BIXI launches bike-sharing service in Sherbrooke
SHERBROOKE, QC, July 4, 2025 /CNW/ - BIXI, in collaboration with the Société de transport de Sherbrooke (STS) and the City of Sherbrooke, is proud to announce the launch of the region's first bike-sharing service. The first phase will consist of 25 stations equipped with 255 bikes, 80% of which will be electric. This deployment offers Sherbrooke residents a sustainable, active, and accessible mode of transportation. This project is made possible thanks to a $1,105,581 financial contribution from the Quebec government as part of the Financial Assistance Program for the Development of Self-Service Bike Sharing (OVLIS) for the 2021-2022 fiscal year, a program stemming from the Sustainable Mobility Policy – 2030. At an event held today in Sherbrooke attended by Mayor Évelyne Beaudin, STS Chair Laure Letarte-Lavoie, and other local officials, BIXI officially launched the service. A well-equipped network geared to the region's needs The BIXI Sherbrooke network was designed to meet the specific requirements of the region, with stations strategically located near transportation hubs, educational institutions such as the University of Sherbrooke and Cégep de Sherbrooke, parks, and commercial areas. The number of stations and bikes will increase in the coming years. Users will be able to take advantage of flexible pricing, with monthly subscriptions as well as one-way trips for occasional travel. "I am pleased to see that this bike-sharing service is generating enthusiasm among the public. Our government remains an important partner in ensuring better access to various modes of transportation across all regions of Quebec. The project launched today will have a positive impact on the mobility and quality of life of our citizens in Estrie, which is my goal!" - Geneviève Guilbault, Minister of Transportation and Sustainable Mobility "It is a great pleasure to welcome BIXI to Sherbrooke! This service enhances our sustainable transportation options and makes our downtown even more attractive by facilitating access to businesses, contributing to the local economy. With electric bikes, even our hilly terrain becomes more welcoming! And this is just the beginning, with our cycling network constantly improving to make Sherbrooke even more welcoming for cyclists, both local and from elsewhere." - Évelyne Beaudin, Mayor of Sherbrooke "The rollout of this bike-sharing project fits perfectly with the STS's mission to promote sustainable and integrated mobility in Sherbrooke. By adding bike sharing services to our offering, we are promoting complementary modes of transportation and encouraging Sherbrooke residents to rethink their travel habits, one pedal stroke at a time," said Laure Letarte-Lavoie, President of the STS. Infosys Advocates Work-Life Balance, In Contrast to Narayana Murthy's Call for 70-Hour Workweeks
In a significant move aimed at promoting employee well-being, Infosys has reportedly launched an internal campaign to encourage its workforce to maintain a healthy work-life balance. The initiative focuses particularly on curbing overtime during remote work and encouraging staff to stick to regular working hours. According to a report by The Economic Times, the company's Human Resources (HR) team is actively tracking employees' remote work patterns and sending emails to those clocking more than the standard 9.15 hours per day. These emails serve as a nudge toward more balanced routines and a reminder of the importance of personal health and long-term professional sustainability. "We must work for 9.15 hours a day for five days a week, and if we overshoot this while working remotely, it prompts a trigger," one employee told the publication. The HR emails also contain detailed summaries of employees' work activity, including days worked remotely, total hours logged, and the average daily working time. The messages emphasize the need for adequate rest, advising employees to take breaks, disconnect after hours, delegate tasks when necessary, and speak up if they feel overwhelmed. 'Take time to recharge during off hours, minimising work-related interactions whenever possible,' read one such communication. This health-conscious shift comes after Infosys implemented a hybrid work model. Since November 20, 2023, employees have been required to report to the office at least 10 days each month. With this new work structure, HR teams began closely monitoring work hours to ensure employees aren't overextending themselves—especially outside traditional office settings. The backdrop of this policy is the growing concern around professionals facing lifestyle-related health issues such as poor sleep, cardiovascular problems, and stress—many stemming from overwork, irregular routines, and lack of personal time. With a global workforce of more than 323,000, Infosys is taking a proactive approach to mitigate these risks. 'While we appreciate your commitment, we also believe that maintaining a healthy work-life balance is crucial for both your well-being and long-term professional success,' the company stated in one of the HR communications. Interestingly, this approach stands in contrast to what Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy advocated just last year. Speaking at the centenary celebration of the Indian Chamber of Commerce in Kolkata, Murthy said that young Indians need to work significantly harder—suggesting 70-hour work weeks—to transform India into a global economic power. 'If we are not in a position to work hard, then who will work hard?' he questioned, while highlighting the struggles of 800 million Indians still living below the poverty line. Murthy, known for his disciplined work ethic, has consistently criticized the notion of a five-day work week. In a public appearance at the CNBC Global Leadership Summit in November, he said, 'I don't believe in this concept of work-life balance,' adding that true progress demands sacrifice and consistent effort. His remarks stirred significant debate across generations—while many admired his dedication, others questioned whether such expectations remain viable in today's fast-evolving and health-conscious IT work culture.

Sudan: Türk Warns Of Catastrophic Surge In Violence
GENEVA (20 June 2025) - UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk warned today of the disastrous consequences stemming from ongoing and escalating hostilities across the North Darfur and Kordofan regions in Sudan, where civilian casualties, sexual violence, abductions and looting have been reported in multiple areas. 'The recent fighting and grave risk of further aggravation in an already brutal and deadly conflict raise severe protection concerns, amid a pervasive culture of impunity for human rights violations,' the High Commissioner said. On 15 June, after a year-long siege, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched a further attack on El Fasher, following months of increased mobilisation of fighters, including the recruitment of children, across Darfur. The operation, with its ground offensive to capture the city, mirrors the RSF's offensive on the Zamzam camp for internally displaced people (IDPs) in April, which led to hundreds of civilian deaths, widespread sexual violence and a humanitarian catastrophe. In South Kordofan state, civilians also remain trapped by the fighting between the parties vying for control of the strategic town of Al Debibat. Meanwhile, in North Kordofan state, the RSF have reportedly surrounded the city of El Obeid, currently held by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and allied groups, and may attack it in the coming days, as announced by the RSF commander. 'We know where further escalation will lead,' Türk said. 'For too long already, the world has witnessed the unbound horrors unfolding in Sudan and the untold suffering of its people. Civilians must be protected at all costs. Violations and crimes must be thoroughly investigated and those responsible be held to account,' he added. 'I urge the parties to ensure civilians can safely leave El Fasher, Al Debibat, and El Obeid, as well as other places where civilians may be trapped by the conflict. All parties must refrain from attacking civilian objects, ultimately lay down their weapons and put an end to hostilities,' Türk said. 'I call on all States to exert their influence to press for a durable political solution, and to ensure respect by the parties to the conflict for international humanitarian law. I also urge them to press for an end to the flow of arms into the country, and to restrain the business interests sustaining this conflict.'
