Gmail could soon help you skim your entire inbox without opening any emails (APK teardown)

Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority TL;DR Gmail is working on a new feature that could display a one-line AI summary directly in your inbox in the main email list. Such brief, auto-updating synopses could help you quickly scan long conversations without opening them. When the feature rolls out, users will also be able to provide feedback on the one-line summaries with 'Helpful' or 'Not Helpful' votes. One of the most common use cases for AI is using it for summarizing content. AI summaries are really helpful in condensing information from long threads for skimming through, and you can always read through the whole conversation if you need more details. Gmail implemented automatic Gemini summary cards in the Android app late last month, and it seems the service could expand these summaries into the main email list too. An APK teardown helps predict features that may arrive on a service in the future based on work-in-progress code. However, it is possible that such predicted features may not make it to a public release. Gmail users can trigger AI-based summaries in several ways. They can manually trigger an email summary on any email by clicking the 'Summarize this email' button at the top of the message. This will open Gemini and show a summary of the thread. Gmail also automatically creates AI summaries on long email threads or messages with several replies — the summary also keeps up to date with any new replies. However, both of these options require users to be in a specific email thread, which makes skimming through messages less efficient. Gmail v2025.06.22 includes code for enabling email summary cards right out in the main email list. These appear to be a super-condensed one-line summary of the entire email thread. We managed to activate the feature ahead of its release to give you an early look: As you can see in the first screenshot, the first email has a one-liner email summary visible. Other email threads aren't as long, so they don't need a summary in the main email list per se. Even with just one summarized email, coupled with other summary cards like for orders (see the Shiprocket 'Expected' and 'Delivered' summary in the first screenshot), you can see how the main email list becomes skimmable, letting you go through one full screen of emails and figure out what you need to action. Naturally, there's only so much information that a one-liner summary can provide, so you can't rely on it to completely tell you all the details on all long threads. Still, it would be a convenient way to have up-to-date information displayed in the main email list. As you can see in the third screenshot, you can long-press on emails with one-liner summaries and tap on the three-dot menu to get the 'Helpful summary' and 'Not a helpful summary' voting options. Google has yet to announce this change for Gmail. Given its utility in taming wild inboxes, we hope to see it roll out soon. Got a tip? Talk to us! Email our staff at Email our staff at news@ . Wikipedia pauses AI-generated summaries pilot after editors protest

In Brief Wikipedia has reportedly paused an experiment that used AI to summarize articles on its platform after editors pushed back. Wikipedia announced earlier this month it was going to run the experiment for users who have the Wikipedia browser extension installed and chose to opt in, according to 404 Media. AI-generated summaries showed up at the top of every Wikipedia article with a yellow 'unverified' label. Users had to click to expand and read them. Editors almost immediately criticized the pilot, raising concerns that it could damage Wikipedia's credibility. Often, the problem with AI-generated summaries is that they contain mistakes, the result of AI 'hallucinations.' News publications running similar experiments, like Bloomberg, have been forced to issue corrections and, in some cases, scale back their tests. While Wikimedia has paused its experiment, the platform has indicated it's still interested in AI-generated summaries for use cases like expanding accessibility.

Gemini now summarizes Gmail emails automatically and by default

Gemini will start summarizing your emails in Gmail automatically and by default. The summaries will appear at the top of the email content "for messages where a summary is helpful", Google says, "such as longer email threads or messages with several replies". Gemini will synthesize all the key points from the email thread and will automatically update the summary to include information from any subsequent replies. Before, you needed to tap "Summarize this email" at the top of a message in order to get this functionality that is now on by default and automatic. The feature is currently only rolling out for emails in English. For those emails that aren't flagged by Gemini as being ones where a summary would be helpful, it won't be automatically generated but you can still manually prompt it by tapping the Summarize this email chip at the top. The rollout to everyone is expected to take up to 15 days. Note that this will only be available, for now, to Google Workspace subscribers, Google One AI Premium subscribers, and customers with Gemini Education or Gemini Education Premium. Source

Gemini will now automatically summarize your long emails unless you opt out

Google's AI assistant, Gemini, is gaining a more prominent place in your inbox with the launch of email summary cards, which will appear at the top of your emails. The company announced Thursday that users would have to tap an option to summarize an email with AI. However, the AI will now automatically summarize the content when needed, without requiring user interaction. When Gemini launched in the side panel of Gmail last year, one of the features allowed users to summarize their long email threads, along with other tools like those to draft email messages or see suggested responses, among other things. Now, Google is putting the AI to work on your inbox, whether or not it's something you want to use. The update is another example of how AI is quickly infiltrating the software and services people use the most, even though AI summaries aren't always reliable. When Apple rolled out AI summaries for app push notifications, for example, the BBC found the feature made repeated mistakes when summarizing news headlines. Apple ended up pausing the AI summaries for news apps. Google's own AI Overviews feature for Search has also repeatedly made mistakes, offering poor quality and inaccurate information at times. With the new email summary cards, Gemini will list a longer email's key points and will then continue to update that synopsis as replies arrive. The feature won't replace the option to manually click a button to summarize an email, Google notes. That will still appear as a chip at the top of the email and in Gmail's Gemini side panel.
