China is preparing to steal the jobs of the future
They call it 'artificial general intelligence' (AGI) and it may be only a matter of a few years away. AGI is the imagined point at which computers finally achieve consciousness, surpass human intelligence and begin to self-improve across virtually all cognitive tasks at an accelerating rate. Sometimes referred to as the 'singularity', it's long been the stuff of science fiction, but many techies believe, such is the pace of current development, that it is on the verge of becoming a reality. Whoever gets there first, it is widely believed, will inherit the Earth, embedding their influence, ideology and systems of governance into world affairs for generations to come. It's a frightening as well as awe-inspiring prospect and it is one whose potentially transformational geopolitical consequences are only now starting to be more widely appreciated. And it's why the US and China are increasingly engaged in what can only be described as a new arms race – or space race – to develop and harness artificial superintelligence for economic and geopolitical superiority. In both jurisdictions, hundreds of billions of dollars a year are being poured into getting there first. Yet though the Trump administration is only too aware of the threat, its response is oddly backward-looking and counterproductive. Despite the apparent world lead the US has in supercomputing, there is a high chance it will end up losing the war.

A Scientist Says Humans Will Reach the Singularity Within 20 Years

Here's what you'll learn when you read this story: Futurists have long debated the arrival of the singularity, when human and artificial intelligence will merge, a concept borrowed from the world of quantum physics. American computer scientist and futurist Ray Kurzweil has long argued that the singularity would likely occur around the middle of the 21st century, and with the rise of AI, his predictions are gaining more credence. In his book, The Singularity is Nearer, Kurzweil doubles down on those predictions and details how humanity's intelligence will increase a millionfold via nanobots (among other things). You don't exactly become a world-renowned futurist by making safe predictions. And while some of these past predictions haven't exactly come to pass (Back to the Future Part II, specifically), these ideas help expand our thoughts on what exactly the future might look like. And no one makes futuristic predictions quite like Ray Kurzweil. An American computer scientist-turned-futurist, Kurzweil has long believed that humanity is headed toward what's known as 'the singularity,' when man and machine merge. In 1999, Kurzweil theorized that artificial general intelligence would be achieved once humanity could achieve a technology capable of a trillion calculations per second, which he pegged to occur in 2029. Experts at the time scoffed at the idea, figuring it'd be at least a century or more, but with Kurzweil's timeline only a few years off—and talk of AGI spreading—that decades-old prediction is beginning to loom large. Not only is he "sticking with [his] five years' prediction, as he said in a TED Talk, Kurzweil also believes that humans will achieve a millionfold intelligence by 2045, aided by brain interfaces formed with nanobots non-invasively inserted into our capillaries. 'We're going to be a combination of our natural intelligence and our cybernetic intelligence,' Kurzweil said in an interview with The Guardian, 'and it's all going to be rolled into one. We are going to expand intelligence a millionfold by 2045, and it is going to deepen our awareness and consciousness.'$13.99 at While this idea subscribes to a merger more akin to physical intervention to bridge the gap between man and machine, other philosophers and AI experts agree that some form of merger is likely inevitable, and in some ways, is already beginning. In July 2024, Oxford's Marcus du Sautoy and Nick Bostrom both expounded on the hopeful and harrowing possibilities of our AI future, and for both of them, a kind of synthesis appeared inevitable. 'I think that we are headed toward a hybrid future,' Sautoy told Popular Mechanics. 'We still believe that we are the only beings with a high level of consciousness. This is part of the whole Copernican journey that we are not unique. We're not at the center.' Of course, this 'Brave New World' of a hybrid AI-human existence brings with it a plethora of issues both political and personal. What will humans do for jobs? Could we possibly live forever? Would that change the very idea of what it means to be human? Kurzweil, like many other futurists, is relatively optimistic on this front. In that same interview with The Guardian, Kurzweil highlights the idea of a Universal Basic Income as a necessity rather than a fringe idea currently supported in more progressive circles, and AI will bring unprecedented advancements in medicine, meaning the very idea of immortality isn't out of the realm of possibility. 'In the early 2030s we can expect to reach longevity escape velocity where every year of life we lose through aging we get back from scientific progress,' Kurzweil told The Guardian. 'And as we move past that, we'll actually get back more years. It isn't a solid guarantee of living forever—there are still accidents—but your probability of dying won't increase year to year.' Just like Back to the Future Part II predicted flying cars, so too could these technology-fueled utopias crumble to dust as these dates inch closer and closer. But 25 years ago, Kurzweil predicted we'd be rapidly approaching a major moment in humanity's technological history at the tail end of this decade. Currently, no evidence suggests the contrary. Embracing infinity: could surreal numbers shape the future of physics?
Imagine Earth were to shrink to the size of a marble. We might be in trouble, but the planet would continue its smooth course around the sun while the moon would maintain its orbit, circling Earth once a month. Isaac Newton proved Earth's gravitational pull would be the same even if all the mass were concentrated in a single point. But the density at that point would be infinite, a condition physicists and mathematicians call a singularity. Such singularities are found in black holes, stars that have collapsed under their own weight. According to general relativity, mass concentrations curve space-time, inducing the force of gravity. With enough matter in a small enough volume, gravity becomes infinitely strong. In 1916, just months after Albert Einstein's general relativity appeared, Karl Schwarzschild discovered a solution of the equations with a singularity. Decades later, this idea led to the theory of black holes, crushed stars with spherical boundaries that trap anything falling inside, including light rays. Most physicists believe the singularities are mathematical artefacts, and would vanish in a more fundamental theory incorporating quantum effects. Physical equations enable us to predict the future, but singularities imply a lack of predictability; theory just breaks down. It was hoped that quantum effects would eliminate infinities, but current versions of quantum gravity are plagued with singularities. It seems that infinite quantities are inherent and unavoidable. Infinity is at the core of mathematics. We can gain a first impression of it by placing all the counting numbers, 1, 2, 3 ... in a row stretching towards the right without end. Including the negative integers extends the row to the left. But there are gaps in the row, crying out to be filled. We can insert an infinity of fractions between any two whole numbers but, while the gaps become ever-smaller, their number grows without limit: they never go away. Towards the end of the 19th century, two mathematicians, Richard Dedekind and Georg Cantor, found ways to define quantities known as real numbers, filling all the gaps and producing a mathematical continuum. But this may or may not correspond to the points on a physical line; we have no way of knowing whether we have too few or too many numbers for these points. Cantor proved many startling results. There is not just one infinity, but an entire hierarchy of transfinite quantities, increasing without limit. Around 1970, John Conway discovered an entirely new way of defining numbers, which includes all the familiar numbers, all Cantor's transfinite numbers and a breathlessly vast universe of new numbers, both infinitely large and infinitesimally small. These are the surreal numbers. But this is typical; new mathematical developments often find applications only years or decades after their discovery. Given that fundamental physical theories involve singularities, and infinite quantities are natural elements of the surreal numbers, these exotic numbers may prove valuable in future theories of quantum gravity. According to Gauntlet Ventures co-founder Oliver Carmack, the decision to back Beyond Imagination stemmed from the company's capacity to address a looming global issue: the skilled labor shortage. The startup's bot, with its AI-driven adaptability, is being positioned as a solution for industries like pharmaceutical manufacturing, chip fabrication, and automotive assembly, sectors that demand high precision and long-term workforce support, Reuters says. Beyond Imagination is currently testing its humanoid robots and seeking enterprise partners for deployment in industrial settings, aiming to help revolutionize U.S. manufacturing through AI-driven automation, according to Reuters. Tesla's (NASDAQ:TSLA) Optimus robot, Meta's (NASDAQ:META) AI systems, and Nvidia's (NASDAQ:NVDA) development tools are all pushing the industry forward.
