and there is no realistic hope of promoting rehabilitation, so I will not suspend any part of the sentence.' The judge said: 'In order to protect the public from the risk of him sexually reoffending, I will place him under the supervision of the Probation Services for two years post-release.' He instructed that Akanni carry out all directions that the Probation Services deemed necessary. At a previous hearing, Garda Orla Cashel told Rebecca Smith, BL, prosecuting, that the injured party travelled to Dublin to attend a concert. When she arrived at the venue with her friends, she was refused entry as she was underage. While she was waiting outside the venue, she met a male whom she had met before. He invited her and her two friends to an apartment where he was staying, which was next door to the venue. Here she met Akanni. The group listened to music and drank. Advertisement The court heard that the injured party attempted one more time to enter the venue but was again refused. She did not want to ruin the night for her friends and told them to go to the concert and that she would wait in the apartment. The injured party was upset that she could not get into the venue, and Akanni held a bottle of alcohol to her lips and told her to drink. The injured party said she was tired and was going to go to sleep. She complained that she was lightheaded, and again Akanni held the bottle to her lips, and he then turned off the lights in the bedroom where she was. Gda Cashel said that Akanni then asked her what she had done sexually and if she had had sex with her boyfriend, to which she said 'no' and stated that she was 'only 17'. Advertisement At this time, she was fully dressed and unable to keep her eyes open and was not able to speak. Akanni then put his penis in her mouth. He then removed her trousers and underwear and put his mouth on her genital area. A short time later she felt pressure and pain in her vagina. The court heard that the woman's next memory was of being taken to the emergency room in an ambulance by her friends. They had returned to the apartment and noticed that her trousers were on inside out. The girl also began to vomit and was unable to stand up. Her friends brought her to the bathroom and then noticed that her underwear was also on incorrectly and stained. She was examined in a sexual assault treatment unit. Ireland University Maternity Hospital Limerick apologises... Read More Akanni was identified using CCTV and documents relating to the rented accommodation where he had stayed. He was arrested and interviewed four times, but nothing of value was obtained. Gda Cashel agreed with Ciaran O'Loughlin, SC, defending, that his client has no previous convictions for this type of offending. Mr O'Loughlin said Akanni came to Ireland when he was two years old and is now aged 27. Counsel said there was no violence or threats made; only the act itself.

BREAKING NEWS Chilling development after two people were tortured, stuffed alive into a toolbox and dumped in a lagoon near Brisbane
Three men found guilty of the 'horrific' murder of two people who drowned in a toolbox have been given a 30-year life sentence. Cory Breton, 28, and Iuliana Triscaru, 31, were killed at Kingston in Logan, south of Brisbane, on January 24, 2016. The pair had been beaten, stabbed and choked before they were stuffed into a two-metre-long toolbox. Stou Daniels, Davy Malu Junior Taiao and Trent Michael Thrupp were found guilty of the pair's murder for a second time following a retrial. Justice Glenn Martin said they had engaged in 'appalling conduct' when he sentenced the trio in the Queensland Supreme Court on Thursday. 'It is difficult to imagine the immense terror they felt in the hours leading up to their deaths,' he said. Justice Martin accepted crown prosecutor Nathan Crane's submission that the three defendants should serve 30 years instead of the mandatory 20-year minimum. All three defendants have already spent more than nine years in custody, which was recognised as time served. Mr Breton's partner, Miranda Parkinson, said in her victim impact statement that she knew he was dead as soon as she got a call from detectives asking to visit their home. 'I lost any hope I had held onto after 17 painstaking days that Cory was missing,' she said. 'The man that I loved, that I thought I was going to spend the rest of my life with, no longer exists.' Mr Breton's sister Tamara Kazim-Breton told the defendants about the person they 'threw away so easily like they were nothing'. 'Your actions didn't just take Cory, you tore us apart', she said. 'None of us living decent lives should be forced to relive this horror.' Ms Triscaru's mother and family members said in a joint victim impact statement that she was cherished as the heart of the family. 'Her senseless killing has left wounds that continue to bleed,' the family members said. A jury returned its verdict on June 20 after deliberating for more than two days. The trio faced a retrial in Brisbane after the Court of Appeal set aside murder convictions in July 2024. Mr Breton and Ms Triscaru had been lured to a Kingston unit before being attacked by a group of men over a drug-dealing dispute. The men drank whiskey and played video games for hours after torturing the pair and forcing them into the toolbox. The terrified pair made so much noise as the container was being moved, music from an awaiting ute was turned up in a bid to conceal it. Thrupp either threw the toolbox, weighed down by concrete, into nearby Scrubby Creek or was present when it happened, Mr Crane told the jury. Daniels and Taiao were also liable for murder by forcing the victims into the toolbox hours before their deaths, he said. Police divers found the bodies locked in the toolbox submerged in the lagoon two weeks later.

Ex-MMA fighter avoids jail time after crashing vehicle into Langley RCMP detachment
Abbotsford ex-MMA fighter Kultar Singh Gill is due to be sentenced in a 2023 crash that involved a vehicle being crashed into an RCMP building in Langley. Loading the player instance is taking more time than usual Loading the player instance is taking more time than usual A former mixed martial arts fighter from Abbotsford has received a conditional sentence after crashing a vehicle into an RCMP community policing centre in Langley nearly two years ago. Kultar Singh Gill, known in the MMA world as 'Black Mamba,' pleaded guilty to dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm. He was handed a conditional sentence of two years less a day, to be served in the community. The crash happened on the evening of Sunday, Oct. 29, 2023. Video posted to social media shows a vehicle speeding along Fraser Highway in Langley's Aldergrove neighbourhood, crossing a concrete median. A woman's legs appear to be hanging from the vehicle before it crashes into the Aldergrove community policing centre. According to an agreed statement of facts, Gill had consumed alcohol and cocaine in the hours leading up to the incident. He forced his way into the driver's seat, causing the woman's legs to dangle from the vehicle. The court heard he drove for four kilometres before crashing. The woman sustained extensive injuries to her legs. Gill fled the scene on foot and was arrested nearby. He spent 123 days in pre-trial custody before being released on bail. He was originally facing additional charges, including aggravated assault and two counts of failing to stop. Those charges were stayed. Court records show the case was classified as a 'K' file by the B.C. Prosecution Service — a designation used when the accused and victim have had a close, personal or intimate relationship. Gill previously ran a martial arts academy in Abbotsford. Under the terms of his sentence, he will remain under house arrest for six months, with exceptions for work and medical appointments. After that, he will be subject to a nightly curfew from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. He was also given a one-year driving ban.
