Miss Manners: Constructive criticism not wanted here
Dear Miss Manners: My stepson is a successful novelist. I'm reading an advanced copy of his new book, which is brilliant, but contains a neurodivergent character that doesn't ring quite true to me. (I'm neurodivergent, if that matters.) In a recent conversation, I complimented him on his truly wonderful book, but when I tried to talk about this character in what I hoped was a light way, he said, coldly and dismissively, 'I don't care what you think.'

Marine Corps vet seen putting son, 6, through horrific 'boot camp' while wearing pink dog collar
Disturbing surveillance footage has emerged allegedly showing a Marine Corps veteran subjecting his six–year–old stepson to a twisted 'boot camp' inside their Miami home. The video captures 42–year–old Zachary Perez – arrested in May – dressed in black and dragging the young boy by a pink dog collar fastened around his neck, part of what prosecutors say was a sustained and brutal punishment routine. Another clip reportedly showed the child running outside with a heavy backpack full of rocks, while additional footage captures Perez kicking him repeatedly in both the living room and bedroom, according to court records. 'He had swollen eyes from being hit. He had numerous marks from the tree branch. He had scratches, bruises, and a rash on his neck from the collar,' a Miami–Dade officer testified during a bond hearing on May 20. Investigators say the abuse went on for at least two days, leaving the boy physically and emotionally traumatized. Prosecutors also revealed that Perez, who served in Iraq, has a long history of alleged violence. Court documents show at least five restraining orders have been filed against him by former partners – including one by his own 14–year–old daughter. The victim's mother reported the abuse to police after receiving threatening texts from Perez, according to testimony. 'This was the day she left to file the report,' the deputy said. 'He told her, "Get home." He said he was going to make her pay. 'You'll remember Mother's Day.' 'Your honor, it's the state's position that the defendant is a ticking time bomb,' Assistant State Attorney Lily Wisset told Judge Richard Hersch. 'He freaks out. He threatens to kill them. He says he'll kill his ex–wife, his kids – he's going to kill everybody. And he threatens them with a gun.' Perez's attorneys claimed the boy's mother had asked him to discipline the child – but prosecutors pushed back, saying the evidence contradicted that narrative. His mother, Barbara Perez, testified that her son suffers from PTSD and hearing loss after three combat deployments. She said he had undergone surgeries and was exposed to multiple IED explosions during his time in Iraq. It was said in court that the child went mute following the abuse but has since begun speaking again. Amanda Altman, CEO of the Kristi House child advocacy center, told NBC6 the boy likely suffered lasting trauma from the ordeal. Video evidence reportedly shows Perez engaged in further abuse, repeatedly kicking the child in the living room and bedroom 'What trauma would [Perez] have suffered that he never got the proper intervention to overcome?' she said. 'Certainly possible those things affected his decisions later in life.' Perez has pleaded not guilty and is currently under house arrest, with court–ordered mental health treatment. He has been ordered to stay away from both the child and the boy's mother while he awaits trial.

Woman Refuses to Pay for ‘Hostile' Stepson's Surgery: 'I Won't Buy My Way into Being His Mom'
A woman wondered if she was in the wrong for refusing to pay for her stepson's surgery On Reddit's AITA forum — where people share real-life dilemmas — she said her stepson has a history of "hostile" behavior toward her and made "mean-spirited" and "offensive" comments When she did not offer to pay for her stepson's surgery, her husband threatened to end the marriageA woman says she doesn't want to pay for her stepson's surgery after his 'hostile' behavior toward her, and after her husband refused to let her help pay for his college. A Redditor, who goes by the name Frosty_Woodpecker628, shared that she's always had a challenging relationship with her stepson, whom she called Ethan, in a post on Reddit's AITA subreddit — where people share real-life dilemmas and ask whether they are in the wrong. Ever since she married her husband five years ago, Ethan, who was 16 at the time and moved in, 'was hostile toward me. He never liked me and had kept me at arms length, and constantly hurt my feelings with his mean spirited, offensive comments about my age or living situation. He made it clear he didn't want me in his life,' she wrote. When his father was struggling financially, she shared that she offered to help pay for Ethan's college. 'I want to help, but my husband's response? 'You can't buy your way into being his mom.' That hurt. A lot. But okay. I respected their choice and didn't push.' She shared that her husband's attitude changed when Ethan recently got sick after dealing with an undisclosed medical condition, and was told he needed surgery. 'He reached out to his dad, asking for financial help. My husband came to me and asked if I'd be willing to contribute, hoping this might be a chance to rebuild a relationship. I just said no.' Her husband couched it as 'this could be the perfect opportunity to make things right between me and Ethan. I said 'I won't buy my way into being his mom, can I?' ' The Redditor shared that her husband 'didn't take it well. He said I was being cruel and petty, and now he's even saying he's 'reconsidering our marriage' because he thinks I should put the pettiness aside and help Ethan regardless. But I still refused.' In her post, she asked if she's the 'a------'. The verdict from Reddit? She should be the one reconsidering the marriage. 'Sounds like you're shouldering all the financial responsibility while receiving none of the respect from these relationships. Stand your ground,' the top comment, with 13,000 upvotes. Another replied, 'I'd be reconsidering the marriage and serving papers before her husband honestly. Dude and his kid are both a-------.' Most felt that she was being used for her financial contributions, as another commenter wrote she was justified 'within the context that your husband and step son have patterns of very s-----, exploitative behavior. They're nice if they need your cash, emotionally abusive if they don't. That's a giant problem. I'm sure this isn't an isolated incident.' And while one user did suggest that she help out for the sake of her marriage — they questioned if it was worth it: 'If you want to stay in the marriage swallow [your] pride and pain and help. Not because it might make Ethan like you more but because you'd be helping your husband's son and you care about your husband.' As they continued, 'But from what little you describe here I'm not sure you should want to stay married. It doesn't sound like he respects you very much and he's not contributing. Are you actually getting anything out of this relationship?' But one commenter had a different take: "She's justified in cutting this whole thing off, but the relationship is already over if she doesn't care about something medically bad happening to her partner's son." Violent dispute between stepfather and stepson erupts in Yishun rental flat; both arrested
SINGAPORE: An argument between a stepfather and his stepson escalated into a physical altercation at a rental flat in Yishun on Saturday morning, resulting in both men being arrested. The incident occurred around 10am at Block 510A Yishun Street 51. Eyewitnesses told Shin Min Daily News that police officers were seen arriving at the scene shortly after the commotion broke out. Residents familiar with the family said arguments were not uncommon in the unit, which is reportedly shared by a couple and a man in his 30s, believed to be the woman's son. 'They often argue,' one neighbour shared, 'That day, it turned into a fight. The younger man had a head injury, and the fight even spilled into the corridor.' Photos taken after the altercation showed the aftermath outside the flat — a broken shoe rack lay overturned, with footwear scattered across the corridor floor. When reporters visited the flat later, the unit appeared unoccupied. In response to media queries, the police and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) confirmed that a 35-year-old man had been taken conscious to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. A 57-year-old man sustained minor injuries but declined medical assistance. Both men were arrested for affray. Police investigations are ongoing.
