In ‘Heads of State,' the special relationship is strictly situational
On its shiny, happy surface, the action comedy 'Heads of State' is so innocuously disposable that it barely merits attention, let alone critique. Anchored by two enormously appealing stars and unfailingly faithful to the strictures of the genre, this summertime programmer — scheduled just in time to divert filmgoers after they've seen 'F1' and before 'Superman' arrives in theaters — is the kind of cheerfully banal, easy lift that feels custom-made for airplane viewing: It might as well come with its own tray table in the open, unlocked position. (Then again, it's available only on Amazon, so … same thing?)

What to watch on Netflix Canada: New TV shows and movies, plus what's being removed in July 2025
There's no better way to beat the summer heat than having a binge-watch session or a movie marathon, and Netflix Canada has a lot to offer in July. Several new TV shows and movies being released are incredibly exciting, but it's also your last change to watch some favourites before they're removed from the streaming site next month. Field of Dreams, starring Kevin Costner, the late James Earl Jones and Ray Liotta, and a young Gaby Hoffmann, will only be available to watch on Netflix until June 20. Additionally, the 2022 documentary Shania Twain: Not Just A Girl will be removed from the platform on July 25. For comedy fans, Neighbors with Seth Rogen, Zach Efron and Rose Byrne, Step Brothers starring Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, She's All That with Rachael Leigh Cook and Freddie Prinze Jr., and She's Out of My League starring Jay Baruchel and Alice Eve are all being removed from Netflix in July. Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning is also leaving Netflix, along with The Northman, Johnny Depp's 2009 film Public Enemies, and the 1987 movie 84 Charing Cross Road, starring Anthony Hopkins, Judi Dench and the late Anne Bancroft. Victoria Mahoney, notably the first woman to direct a Star Wars film, has now she's taken on the sequel to The Old Guard. Charlize Theron is back as Andromache of Scythia, aka Andy, along with her team of immortals as she faces a reunion with Quyhn (Veronica Van), who's out for revenge after being trapped in an iron maiden. The cast is also joined by Uma Thurman and Henry Golding in the continuation of this thrilling story. The second and final season of The Sandman will be released in three parts, starting with six episodes on July 3, then episodes seven to 11 will arrive on Netflix July 24, followed by the finale on July 31. It begins just weeks after the end of the first season, as Dream (Tom Sturridge) is working to restore his kingdom. "Dream must confront longtime friends and foes, gods, monsters, and mortals. But the path to forgiveness is full of unexpected twists and turns, and true absolution may cost Dream everything," the synopsis for the season reads. Variety confirmed the show was coming to an end in January, shortly after several sexual misconduct allegations where made against writer Neil Gaiman, but the publication identified that the series was set to be only two seasons prior to filming in 2023. Starring Megan Stalter, written and directed by Lena Dunham, the highly-anticipated series Too Much premieres next month. The show follows Jessica (Stalter), a New York workaholic in her 30s who's "reeling" from a breakup, and she decides the best decision is to take a job in London. But then she has a connection with Felix (Will Sharpe), described as "a walking series of red flags," creating more problems for Jessica than solutions. Eric Bana plays Kyle Turner in Untamed, an Investigative Services Branch agent of the National Parks Service who's on the hunt for a killer on the grounds of Yosemite. Turner is accompanied by Naya Vasquez (Lily Santiago), a rookie park ranger. Rosemarie DeWitt plays Turner's ex-wife, a former teacher and park counsellor, who's still connected to her ex-husband due to significant events in their pasts. The wait is almost over for Adam Sandler's Happy Gilmore 2, nearly 30 years after the original movie was released in 1996. The film begins as Happy has retired from golf, but financial struggle brings him back to the sport. The cast of Happy Gilmore 2 also includes Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio aka Bad Bunny, Travis Kelce, Sadie and Sunny Sandler, Blake Clark, Jackie Sandler, Eric André, Margaret Qualley, and many more stars. Leanne Morgan stars in and co-created her own scripted comedy series, inspired by her stand-up. The show begins as the title character's husband of 33 years leaves her for another woman, leading to her unexpected "new start" as a grandmother in menopause. Disney's ‘Lilo & Stitch' tops N.America box office for third week
LOS ANGELES, June 9 — Disney's family-friendly 'Lilo & Stitch' kept up its dominance of the early summer North American box office, winning for a third week in a row with $32.5 million in ticket sales, industry estimates showed Sunday. The live-action remake of a 2002 animated film of the same name has so far raked in US$335.8 million in the United States and Canada, and another US$436 million abroad, Exhibitor Relations said. Maia Kealoha (as Lilo), Hannah Waddingham, Courtney B. Vance and Zach Galifianakis star, while Chris Sanders again provides the voice of the chaos-creating blue alien Stitch. Debuting in second place at US$25 million was Lionsgate's 'Ballerina,' a 'John Wick' spin-off starring Ana de Armas as a dancer turned contract killer, and co-starring Anjelica Huston. Keanu Reeves makes a brief appearance as the hitman Wick. 'This is a weak opening for an action thriller spin-off,' said David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research. 'Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning'—the latest, and ostensibly last, in the hugely successful Tom Cruise spy thriller series based on a 1960s TV show—took third place with US$15 million. The Paramount film has now grossed more than $449 million worldwide. In fourth place was Sony's 'Karate Kid: Legends,' a sequel featuring Ralph Macchio—the star of the original 1984 classic—and action flick icon Jackie Chan, along with Ben Wang in the title role. It made US$8.7 million at the domestic box office in its second week in theaters. And finishing up the top five was Warner Bros. and New Line's horror film 'Final Destination: Bloodlines,' at $6.5 million. It has grossed $123.6 million so far at the domestic box office. Best Movies Streaming in June 2025: 'A Minecraft Movie' Debuts on Max
As the summer movie season continues in theaters this month with expected blockbusters like Brad Pitt's 'F1,' the live-action 'How to Train Your Dragon' remake, the 'John Wick' spinoff 'Ballerina' and more, one of the year's biggest movie sensations will actually be available to watch from home. Enter 'A Minecraft Movie' on Max. The Warner Bros. release dominated the spring box office with $940 million worldwide and caused a social media frenzy thanks to rowdy screenings in which popcorn buckets were thrown and the phrase 'chicken jockey!' was chanted by millions. Starting June 1, a collection of classic Hitchcock films will be available to stream in the U.S. Those include 'Vertigo,' 'Rear Window,' 'Frenzy,' 'The Man Who Knew Too Much,' 'Family Plot' and 'The Birds.' These titles join Hitchcock's genre-defining masterpiece 'Psycho,' which had already been available on the streaming platform. In addition, Netflix's Hitchcock collection will include fan-favorite films inspired by the iconic director, such as Jordan Peele's 'Us' and Zach Cregger's 'Barbarian.'As part of Netflix's June celebration of Alfred Hitchcock (see above), the streaming giant is adding a few recent hit movies inspired by the legendary director. Henson headlines Tyler Perry's latest Netflix original movie, 'Straw.' Described as a 'hybrid docu-concert' movie, the film also includes rare, unseen performances from concert halls of Led Zeppelin's nascent tours. Per Netflix, the documentary 'delves into the psyche of billionaire OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush and explores his relentless quest to bring oceanic exploration to the masses — at any cost. Through exclusive access to whistleblower testimony, audio recordings and footage from the company's early days, the film provides an unprecedented look at the technical challenges, moral dilemmas and poor decisions that culminated in the catastrophic expedition.'David Attenborough draws on 'a lifetime of experience to reveal Earth's most spectacular underwater habitats, showing that we're in the greatest age of Ocean discovery and highlighting its vital importance,' reads Disney+'s synopsis for Attenborough's latest nature documentary. 'While exposing the Ocean's biggest challenges, Attenborough's message is one of hope: the opportunity for marine life recovery on an unprecedented scale is within reach.'Emmy-winning director Cristina Costantini is behind the original Disney+ Sally Ride documentary 'Sally.' Revealing the romance and sacrifices of their 27 years together, Sally's life partner, Tam O'Shaughnessy, tells the full story of this complicated and iconic astronaut for the first time.'Julianne Moore already has one summer streaming hit courtesy of Netflix's limited series 'Sirens.' Can she deliver a second for Apple TV+? Moore stars opposite Sydney Sweeney and Domhnall Gleeson in the thriller 'Echo Valley' from director Michael Pearce and writer Brad Ingelsby (creator of 'Mare of Easttown').
