Danilo fit and firing for Athens return leg after emerging unscathed from 'scary' tackle

It would once have been described as a 'welcome to the game' tackle. Moments after being one of seven Rangers players introduced by Russell Martin on the hour mark, Danilo crashed to the turf and, for a few seconds, Ibrox fell silent. The challenge from behind by Middlesbrough defender Dael Fry in Saturday's 2-2 friendly draw was woeful. Perhaps it would have been a red card in a competitive game. As referee John Beaton dutifully produced a yellow, Nico Raskin made his feelings known to the visiting defender and he was not alone. Since joining Rangers from Feyenoord in 2023, Brazilian striker Danilo has not had his troubles to seek. He missed a couple of months with a broken cheekbone. Then came two serious knee injuries in successive years. As he lay stricken on the turf, you feared he'd been dealt another cruel hand. The sight of him not only returning to his feet but to the action was greeted as warmly as the goal he claimed with a cute header to halve Boro's lead within four minutes of taking the field. 'It was scary,' recalled the man from Sao Paulo. 'Thank God nothing happened. I knew I would have to come through a challenge. I told him: 'It's a friendly game'. If it was a real game he would have got a red card straight away.' While the risk of injury remains an occupational hazard, Danilo felt better placed to avoid one in that instance than at any time since moving to Glasgow. Having fallen out of sight so often, he was in danger of being out of mind as a wind of change swept through the club. He resolved to spent much of the summer recess toughening up. The upshot was that he returned for pre-season training under Martin feeling more robust than before. 'My coaches in Brazil helped me a lot,' he said. 'After the last game, before I went on vacation, I was already talking with some people to help me. I knew new staff would come in, so I wanted to be in my best shape. I also wanted to show my qualities so I'm ready if I start or I'm on the bench. I want to focus on the positive things. 'I tried to become stronger. The way they play (in the Scottish Premiership), there are a lot of duels. My head is in a great place and the manager is trying to talk to me a lot. 'Right now, I feel physically better. Hopefully I stay fit and try to help the team as much as I can.' Having come through pre-season just about unscathed, a place in the starting 11 which faced Panathinaikos last week was the vote of confidence he craved. With Martin experimenting for the first hour against the Teesiders, the fact Danilo was held in reserve pointed towards another start in Athens on Wednesday. Having wiped the slate clean, the new manager evidently likes what he sees in the forward. The feeling is mutual. 'The style of play just suits me a lot,' said the 26-year-old. 'I like to try and help the team, help the link-up, trying to be there and build-up from the back. 'Everyone is trying to be connected together. It's good.' On Saturday, Martin took some time to like what he was seeing. Cyriel Dessers was off it, Jefte did little to change the pattern of the match and Nedim Bajrami seemed to be everywhere the ball had just been. They can all expect to start on the bench in Athens. Boro claimed an early goal through Neto Borges and Fry added a second after the turnaround, with Martin then ringing the changes. His side were much the better for it. Danilo's cute header came from fellow sub Max Aarons' cross. Findlay Curtis, who was also introduced after an hour, completed a dream week by bundling home a late leveller. Martin viewed the comeback from a seat in the main stand after crossing the line in a verbal exchange with referee Beaton at the break. How the officials missed a clear handball by Luke Ayling, only they could explain. Any further punishment for the Rangers manager seems highly unlikely. What can be taken for read as Athens comes into view ahead of the start of the domestic season is the identity of his first-choice striker. 'I was really pleased with my goal,' said Danilo. 'It's a good feeling, especially for Wednesday. 'If I just have one chance or two then I have to be sharp for what is coming.'

Wests Tigers player under fire as vision emerges of tackle that injured Titans gun

Angry NRL fans have called for Wests Tigers forward Alex Twal to be suspended over a 'third man in' tackle that resulted in an injury to Titans star Tino Fa'asuamaleaui. The Gold Coast captain had to come from the field in the first half of his side's heartbreaking 21-20 loss to the Tigers, who snatched victory with a last-minute Adam Doueihi field goal. The loss piles more pressure on Titans coach Des Hasler, who is staring down the barrel of the first wooden spoon of his career, with Gold Coast rooted to the bottom of the ladder with just seven games left in the season. The situation is even more grim after Gold Coast's captain was forced from the field with a knee injury in the first half, following a controversial incident that left some fans fuming. Fa'asuamaleaui was wrapped up in a tackle from Tigers duo Doueihi and Terrell May just metres away from the opposition tryline when Twal came in as the third man and tackled the Titans skipper around the legs. The initial contact from the Tigers forward was around the waist but the force of the tackle caused Tino's knee to twist awkwardly and he was in obvious discomfort right away. Tino initially tried to play on but was ultimately subbed off a short time later. Despite remaining active on the sidelines after he came off, the Gold Coast skipper took no further part in the game and is set for scans to determine the severity of the knee injury. Fortunately, it was the opposite knee to the one Tino had to have operated on after suffering a season-ending ACL injury last season. But the incident sparked fresh backlash around the rugby league world as more fans call for a referee crackdown on third man in or cannonball tackles that target an opposition player's legs. RELATED: Craig Bellamy flags further absence for Storm star Cameron Munster Latrell moment says it all as Souths cop another season-ending blow Fresh calls for NRL to crack down on 'third man in' tackles Andrew Johns fumed about one from North Queensland's Karl Lawton that resulted in an injury to Roosters forward Siua Wong last month. "It was a cheap shot," Johns said at the time. "This isn't a shot at the Cowboys or Karl Lawton, because everyone does it and everyone trains to do it. Every club does it... I absolutely hate it. This has got to stop." Just like the Lawton incident last month, Twal was not penalised for the tackle on Tino after the Bunker ruled that the contact with his shoulder was above the Gold Coast forward's knee. But it doesn't make the tackle much less dangerous or reduce the risk of injury to the ball-carrier. And many fans suggested Twal should be suspended for the incident amid fresh calls for the NRL to crack down on third man in tackles. How was the tackler not sent off 😡...it's a cowards @NRL need to suspend player's who do do 10 weeks plus — Pete Hill (@MrQLD) July 20, 2025 That's textbook of why that sht was banned. Give him 6 weeks for that. — NjR. (@njr2727) July 20, 2025 Hasler refused to weigh in on the incident after the game or blame his side's latest defeat 'entirely' on the officials after admitting the Titans played "dumb" footy to surrender a 20-16 lead with four minutes remaining. "It's really disappointing that in the second half we fumble, we bumble, we miss tackles, we throw balls over the sideline, we get carried over the sideline and we complete 9 from 15 sets," the former premiership-winning coach said. "I'm really disappointed in that performance. It was really dumb. We didn't need luck. There was a scrum penalty and three knock-ons that the referee missed, but I'm not going to blame the loss entirely on the referee's performance. We didn't help ourselves." The under-fire coach's frustrations with his players was evident in an epic post-match spray in the change rooms that was captured on camera and quickly circulated online. Hasler looked furious in the footage and could be seen calling back players from the showers to continue delivering what one can only imagine was an almighty serve from the veteran coach. Panthers player facing suspension over illegal act that injured Parramatta rival

Panthers centre Izack Tago is likely to attract scrutiny from the NRL match review committee, and could be facing suspension for an ugly tackle on Parramatta player Kitione Kautoga on Sunday. Kautoga limped from the field and was seen with his foot in an ice bucket in the second half, after he appeared to cop an illegal hip-drop tackle from Tago. Tago dragged down Kautoga from behind and swivelled so that his body came down on top of the Eels forward's legs. It appeared a textbook example of a hip-drop tackle, but the on-field referee and Bunker official completely missed it. Tago appeared extremely lucky not to be sin-binned, but it's unlikely he'll be spared by the match review committee on Monday. Parramatta coach Jason Ryles revealed after the game that Kautoga is likely to miss multiple weeks with a syndesmosis injury. "It got him," Ryles said of the tackle. "He'll probably miss a couple of weeks now. He's in a moon-boot so we'll just manage it as like we have with the other syndesmosis injuries we've had this year." When asked if he was frustrated the tackle went unpunished on the field, Ryles replied: "Very." Kitione Kautoga will go for scans on a left ankle injury - contact mechanism with weight of tackler coming down on legs causing external rotation of footVideo brings concern for syndesmosis injury - will be lucky to escape with low grade damage considering force involved. — NRL PHYSIO (@nrlphysio) July 13, 2025 The fact Tago was allowed to stay on the field was compounded when he scored in the 54th minute. The try put the Panthers up 18-10 in the second half, and they went on to win 32-10. Kautago has been a shining light for the Eels in a disappointing 2025 season, and scored a scything try in the 14th minute. He looked a picture of frustration as he sat on the sidelines with his foot heavily iced and his hood over his head. "Tago on Kautoga, about as textbook as a hip drop can be," one person wrote on social media. "No penalty/sin bin and Parra lose a player to injury." It wasn't the only contentious moment that left Parramatta fans fuming. Josh Addo-Carr was pinged for an illegal play-the-ball when he failed to use his foot correctly, and it led to the Panthers getting possession and scoring soon after. Eels fans were left crying foul when Matt Eisenhuth produced a similar play-the-ball in the lead-up to another Panthers try, but the officials failed to spot it. One person commented: "So we get pulled up for an incorrect play the ball, but Penrith are allowed just to lift their foot as high as they want." It's play on for the Panthers! One of the reasons why they keep winning games, they do this every game and get fast play the balls! But hey play on I guess! #NRLEelsPanthers #NRL — Abbz83 (@abbz83) July 13, 2025 Are we surprised that a panther didn't play the ball correctly. They were the worst for it and rarely get called for it #NRLEelsPanthers — gemma rogers (@gemma92rogers) July 13, 2025 RELATED: Nicho Hynes reveals gesture for Cameron Munster after tragedy NRL club urged to make immediate move to sign Cameron Smith The win for the Panthers continued their stunning resurgence, with Ivan Cleary's side sitting sixth on the ladder after 19 rounds. They were perilously close to sitting last on the ladder less than two months ago. "We lost five in a row and we just won five in a row, so it's taken a long time to get the ledger back," said coach Cleary. "We'll finish where we deserve. We're still trying to build, we need to play better than what we did today. We did enough."

Kangaroos, Saints rucks face AFL bans over high contact

Alastair Clarkson concedes North Melbourne ruckman Tristan Xerri is at the mercy of the AFL match review officer after his high hit knocked out Melbourne's Tom Sparrow. Xerri and St Kilda debutant Max Heath, who caught Sydney's Tom McCartin high with an attempted spoil, face multiple weeks on the sidelines after forcing opponents out of matches. Carlton's Adam Cerra is also facing a possible suspension in a test case for the league, referred to the tribunal over his latest case of careless umpire contact. Xerri's attempted tackle on Sparrow caught his opponent high in the immediate follow-up play after a boundary throw-in during Melbourne's 36-point win on Sunday. Tom Sparrow came from the ground following this incident involving Tristan Xerri.#AFLDeesNorth — AFL (@AFL) July 13, 2025 Sparrow was knocked out and eventually taken off on a stretcher, and has been put in concussion protocols. Kangaroos coach Clarkson referenced a separate incident, in which North's Luke Davies-Uniacke was concussed by Western Bulldogs midfielder Ed Richards one week earlier when asked post-match about Xerri's contact. "We're at (the AFL's) discretion. They'll look at every concussion," Clarkson said. "But they looked at LDU's concussion last week and said no case to answer, and that's a raised forearm to the scone. "This is just a tackle ... he's got very, very little time to prepare for the tackle. "That will be up to the AFL to work out, but unfortunately in the game there's going to be collisions, especially around stoppage and especially around the big rucks." Tom McCartin came from the ground after this incident involving Max Heath.#AFLSaintsSwans — AFL (@AFL) July 13, 2025 On debut, St Kilda's Heath forced McCartin out of the Swans' nail-biting five-point win on Sunday with a spoiling attempt that caught his opponent high. It will likely mean the 204cm ruckman has to wait longer than one week to play his second senior game.

Roosters star Sam Walker learns fate for ugly tackle that left David Klemmer grimacing in pain

Roosters halfback Sam Walker can count his lucky stars after he avoided being charged for an ugly tackle that injured Dragons prop David Klemmer. In the 26th minute on Saturday, with the Dragons leading 18-12, the veteran forward took a hit-up before being tackled by two Roosters players. Then for whatever reason Walker, the third man in, cannoned into his legs below the knee. 'He has gone down awkwardly there and Walker went low and Klemmer was wincing before he got to the ground,' Dan Ginnane said. 'He might be in more trouble than just giving away a penalty, he might get 10 in the bin.' Referee Grant Atkins wasted no time in sending Walker for 10 minutes as Klemmer hobbled off. 'Third man in, it's low, it's avoidable, there is force and high risk of injury, 10 in the bin,' Atkins said. You can watch the ugly incident in the player at the top of the page. Dan Ginnane added: 'Sam Walker in his return game has been sent to the sin bin. He will get 10 minutes to think about that.' And many felt Walker, who was making his return from injury, was set for another stint on the sidelines for his ugly tackle. But on Sunday, as the NRL sent around the charge sheet for Saturday's games, Walker was a notable omission. And safe to say NRL fans were largely stunned. 'What a rort,' one fan wrote on X in response to the news that Walker had avoided suspension. 'You're kidding?! That's a couple of weeks if I've ever seen it,' another added. While a third said: 'What …??? The NRL and judiciary are a joke.'
