Group 1 box ticked for Ong, third title next

Trainer Jason Ong has finally landed his long-awaited Group 1 victory in six years of training, after Filial Dragon triumphed in the Perak Gold Vase (1,100m) in Ipoh on July 13. Despite being crowned Singapore champion trainer twice, the Group wins have eluded the 37-year-old Singaporean since he began training at Kranji in 2019. But Ong did come close when Major King - defeated by a nose - flew home for second to Pacific Emperor in the 2023 Group 3 Merlion Trophy (1,200m). This time, he went into the Perak Gold Vase with confidence, and Filial Dragon easily saluted by three lengths under Troy See. "I watched the race live and was happy with how it went. I was glad to tick that off my bucket list with a horse that's been with me since Kranji days," said Ong, who is in Australia. "It was definitely a memorable win as the Perak Gold Vase was first held in 1950. It's a great privilege to be part of history. "Super Salute was the biggest threat, but I told Troy to stay behind the speed and be patient because he (Filial Dragon) has a good turn of foot." With that maiden Group 1 win out of the way, Ong will now challenge himself for a third champion trainer's title, and his first one in Malaysia. "I always want to remain competitive and (winning) the title would mean a lot to me," said Ong, who sits on top on 57 wins. "It's a great effort from my team that horses are running well and I'm quite proud to be leading." sharonzhang@

Woman looking for $5,000 gold bracelet from late mum that she lost outside White Sands mall

Woman looking for $5,000 gold bracelet from late mum that she lost outside White Sands mall A woman is appealing for help in locating a gold bracelet that she lost outside White Sands shopping mall, near the drop-off point at Pasir Ris MRT station. Stomper Yati said she lost the bracelet on June 22, at around 1.10pm. The bracelet is engraved with her name 'Muliyati' in Jawi, a modified Arabic script used to write Malay. Yati told Stomp: "It was customised and gifted to me by my late mum. It's worth about $5,000 at this point, based on the current price of gold. "As a platform that has always helped people, I would like to appeal to Stomp to connect me with anyone who might have found the bracelet. Eyes on Price in Malaysia

Another Australian jockey is jumping on the Kuala Lumpur cameo bandwagon - Will Price. After the success gained by Blaike McDougall at his regular hit-and-runs to the Malaysian capital, a Victorian jockeys' room-mate is following suit. And just like McDougall, Price, 25, is coming up mainly for the Buffalo Stable and champion trainer Simon Dunderdale. Licensed only for one day at the Sungai Besi meeting on July 6, the son of former leading Adelaide jockey Simon Price, a regular fixture in both Singapore and Malaysia in the 90s, takes seven rides (Races 5 to 11) on the 12-race programme, including one emergency acceptor. Besides bookending his inaugural Malaysian stint with rides for Lawson Moy (Buffalo's The Star and Thunderstorm in Races 5 and 11 respectively), Price will be aboard Dunderdale's wards for the remaining five bookings. Unless first standby starter So You Fight gets a run in Race 6, the lightweight hoop will jump aboard Lightning Gal, Hypeman, Guru Fight and Valois. A former Melbourne champion apprentice (2020-21) and winner of more than 240 races, Price fired blanks at Singapore's last two meetings. But he is this time sitting atop a clutch of top fancies, such as last-start Buffalo winners Lightning Gal, The Star, debut winners Hypeman and Valois and the fast-improving Guru Fight. Likewise, McDougall had no luck at his one-day visit for the final Singapore race meeting, but has been an instant success across the Causeway. In 42 rides, he has chalked up an impressive strike rate of nine wins. manyan@

Hougang resident asks if unattended parcels are a common sight after stumbling upon his own package

Hougang resident asks if unattended parcels are a common sight after stumbling upon his own package Welcome to Stomping Ground - a space where Stompers share reflections, personal essays and social commentaries that spark conversation and insight. A Hougang resident was puzzled to see two large packages left unattended at a HDB lift lobby in Hougang. He was even more surprised when he realised that one of the packages belonged to him. Stomper Roger said: "J&T Express left the parcels unattended in the front lift lobby (not level 1) on June 5. "I saw these parcels in the morning when I was heading to work at 6.20am. When I returned from work at 9pm, the parcels were still there, so I decided to take a look. "It surprised me that one of the parcels belonged to me while the other belonged to the next block. "Based on my tracking records, the parcel should have been still outbound in the sorting centre." Roger said he contacted the delivery company the next day and sent them a photo of the unattended packages, but has yet to receive a response. He asked: "Do you often see this kind of issue?"
