Vietnam: Tourist boat capsizes, 34 dead

A tourist boat in Vietnam capsized on Saturday, leaving 34 people dead and several others missing. The vessel was carrying 53 people, when it capsized while doing a tour of northern Vietnam's famous Ha Long Bay. Most of the passengers were tourists from the capital Hanoi, local media said. Ha Long Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which spans over 1,500 square kilometers (579 square miles). It is filled with nearly 2,000 islands and islets and is considered one of Vietnam's most popular tourist destinations, attracting millions of visitors each year. What happened to the boat? The vessel, dubbed Wonder Sea, was carrying 48 tourists and five crew members at the time of the capsizing, including families with children, VNExpress news outlet reported. Sudden stormy weather landed in Ha Long Bay, with heavy rain and strong winds that appear to have caused the Wonder Sea to overturn. There were "hailstones as big as toes with torrential rain, thunderstorm and lightning", Ha Long Bay office worker Tran Trong Hung told the French AFP news agency. What do we know about the victims? Rescuers recovered 34 bodies on site. Some 11 people were rescued, while eight are still missing. Among those confirmed dead were eight children, VNExpress reported. The news outlet said a 14-year-old boy was among the survivors. He was rescued four hours after being trapped in the overturned hull. Authorities would "investigate and clarify the cause of the incident and strictly handle violations", a statement on the government website said.

Severe thunderstorms could bring strong winds to parts of upstate NY Thursday

Some stormy weather could sweep through western and central New York on Thursday afternoon, bringing the potential for wind gusts up to 60 mph, according to the National Weather Service in Buffalo. The Weather Service has issued a notice of marginal risk for severe thunderstorms Thursday afternoon into the evening. The primary threat: damaging wind gusts from scattered thunderstorms. There's also a slight chance for quarter-sized hail in some areas, said Meteorologist Dan Kelly. High temperatures are forecast to reach the mid-80s on both Thursday and Friday, before climbing into the 90s over the weekend in upstate New York. Alert Day: Risk of severe storms during the evening commute is increasing

Stormy weather is possible in Maryland Thursday as a heat wave continues to bring temperatures in the low 90s. Feels like temperatures will reach 100° to 105° ahead of late-day downpours. Heat, humidity, stormy weather in Maryland The risk of a few severe storms is increasing across central Maryland, prompting a WJZ Alert Day until 8 p.m. Scattered strong to severe storms will develop anytime today, but especially after lunchtime. The most numerous strong storms should be between 3 p.m. and 11 p.m. The risk of severe storms impacting your evening is greatest before 8 p.m. A few storms could produce drenching downpours, very intense lightning, gusty winds and hail. Widespread severe weather isn't likely, but a few storms could be severe with wind gusts up to 60 to 65 mph. A Flood Watch is in effect for the I-95 corridor through early evening. Temperatures have soared into the 90s again. High levels of humidity are pushing feels like temperatures into the 100° to 105° range for most of us. Everyone is advised to take frequent breaks in the A/C and drink plenty of water. Remember to keep a close eye and ear out for rapidly changing weather conditions. When thunder roars, head indoors. Heat alerts in Maryland A heat advisory is in effect for central Maryland until 7 p.m. Thursday. Feels like temperatures will approach 105° (and a handful of neighborhoods could surpass that mark) across the WJZ Viewing Area. Even though extreme heat warnings have been lifted, the heat can be dangerous, especially to the sick and elderly when the feels like temperature surpasses 100°. Staying cool during Maryland heat wave Here are a few ways to stay safe and healthy while working outside during extreme heat: Wear loose-fitting, light colored clothing Avoid being in the direct rays of the sun Take frequent breaks if you plan to be outdoors Drink lots of water, even if you don't feel thirsty. Two liters of water a day is recommended Remember pets and the elderly in the heat Make sure ceiling fans are circulating counterclockwise to circulate cooler air downward A list of cooling centers is available HERE. Major relief Friday Behind the cold front that eases through our area later today and tonight, much cooler weather filters into most of Maryland. Friday will be cooler as the cold front continues to sink south of us. High temperatures may not reach 80° for areas along the Bay, Baltimore City, and most of northeast Maryland. There is another chance of showers and storms Friday. Rain coverage remains spotty. Summer weather weekend in Maryland The upcoming weekend will be seasonably hot and muggy. Expect variable clouds, with hot and muggy weather. Scattered thunderstorms will develop during the afternoon and evening hours. These storms will be of the hit-or-miss variety. Not every neighborhood will get wet. Neighborhoods that do receive storms could receive locally heavy rainfall, cloud-to-ground lightning and gusty winds. Temperatures peak in the upper 80s and lower 90s both weekend afternoons. It'll feel hotter when mugginess is factored in.

These are the subscriptions I actually don't mind paying for

Andy Walker / Android Authority No one likes paying for something more than once, but subscriptions have become an annoying yet necessary part of life. Some are hard to justify, but others add value to my life. Whether they provide consumable content, weather information, or critical navigation data, these are the subscriptions I don't mind paying for: How many subscription services and apps are you currently paying for? 0 votes None. NaN % 1-4. NaN % 5-9. NaN % 10 or more. NaN % FlightRadar24 Andy Walker / Android Authority I've used this real-time flight tracking app for years before upgrading to a Gold subscription. The free version is sufficient if you only need basic information about flight locations. However, I craved even more. The Gold subscription offers additional features for avgeeks. It lets me bookmark more flights, access airport and flight histories for up to a year, and includes detailed real-time weather layers. The latter is so accurate that this service doubles as a standalone weather app. Although its annual price is expensive, and I've considered downgrading to Silver, I find it invaluable for checking weather conditions before and during flights, especially during the stormy South African summer. Meteogram Weather Widget Andy Walker / Android Authority I've praised Meteogram Weather Widget for years and still believe it's the best weather app on Android. The ad-supported free version is excellent for general use but lacks the customizability and source selection I desire. To summarize my setup, I use three separate instances of the Meteograms widget, covering the next 12 hours, four days ahead, and an additional week. This setup provides a comprehensive weather outlook for a region that often experiences all four seasons in a day. No other app can offer me the same breadth of information or control. I decided to pay for the Pro version and the Platinum subscription, which costs slightly more than a loaf of bread annually. It's worth every penny and more. NordVPN Andy Walker / Android Authority Every internet user needs a VPN, and after much consideration, I chose NordVPN. Nord was the easiest and most reliable option I tried, which is also crucial for my partner. I use it across multiple devices, nearing the 10-device limit. This more than justifies its annual fee. Although it's one of the pricier subscriptions I pay for, it gives me peace of mind. I may consider another VPN service in the future, but Nord suits my needs for now. F1TV Andy Walker / Android Authority As a Formula 1 fan, I can't imagine not having access to support races, grands prix, and past events. F1TV is the sport's dedicated streaming service, providing access to all the above on multiple devices. The service has three tiers, and I opt for the middle option, Pro. It offers access to all timing and telemetry, onboard cameras, support series races, and past content. It's pricey, but worth it for enjoying the sport I've loved for over two decades. A more expensive option allows for 4K streaming and multiple simultaneous streams on a single device, but that little trick is limited to Apple products for now. Netflix Dhruv Bhutani / Android Authority As certified couch potatoes, my partner and I subscribe to several streaming platforms. She subscribes to Disney+ and local service Showmax, while I subscribe to Netflix. Yes, it would make sense to rotate subscriptions based on our interests and releases each month, but we switch between multiple shows too often for that to be practical. Even though I think it's overpriced for what it offers, the 4K tier allows us to enjoy all the pixels and spatial audio on my modest LG TV when available. Notably, I've grabbed plenty of games off the Play Store thanks to Netflix, too! Spotify Ryan Haines / Android Authority Spotify is my favorite music streaming service because its recommendations are more reliable than any other service. It also helps that I can access my favorite music from multiple devices and seamlessly switch between them. It's indispensable, especially for PlayStation and Android Auto users. We're a household of two, so Spotify Duo works perfectly. It's far cheaper than paying for two separate subscriptions, especially since we each have specific tastes. Google One Joe Maring / Android Authority I started paying for Google One nearly a decade ago to back up important photos and documents. I use the 200GB plan but'll soon need more storage or an alternative. My partner also uses the storage as part of my family group, so switching services will be tricky. A self-hosted solution is in the planning stages, but decision inertia is real. I know that for the price of a One subscription, I could save up for a large hard drive, but the convenience of One is still compelling. OsmAnd Andy Walker / Android Authority Finally, the latest addition to my subscription list is OsmAnd Maps+ Annual. Why pay for an open-source app? I can only access the app via Android Auto through this tier, which has become essential for road trips through my region's back roads. Like several other subscriptions on this list, OsmAnd's value far outweighs the modest annual fee. I've detailed the subscription services I happily pay for monthly and annually. Now it's your turn. Weather: More than a hundred homes without power in Bay of Plenty

Stormy weather is passing over the North Island. Photo: RNZ/ Calvin Samuel Power is out in parts of the upper North Island as bad weather passes over . Earlier severe thunderstorm warnings have now been lifted, but a heavy rain watch remains in place for Bay of Plenty. PowerCo's outage map shows about 170 properties in Western Bay of Plenty are without electricity. Earlier outages in Auckland and Northland appear to be resolved. Niwa principal scientist Chris Brandolino told Checkpoint the place you don't want to be when there is lightning in and around your area is outside. "You definitely don't want to be on the water or on the beach or under a single tree in a paddock. Lightning is lazy, lightning is going to go for the tallest thing out there." He said the safest place to be is inside, away from windows: "There is an expression - when thunder roars, head indoors." Brandolino explained that thunder is a result of lightning. "Lightning is so hot - roughly five times hotter than the surface of the sun - it expands the air quite violently and then the air comes back, and it's that process that creates the thunder and loud noise."
