Injured student tells of horror and confusion after 19 hurt as bus crashes into Hampshire river

A student has described the moment a double-decker bus he was on board crashed into a river, seriously injuring five people. Several teenagers and the driver were trapped inside the vehicle after it veered off the road in Eastleigh, Hampshire. The bus was taking 19 students to Barton Peveril Sixth Form College when it crashed at around 10am on Thursday in Bishopstoke Road and ended up in the River Itchen. A witness said the driver told them the bus had suffered mechanical failure and the brakes stopped working. One of the students on board, called Freddie Sampson, told of the moment of the crash, and the panic that ensued after. 'We ran into a lamp-post and the whole windscreen shattered,' Freddie Sampson told the BBC. 'It was like we couldn't stop and had to weave through traffic trying not to hit any cars and then the bus driver lost control – we went flying into the river. 'It was all a bit manic. No-one really knew what was going on. I looked out the front to see people moving out of the way, like cars out the front… I looked round... they were all confused and scared.' In a video of the incident, a student on board the bus can be heard saying: 'Oh my god, we are going to die, we're actually going to die' before screaming can be heard and the footage ends. Kelly West, who lives nearby and rushed to the scene, said the driver had told her the brakes had failed and the accelerator jammed. 'I heard some noise, looked out of the window and he just came careening into the river,' she said. Ms West said people were shouting and she found the driver trapped. She said: 'I told him to stop panicking, help was on its way, and he said the brakes failed and the accelerator was jammed and that he was trying to avoid cars.' Inspector Andy Tester, of Hampshire Constabulary, said five people were taken to hospital for treatment. Two of those – the driver and a passenger – had injuries that were serious but not life-threatening, while 14 others, with less serious injuries, were treated at the scene, he said. A total of 19 people were hurt. 'It must have been terrifying, and my thoughts are very much with the children and the driver on the bus, who must have had a terrifying experience,' he said. Mr Tester praised the bravery of passers-by and emergency services in freeing those trapped. The mother of one student said she panicked on hearing about the crash but praised the driver's actions. Gabriela McInnes Perez Cabrera wrote on Facebook: 'My son has just arrived from college. One of his friends sustained a minor injury and went to class after the accident. 'My son showed me a video taken by one student when the bus couldn't stop. They were so scared, the poor ones. 'I think the bus driver did their best and pulled to the river instead of going ahead as they were entering a more populated area.' Another mother said on hearing the news she felt nervous and also panicked. 'I rushed straight here as quick as I could but I couldn't get to my daughter. I'm panicking until I get to see her,' the woman, identified only as Annabel, told the BBC. Police said removing the badly damaged bus, which had ended up in the water below the road level, would be a complex operation. Richard Tyldsley, general manager of bus company Bluestar, said: 'Our thoughts are with everybody involved, and we wish those who were injured a full and speedy recovery. 'At this time, we do not know the circumstances behind this incident and are carrying out an immediate investigation. We are also assisting the police as they carry out their own inquiries.'

17 injured as bus carrying students crashes into river in Hampshire

Seventeen people were injured when a double-decker bus carrying sixth-form college students crashed into a river. Three passengers were taken to hospital and 14 others were treated at the scene after the bus came to rest upright in the River Itchen. Fire crews with stretchers helped take people off the bus, which was carrying students who attend Barton Peveril Sixth Form College in Eastleigh, Hampshire. At least five ambulances were sent to the residential road where the incident happened and air ambulances were scrambled. A spokesperson for South Central ambulance service said: 'We have sent multiple units to the incident including five ambulances, two helicopters, and specialist response units. 'Three high priority patients are being taken to hospital. Around 14 with less serious injuries are being treated on scene.' A spokesperson for the college said: 'We are aware of an incident involving the college 607 bus. College staff are working closely with the police to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all students. 'We ask that people do not attend the actual scene. For concerned parents, an incident centre has been established.' Richard Tyldsley, general manager of Bluestar Bus, said: 'One of our buses, carrying students to Barton Peveril College, was involved in an incident. Reports suggest the bus left the highway and came to rest in a shallow river.' He said the bus driver was injured. Scott Agass, the father of a 17-year-old who was on the bus, said: 'I think they are all out. He said he was sitting there with a blanket and a monitor on his finger. He doesn't really know what happened or what caused it. I suppose it just happened so quick. All he saw was that it crashed and gone in the river.' A Hampshire and Isle of Wight police spokesperson said: 'We are currently dealing with an incident on Bishopstoke Road in Eastleigh, where a bus has left the carriageway into a river. 'Emergency services are in attendance and the road has been closed so please avoid the area if you can.'

Sword attack victim at Brandon high school back home recovering

(Alex Karpa/CTV News) The victim of a sword attack at a Brandon high school said the incident didn't feel real. Chinonso Onuke, a Grade 10 student at Neelin High School, is at home recovering a week after being stabbed multiple times by a fellow student at the school. 'In the moment, I was not thinking at all,' Chinonso told CTV News Tuesday. He remembers the lunch break was just about to end and he was doing one more lap in the hallways when he saw someone dressed in all black, including wearing a 'witch doctor mask.' He said he thought it was a weird attire to wear at school and then asked the person's name before turning around and walking away. 'I'm walking away, I turn back. Something makes me turn back…and he's pulling out a sword,' he said. 'Before I can even think, he lunges at me, gets the first one in my abdomen.' Chinonso remembers falling to the floor and being slashed again in the leg, then stabbed in the shoulder and chest. 'He was about to go for my core, like my heart, stomach area. So I just end up grabbing the blade with my hands, then he tries to pull it, I don't let go. I pushed it away and I just booked it to the office.' Chinonso Onuke Chinonso Onuke suffered multiple wounds after being attack by someone with a sword at his Brandon high school. Uploaded June 17, 2025. (Alex Karpa/CTV News) Brandon police said last week that students alerted the school's resource officer and police arrived a short time later. A 16-year-old student was found with a sword. He was Tasered by police and arrested. The incident caused the school to be locked down. The suspect has been charged with attempted murder, uttering threats, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and disguise with intent. The charges haven't been tested in court. Chinonso has wounds on his shoulder, chest, abdomen, upper thigh, and forearm and seven of his fingers were deeply cut. He was rushed to hospital. 'The whole thing happened so fast, you would think it's a dream. You wouldn't think it's real. So I was just there, kind of wondering, 'Yo, did this actually happen, or am I just dreaming?'' Chinonso's mom, Helen Onuke, remembers getting a call and being told there was an accident. She got to the hospital and was told her son was in trauma. 'I said to myself, 'Helen, breathe. Breathe and brace yourself.' Then I got in there and there was like 20 nurses and doctors and he's like, just all blood,' Helen said. Chinonso Onuke Chinonso Onuke in hospital after the attack. June 11, 2025. (Helen Onuke) Chinonso was taken to Winnipeg the next day for an emergency surgery to try and repair all the tendon and nerve damage. Helen said she was scared to hear what had happened and has to try to prevent herself from thinking about what else could have happened. 'Because, you're thinking, 'What if he did not turn around?' With such a sword, he could have just cut his head off. Can you imagine going to school and that happens? No. You send your kids to school and you're thinking they are safe. It's supposed to be the safest place.' She said she wants officials with the school and provincial government to come together and work on a plan to ensure the school will be safe for all students moving forward. Chinonso went back to the school three days after the attack to visit. He said he was a little in shock at first, but that quickly disappeared as he realized the school isn't a bad place, rather, something bad happened there. 'You just got to understand to separate the action of what happened from the area.' - With files from CTV's Alex Karpa and Katherine Dow
