Should You Use a Sunscreen With a Higher SPF? We Asked a Dermatologist
Before you leave your house, you probably check to make sure you have three items on hand: your keys, wallet and phone. But there is one product you may be forgetting that is essential for your health -- sunscreen. Especially during the summer months, sunscreen is crucial to protect your skin from the sun's UV rays, which can lead to skin cancer and premature aging. But with so many different SPF numbers out there, it can be difficult to know which one to choose. We asked a dermatologist, so you don't have to. What is SPF? SPF, or sun protection factor, describes the amount of solar energy needed to produce a sunburn on protected skin relative to unprotected skin, according to the US Food and Drug Administration. Logic would follow, then, that wearing a higher SPF would offer you better protection when you're out and about, basking in the sun's rays. Is a higher SPF better? Is higher SPF sunscreen more protective in a measurable way that actually matters? The tested difference between SPF 30 and SPF 50 is small, according to Dr. Steven Daveluy, board-certified dermatologist and program director at Wayne State University Department of Dermatology. There was a difference of 96.7% blocking vs. 98% blocking, in one example he provided. Research on people wearing sunscreen out in "real life" has suggested higher SPFs are more protective, Daveluy said in an email. Combine this with the fact you're probably not wearing enough sunscreen -- studies have shown people apply only 25% to 50% of the amount that they should, Daveluy said -- and a higher SPF may come out reasonably more protective. "You should use about 1 ounce of sunscreen to cover your head, neck, arms and legs when wearing shorts and a T-shirt," Daveluy recommended, adding that people without hair should use a little more. "That means your 3-ounce tube of sunscreen is only three applications," Daveluy said. "Most people are not using that amount." What is the minimum SPF you need in a sunscreen? The American Academy of Dermatology Association recommends your sunscreen be SPF 30 or higher. It also recommends you look for sunscreen that has broad-spectrum protection (it protects against UVA and UVB rays) and make sure it's water-resistant. "If you follow the recommendations for the proper amount of sunscreen, then SPF 30 is great," Daveluy said. If you think you're skimping on the layers, though, a higher SPF could offer more benefit. He added that he generally recommends looking for at least SPF 50 or 60. Does skin tone matter when choosing an SPF? People with darker skin tones have more melanin, which does offer some protection from the sun's damaging rays. For this reason, skin cancer rates in people of color are lower than rates in white people, but the risk isn't zero. Research also suggests that people of color may be more likely to experience a missed or late diagnosis of skin cancer, making outcomes more dangerous. (It's also important to note that melanoma can have other causes besides exposure to sunlight or UV rays, and can show up in areas not typically exposed to sun.) "SPF 30 is the minimum for everyone," Daveluy said. He added that tinted sunscreens may be a better fit for darker skin tones, leaving less of a white cast. "If you have very fair skin, the higher [SPF] numbers may be a good idea, especially if you aren't using the proper amount, because you will see the consequences of underuse more easily," Daveluy said. Sunscreen red flags As long as you're wearing a minimum of SPF 30, applying it properly and also looking for products that are broad spectrum and water resistant, you've got the basics down. Daveluy added that for people with sensitive skin, finding a mineral sunscreen with "active ingredients of zinc and/or titanium" may be a good choice. Daveluy pointed out other measures of protecting yourself from the sun, including wearing a wide-brimmed hat, sun-protective clothing and hanging out in the shade when possible. But don't forget that sunscreen has a proven safety record going back for decades, he said. "The biggest red flags for sunscreen are any people or reports that try to tell you sunscreen isn't safe," Daveluy said.

Kristin Cavallari Teases Uncommon Beauty Expansion and Talks Glowing Skin Goals
Kristin Cavallari is betting big on her beauty line. The 38-year-old reality star-turned-entrepreneur and podcast host revealed plans to focus on expanding Uncommon Beauty — the skin care subsidiary of her jewelry brand, Uncommon James — during a discussion at ShopToday's Stages summit on Thursday. 'I'm really focusing on my beauty line,' she hinted. Cavallari went on to chronicle the evolution of the Uncommon business, from its original start with jewelry in 2017 to the debut of her clean product line four years later, which now includes a few body care essentials. 'Honestly, how the [beauty] aspect came about was that my team noticed a few years ago that people's number-one question was actually what my skin care routine was,' she said. 'And so I never really thought about doing skin care, but I thought, 'Well, you know, may as well just explore this and see.'' Creating clean product alternatives was, at the time, not the norm, Cavallari recalled. 'I thought I was using clean skin care, but then we sent it off to the lab and came to find out, it wasn't clean at all. We think the products we use are doing a good thing for our skin, but they're affecting the opposite when there are all these chemicals and everything in them,' she said. 'So, that was actually kind of alarming to me, and that made me want to do skin care.' The market for clean beauty has certainly grown since Cavallari debuted her first round of face essentials. However, there were a few preexisting brands such as Youth to the People and Jessica Alba's Honest Beauty, both of which launched in 2015, followed by Summer Fridays in 2018. Sasha Plavsic founded Ilia Beauty back in 2011. While there may be an oversaturation of clean brands now, Cavallari said she has no reason to back down from the beast that is the beauty business, or any product industry for that reason. ' There are a million clean skin care out there now. But we've evolved from just being 'clean' and now it's more that we're taking a stance on being really hydrating and going after that glowy, radiant skin. Clean is a bonus,' she explained. At this point, reinvention is second nature for Cavallari, a now mom of three who was catapulted into the spotlight at just 17 years old as a pioneer reality star on the MTV series 'Laguna Beach.' The chance to be on-screen as a teenager was an opportunity Cavallari jumped at and still doesn't regret to this day, she said, likening the decision to starting Uncommon James with no business plan all by herself. 'Learning what not to do is valuable,' she noted. Cavallari has since opened up four Uncommon James stores and entered the fragrance market with a unisex scent called Hard Feelings. The formula fuses notes of rose, hibiscus, incense, tobacco, pepper, bergamot, cedarwood, sandalwood and orcanox. Gemma Atkinson turns to crowdfunding to raise £500k to launch her beauty brand, but angry trolls rage she can ‘do one'
GEMMA Atkinson has sparked controversy after turning to crowdfunding to raise £500,000 to launch her own beauty brand. The actress has already attracted an impressive social media following for her skincare company Gem & Tonic, which aims to provide products to "simplify your beauty regime". 5 5 "Every single product combines scientifically-proven ingredients with mineral rich gemstones," she said. As she prepares to "officially launch" the brand in September 2025, Gemma has decided to try and raise funds through Crowdcube - which asks people to "invest in Europe's best startups". On the Crowdcube page, which has already raised £48,296 from 354 different investors, Gemma says: "We're now looking to raise £500,000 to officially launch in September 2025 to continue the movement and the community we've already started. "If you're looking to invest in a brand with a real community in real demand, you've found yourself a real good gem." The page also highlights some of the company's successes to date, including the fact they made £127,000 in pre-order sales in just three weeks. The equity investment has a share price of 90p and a pre-money valuation of £2.25 million. "The Company had already raised £250,000 prior to the Crowdcube raise," the page reads. "For the avoidance of doubt, this has been included in the pre-money valuation displayed in the pitch." And for those investing in the business, there are various 'rewards' for doing so - all of which start from an investment of £50. Investing £50 will get you a signed thank you card from Gemma, while for £25,000 you'll get to "meet Gemma and have lunch with the G&T team", as well as an investor-only lifetime discount of 15%, a product bundle, an invite to the press launch, lifetime early access to new products and Gemma's signed thank you note. News of Gemma's crowdfunding efforts quickly made its way onto social media, with trolls using the comments section of the videos to have their say on the controversial move. "Why hasn't she used her own money?" one wrote. "I don't want to Invest of your not engaged to the hilt in every financial way." "Crowd funding to make herself rich," another added. "Ok send me money and I'll start a business!" "So she wants people to help her… doesn't she know about the cost of living crisis us normal people are dealing with?" a third commented. "Over 1/2 mil in her bank - usual rich get richer!" someone else sighed. "Crowd funding? Gemma can do one," another raged. "Bloody hell she has more than most for money!" someone else said. And as another labelled it ridiculous, someone else agreed, writing: "Clearly not confident in her own idea to fully invest herself, putting up her property as collateral. "Guaranteed to fail." "She's got a nerve!" another commented. However, there were those in the comments who came to Gemma's defense. "She isn't making you invest!" one wrote. "I say fair play to her and wish her well."
