Body cam video shows Alberta RCMP officer being dragged while trying to stop driver of stolen vehicle

Morinville RCMP officer arresting a man after being dragged during a traffic stop at a gas station in Gibbons. (Source: RCMP) A Morinville RCMP officer was dragged during a traffic stop for a stolen vehicle at a Shell gas station in Gibbons on Tuesday. RCMP say while officers were on patrol they had a reason to run the license plate of this vehicle. 'When he went to approach the vehicle and detain the occupants, the driver of the vehicle was able to start it, put it into drive and began driving away, essentially, and reversing, trapping the officer between the door and the vehicle as it was driving back into him,' RCMP public information officer Troy Savinkoff told CTV News Edmonton. During the altercation the officer was able to pull the keys from the vehicle as it hit a tree. When the officer went to arrest the occupants, the driver pulled out a shotgun from between the seats, left the vehicle and threw it into the bed of the truck, Savinkoff said. There were four people inside the vehicle at the time. They're all facing a variety of charges, including possession of stolen property, having small amounts of meth and fentanyl, weapons offences and more. The officer involved suffered minor injuries. Savinkoff says this is a reminder of the risks officers take while on patrol. 'With each of these drops, usually is because of an arrest of a prolific offender, or those people that we're focusing on that are causing the most harm to the public,' Savinkoff said. Everyday there are on average 2.2 acts of violence toward RCMP officers in Alberta, RCMP said. 'Since 2023, instances of assault on police with a weapon or causing bodily harm have increased 23 per cent,' said Darcy McGunigal with Morinville RCMP in the new release. 'While we highlight dropping CSI crime rates and the most recent 18 per cent drop in stolen vehicles compared to last year, don't forget that with each of these arrests there are men and women on the front lines putting their safety at risk combating these prolific offenders.' All four drivers were remanded into custody and appeared in court on Thursday.

Colorado man sentenced to 13 years in prison after police chase that ended at the Outlets at Castle Rock

A Colorado man has been sentenced to 13 years in prison after he crashed a stolen vehicle into several patrol vehicles while trying to escape from police three years ago. It happened at the Outlets at Castle Rock in January 2022, and the pursuit was caught on camera. Police tracked that stolen vehicle from Englewood and, after the driver began his attempted escape, rammed into it head-on in order to stop it. Officers captured the driver shortly after the car went over a median and he got out of his car and tried to run away. Roy Elliott-Casaus pleaded guilty to several charges, including assault on a peace officer, aggravated motor vehicle theft and vehicular eluding. 23rd Judicial District Attorney's Office Deputy DA Jonathan Steinberg said in a prepared statement that the driver "treated a shopping center like a racetrack." "Casaus thought he could outrun law enforcement in a stolen car, but crashing into reality, literally, brought his joy ride to an end," Steinberg said. Elliott-Casaus, 33, is from the southern Colorado city of Trinidad. He is also serving a 6 year prison sentence for a different crime that took place in southern Colorado.

Sydney to Canberra police chase after routine traffic stop

A man has finally been arrested following a three hour police chase from inner Sydney to Canberra after he was found driving an allegedly stolen vehicle. Officers attached to Sydney City Police Area Command were patrolling at the busy intersection of Cleveland and Bourke Streets in Surry Hills about 10pm on Tuesday, when they attempted to stop a white hatchback, believed to be stolen. A check revealed the vehicle was allegedly stolen from Melbourne last Saturday. A pursuit was initiated after the hatchback crashed into marked police vehicle and allegedly attempted to flee the scene, NSW Police said in a statement. The driver of the police vehicle was not injured. A short time later, the pursuit was terminated due to safety concerns. Video from AirPolice shows the vehicle zooming past 18-wheelers almost two hours into the 286km journey. Officers from multiple commands, including the Hume Police District, Monaro Police District, Traffic and Highway Patrol Command and PolAir, were involved in the pursuit before the crossed the border into the ACT. ACT Police arrested the man about 1am Wednesday in Downer in Canberra's northern suburbs. The 43-year-old remains in the custody of ACT Policing at this time and is to be extradited to NSW.
