CRIMSON TIDE 2 Is Surfacing: Jerry Bruckheimer Teases Sequel, Eyes Denzel Washington's Return — GeekTyrant
It's been three decades since Crimson Tide first detonated in theaters. This was an intense, claustrophobic thriller of submarine warfare, nuclear standoffs, and powerhouse performances. I never thought we'd ever see a sequel, but producer Jerry Bruckheimer is ready to dive back into the deep.
During a recent appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, Bruckheimer revealed that a Crimson Tide sequel is in early development.
'We have a really good director and writer talking to the navy right now about what's going on under the water.'
Bruckheimer didn't drop any names, but the project is in motion! The big question is will Denzel Washington return as Commander Hunter? Well, Bruckheimer said:
'If we give him a good script, I think he'd do it.'
A source close to Washington confirmed that his involvement hinges entirely on the script, which, as of now, hasn't been completed.
If Washington does come aboard, he'll be without his original on-screen counterpart. Gene Hackman, who played the hard-ass Captain Ramsey, passed away earlier this year at age 95. The original director, Tony Scott, and co-writer Robert Towne have also passed on.
Reflecting on the original film's talent, Bruckheimer said:
'We had Tony Scott, a phenomenal director. We had Quentin Tarantino and Robert Towne, two of the greatest writers and directors, writing on that movie. … I don't know if I'll ever replicate that kind of writing for a film.'
While Michael Schiffer received the official screenwriting credit, Crimson Tide went through several hands. Quentin Tarantino added uncredited dialogue punch-ups, and names like Warren Beatty, Al Pacino, Tommy Lee Jones, and Brad Pitt circled the project at various stages.
Bruckheimer, who stopped by Eisen's show to promote his upcoming racing film F1 no stranger to slow-burn sequels. After all, it took nearly four decades to get Top Gun: Maverick off the ground. He's hoping the same won't be true for Crimson Tide 2 .
As for the upcoming Top Gun 3 , Bruckheimer teased:
'I can't talk about [the story] yet, but it's a real good one.'
I would love to see Bruckheimer get Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinki on board with this! I know he's make a badass sequel! The original movie is freakin' fantastic!
