Angry residents with 'Save Our Kids' banners mass outside Essex asylum hotel after Ethiopian migrant appears in court accused of sexually assaulting 14-year-old schoolgirl

Hundreds of furious Essex residents gathered outside an asylum hotel in Epping tonight to voice their anger following the arrest of a migrant on sex assault charges in school girls. Well-dressed mothers and retired businessmen and women joined dozens of bald tattooed middle aged men to call for the closure of the Bell Hotel as refugee accommodation. One bearded man wearing shorts draped a union flag over his shoulders as he took selfie pictures outside the embattled hostel. Essex Police were out in force in the picturesque commuter town - blocking the entrance to the hotel car park with a riot van. A temporary wire fence has been erected in recent days following an earlier violent and bad tempered demonstration earlier in the week. One of the demonstrators told how the 'whole of Epping' was united in opposition to housing asylum seekers in their town. The 74-year-old retired company director who declined to give his name said: 'We are all absolutely sick of it. They should all be sent back to where they've come from. If they came in a small boat from France then they should be sent back to France. 'It's absolutely outrageous that we have to pay for them - their good, their accommodation, their phones, everything. 'How is it that our children can't walk home from school without being attacked?' A mother of three added: 'This is not about being racist, it's about protecting our children. There are a load of schools near here and there are all these single men here in the hotel and no one knows who they are. 'They've not been screened, or checked or anything.' One man held a flag of St George with the slogan written in black; 'Save Our Kids'. Ethiopian asylum seeker Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu today appeared in court accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old schoolgirl and inciting her to engage in sex.

Lawmaker seeks magistrate's resignation after releasing Berlin man who murdered estranged wife

A Republican state legislator is calling upon a court magistrate to resign after granting $5,000 bail for Michael Gleason Jr. on felony kidnapping and sex assault charges two months before he murdered his estranged wife and shot himself to death Sunday. Berlin rep seeks resignation from court magistrate over bail for man who murdered his wife State Rep. Lori Korzen, R-Berlin and center, called for the resignation of Court Magistrate Stephanie Johnson over the bail granted to Michael Gleason Jr. two months before he murdered his estranged wife, Marisol Fuentes, and shot himself to death. Pictured here with Koren are former Rep. Brian Valerino, left, who is now warden of the state medium security prison in Berlin and Peter Morency, the former Berlin police chief who serves with Korzen in the New Hampshire House. First term state Rep. Lori Korzen, R-Berlin, released the letter she sent to Court Magistrate Stephanie Johnson as the fallout continues over the tragic death of restaurant worker Marisol Fuentes. 'The decision to set Mr. Gleason's bail at just $5,000 despite clear warning signs and the severity of the charges he faced, has had devastating consequences for Marisol, her family and our entire community,' Rep. Korzen wrote. 'The bail system exists to balance the rights of the accused with the imperative of public safety. In this instance, I believe that balance was not achieved, and the result was a preventable tragedy.' Fuentes took out the criminal complaint against Gleason, also accusing him of trying to steal thousands of dollars she had saved to start her own business. Both were found on Sunday morning following a murder-suicide inside the La Casita Mexican Restaurant where Fuentes worked. Upon granting bail, Johnson had ordered Gleason to have no contact with Fuentes and to possess no firearms. She issued the ruling under an existing, more permissive bail law that gets much tougher when a bail reform bill (HB 592) Gov. Kelly Ayotte signed kicks in on Sept. 21. Local rep seeks court magistrate's resignation over bail decision State Rep. Lori Korzen, R-Berlin, is calling upon Court Magistrate Stephanie Johnson, center, to resign for releasing on $5,000 bail Michael Gleason Jr. two months before he shot his estranged wife to death and killed himself. In this picture from left to right, Jaye Duncan, Johnson and Frank Weeks took the oath of office last December for five-year terms as full-time magistrates created under a 2023 bail reform law. Gov. Kelly Ayotte signed last spring an even tougher bail law that as of this September will get rid of the magistrate positions and their role in holding bail hearings. The new bail law will lower the threshold that judges use in deciding to hold an offender without bail pending trial. Jaye Duncan, Frank Weeks and Johnson were sworn in as full-time magistrates last December to five-year terms. The bail reform measure also eliminates magistrates and the budget to pay them, requiring in the future that only judges take part in holding court hearings required prior to any decision on bail following an arrest on one of a series of violent crimes. Some legislative budget writers believe court administrators may have to find other work for magistrates to do other than bail hearings given they have five-year assignments. 'I recognize the immense pressures and complexities that come with your role,' Korzen concluded. 'However, the gravity of this oversight cannot be ignored. Accountability is essential for restoring public confidence in our legal system and for ensuring that such a heartbreaking event is never repeated.' klandrigan@

Jury finds man (20s) accused of three-in-a-bed sex assault not guilty

A man accused of a three-in-a bed sex assault was found not guilty by a jury Thursday. The man, in his 20s, had denied one count of sexually assaulting a woman who invited him back to her apartment and allowed him to go to sleep alongside her and one of her female friends in her bed after they met in a pub on a night out. Advertisement The three parties were studying in Limerick at the time, the man's three-day trial at Limerick Circuit Criminal Court heard in front of a jury of eight women and four men. The man told gardaí he was 'shocked' when they put the allegation to him after his arrest following the alleged assault, five years ago. The woman alleged the man used one of her hands to masturbate him while she was asleep next to him and another woman in a shared student apartment. Earlier on the night, the two women went to a pub together and met the man and all three went back to the alleged victim's home in the early hours of February 15th, 2020. Advertisement The alleged injured party said she cooked them a meal and the three of them slept beside one another in her 'double bed'. The woman told the court that on the night she warned the man she would 'hit' him 'in the balls' if he tried anything of a sexual nature with her, after he had sought a kiss from her in the bed. The man, in Garda interviews, admitted asking the woman 'in a jovial way' for a kiss. He maintained he had not pursued it after she turned him down. The accused refuted the woman's claims that she had told him she would hit him in his testicles if he tried anything of a sexual nature with her. Advertisement 'This didn't happen. Not once do I remember her threatening this or saying this to me,' the man told gardaí. The man told gardaí he and the two women were 'cuddling' in the bed, and 'singing songs' and 'chatting' before falling asleep together in the bed. The man was positioned lying between the two women with his arms around them, and they were turned into him before they all fell asleep. The man denied having any sexual contact with the alleged victim, telling gardaí 'absolutely not' when asked if he had removed his underwear while he was in the bed with both women. Advertisement When gardaí put to the accused — the woman's claims that he used one of her hands to masturbate him in the bed — he replied: 'I totally deny it, it didn't happen at all.' The man said he felt 'horrendous' at the allegation: 'I absolutely deny that. I'm shocked to hear that.' The man said he accepted that while he may have told the other woman that he fancied the alleged victim, he maintained he did not sexually assault her. The man told gardaí he consensually kissed the alleged victim's friend in the bed after the alleged victim had briefly left the room during the night. Advertisement The alleged victim's female friend who was in the bed on the night told the trial that she and the accused did share a kiss in the bed, and that it was '100 per cent mutual'. The investigating garda Ryan Hill agreed with the accused's barrister, Amy Nix BL, that the accused 'had no previous convictions', that he was from 'a decent, upstanding, hard-working family,' that he was 'supported' in court by his family, and that he is in gainful employment. Garda Hill agreed with Ms Nix that despite having the right to remain silent during Garda interviews after his arrest, the man 'cooperated at all times with the Garda investigation and he answered all your questions'. The alleged victim told the trial that after she and her friend invited the accused back to her apartment, she cooked them a meal and they all went to sleep in her 'double bed'. The alleged victim said three-in-a-bed scene was not unusual at the time in the college environment, as students were 'going in and out of apartments all the time and it was normal for people to crash and sleep wherever they could get a bed'. The alleged victim told prosecuting barrister John O'Sullivan that she did not invite sexual contact nor give the man the impression she was interested in any type of sexual contact on the night. In fact, she said, she warned him against it. She agreed that she and her friend were positioned on either side of the accused in the bed on the night. She said she warned the accused she would defend herself physically if he tried anything of a sexual nature, after he had looked for a kiss from her. 'That was me setting the boundary and the tone that I was only there to sleep,' she told the court. She agreed that after alleging the man had become 'touchy feely' and had looked for a kiss from her, she left the room to take a phone call and returned to the bed and eventually fell asleep next to the man with his arm underneath her. She alleged she later woke up in the bed to find the man 'moving my right hand up and down on his penis' with his left hand. Ireland University Maternity Hospital Limerick apologises... Two weeks later the alleged victim made a statement of criminal complaint of alleged sexual assault. Another friend of the alleged victim told the trial that the alleged injured party told her that the accused 'put his hands in her trousers and was touching himself and giving himself a hand job.' After deliberating for one hour and 38 minutes Thursday, the jury reached a unanimous verdict, finding the man 'not guilty'.
