A miner in a safety helmet working in an underground tunnel. Earlier this year, after carefully reviewing the geology and history of the area and inspecting the site in and around its existing operations, the company found that there could be sufficient antimony in the three vein systems on the property to restart profitable mining activities. United States Antimony Corporation's (NYSEAMERICAN:UAMY) smelter, which is located next to these mines, is the only operating smelter in the United States. EGA starts-up final reduction cell in Abu Dhabi pilot project
Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has announced that it has started up the final reduction cell in the company's next generation smelting technology pilot project at Al Taweelah in Abu Dhabi. The pilot is a key step in readying EX smelting technology for large-scale industrialisation, making the project an important foundation of EGA's future growth and the further strengthening of EGA's position as the technology provider of choice in the global aluminium industry. EX is EGA's 10th generation smelting technology and produces more aluminium with less energy and lower emissions. Speaking on the occasion, Chairman Homaid Al Shimmari said: "EX technology enhances EGA's ability to remain at the forefront of the global aluminium industry. Our aim is to apply this technology in our planned facility in Oklahoma, the first new primary aluminium production plant to be built in the US since 1980." "As part of this effort, we will test the technology using alumina refined from bauxite sourced from multiple locations, to further prove its potential for global deployment," he stated. CEO Abdulnasser Bin Kalban said the pilot EX is a strategic project for EGA, and is the latest chapter in its long history of industry leadership through technology innovation. "The performance of EX reduction cells during start-up and in the first weeks of production has been even better than expected, and I am excited about what this technology will achieve," he added.-TradeArabia News Service Copyright 2024 Al Hilal Publishing and Marketing Group Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. Smelter Mishap Stokes Shutdown Push at Top Copper Miner Codelco
A recent mishap at a century-old copper smelter owned by Codelco is stoking debate over the pros and cons of shutting it down as a global smelting glut puts pressure on old, high-cost plants. Some at the Chilean state-owned miner are pushing for a permanent closure at the Potrerillos smelter, with a chimney collapse last month underscoring its deficiencies, said people with knowledge of the matter. They asked not to be identified given no decision has been made and it may not even go to the board.

Chinese Zinc Smelters Risk Run Cuts as Capacity Outpaces Demand
Chinese zinc smelters, which account for over half of global supply, face growing pressure to lower run rates as capacity expansion outpaces demand, according to Beijing Antaike Information Co. 'Risks for idling excess capacity are building as Chinese zinc demand nears its peak,' the state-owned researcher said in a note on Wechat. A reliance on imports for more than 30% of zinc concentrate supply has also curbed production, after processing fees plunged last year, it said.
