Mohammed Siraj is like a lion, important to manage his workload: Assistant coach
India's assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate on Thursday lauded Mohammed Siraj's unwavering commitment and lion-hearted spirit, underscoring the need to carefully manage the pacer's workload to ensure he remains in peak condition. Siraj, who has been a mainstay in India's red-ball set-up, has toiled tirelessly through three consecutive Tests in the ongoing series. While his wicket tally may not always reflect his effort, ten Doeschate believes Siraj's presence brings an edge and energy to the Indian bowling attack that is hard to take for granted how lucky we are to have someone like that," said ten Doeschate. "I know he doesn't always get the returns you might expect from a fast bowler, but in terms of heart, he's like a lion. Every time he has the ball in hand, you get the sense that something is about to happen."Since the start of 2023, Siraj has played in 24 of India's 27 Test matches - more than any other Indian fast bowler. He has bowled 569.4 overs in this period, the highest among Indians and only behind Australia's Pat Cummins (721.2) and Mitchell Starc (665.1) globally. The figures are a testament to his durability, but they also highlight the physical demands placed on his shoulders. "He's not someone who's ever going to shy away from a workload, which makes it all the more important for us to manage it carefully," added ten Doeschate. "We've got to make sure he's fit enough to give his best, and that might mean pulling him back even when he's willing to do more."India are yet to finalise their bowling combination for the fifth and final Test in Manchester. Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh was in contention for a place in the XI, but an injury sustained during training has complicated matters. "We'll take a call on the combination closer to the match," ten Doeschate said. "Particularly with the Arshdeep situation - he was in the frame, but now we'll have to see how things unfold."The assistant coach also drew parallels between Siraj's unflinching work ethic and that of Ben Stokes, who bowled a heroic spell for England on the final day at Lord's earlier in the series."Siraj is always ready to step up and bowl that extra over, like Stokes did. You don't often come across players with that kind of attitude - and sometimes it's on us, the management, to say 'that's enough', even when he's raring to go."Mohammed Siraj may not always headline the scorecard, but for India, he remains the lion-hearted engine of their bowling attack - relentless, selfless, and fiercely committed. The challenge now is to protect that heart without dimming its fire.- EndsTune InYou May Also Like

Series is on line, so there will be a leaning towards playing Bumrah: Ryan ten Doeschate
Beckenham: India's assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate on Thursday said the team is "leaning towards" playing lead pacer Jasprit Bumrah in the fourth Test in Manchester as the visitors look to pull themselves back on level terms in the five-match series against England. India went down by 22 runs in the third Test at Lord's, failing to chase 193 after dominating for a better part of the game to go 1-2 behind in the marquee rubber. I think it's pretty obvious the series is on the line now in Manchester, so there will be a leaning towards playing him," ten Doeschate said. With two more matches still left in the series, the peerless fast bowler's availability at Old Trafford will depend on multiple factors. Live Events "But again, we've got to look at all the factors. How many days of cricket are we going to get up there? What do we feel is our best chance of winning that game? And then how that fits in together with the Oval and looking at the last two games holistically as part of the series," ten Doeschate said. On Thursday, the Indian team had a training session at the County Ground in Beckenham before leaving for Manchester for the penultimate game of the five-match series. Bumrah is currently the second-highest wicket-taker in the series, with 12 scalps in four innings at an average of 28.09. Soon after India lost the third Test, skipper Shubman Gill simply said "you'll get to know soon" when asked about Bumrah's participation in Manchester. After India's defeat at Lord's, former players like Anil Kumble urged the team management to push Bumrah to play the final two Tests to save the series.

India assessing major selection calls for Manchester Test ICC World Test Championship
With an extended gap before the fourth Test against England, India have significant decisions to make with respect to their playing XI for the Old Trafford outing. Trailing 2-1 in the five-Test series, having come out second best in a close encounter at Lord's, the visitors were dealt an injury blow as wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant sustained an injury to his index finger. India's assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate is hopeful that the 27-year-old can make the recovery and feature in the fourth Test. 'He [Pant] will bat in Manchester before the Test. Look, I don't think you're going to keep Rishabh out of the Test no matter what,' ten Doeschate told reporters on Thursday. 'He batted with quite a lot of pain in the third Test and it's only going to get easier and easier on his finger. 'And 'keeping is obviously the last part of the process to make sure that he can 'keep. We don't want to go through that again where we have to replace the 'keeper halfway through the innings." Having picked up the injury during England's first innings at Lord's, Pant batted in both innings but was unable to keep the wickets. He was replaced by Dhruv Jurel behind the stumps. "Jurel's in the equation, but I mean obviously if Rishabh's fit, he plays the next Test and does both," said ten Doeschate. Another important call with regards to selection remains that of the No.1 Test bowler Jasprit Bumrah. India had rested Bumrah for the second Test in Edgbaston for managing his workload, and the pacer's availability for the Manchester Test is unclear. "No, we'll make that call [on Bumrah] in Manchester still," ten Doeschate said. "We know we have got him for one of the last two Tests. It's pretty obvious that the series is on the line now in Manchester so there will be a leaning towards playing him.' With 12 wickets from two Tests, Bumrah is India's second-best wicket-taker in the ongoing series. In front of him in the tally is Mohammed Siraj, who has 13 scalps from his three outings. With 109 overs under his belt in the ongoing ICC World Test Championship series, ten Doeschate added that India are assessing Siraj's workload ahead of the next Test. 'I think we take for granted how lucky we are to have someone like that," he said. 'I know he doesn't always have the returns that you expect from a fast bowler but in terms of heart, he's like a lion. 'What he brings to this bowling attack when he does have the ball in his hand, it always feels like something is going to happen. 'He's not someone to shy away from his workload, so it makes it even more important for us to manage his workload and make sure that he is fit to give his best.' The fourth Test between India and England begins on July 23 at Old Trafford, Manchester. ICC World Test ChampionshipICC World Test Championship, 2025/27NewsIndia

Rishabh Pant Doubtful As Wicketkeeper For 4th India-England Test: Report
Pant suffered a finger injury on Day 1 of the third India-England Test at Lord's, and he didn't keep the wickets after 34 overs of England's first innings. Rishabh Pant suffered a finger injury on Day 1 of the third India-England Test, which was played from July 10 to 14 at Lord's, and as a result, he didn't keep the wickets after 34 overs of England's first innings. In his absence, Dhruv Jurel came in as substitute keeper and completed the duties in both innings. However, despite the finger injury, Pant came out to bat for India in both innings and scored 74 and 9 runs, respectively. The injury in the Lord's Test raised question marks over Pant's participation in the fourth India-England Test, which is set to take place in Manchester from July 23 to 24. But according to India's assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate, Pant will play in Manchester, but his availability for wicketkeeping duties is yet to be confirmed. Speaking to reporters in Manchester after India's first practice session on Thursday, Doeschate said that Pant will bat before the match, but the team management is being cautious with his finger injury. 'He will bat in Manchester before the Test. I don't think you're going to keep Rishabh out of the Test no matter what. He batted with quite a lot of pain in the third Test, and it's only going to get easier on his finger," ten Doeschate said. 'Keeping is the last part of the process. We need to make sure that he can keep—we don't want to go through that again where we have to replace the keeper halfway through an inning," he added. Pant is a valuable member of India's Test side, and the Indian team management team is giving him as much time as possible to ensure he is fully fit. 'But he rested today, was trying to give the finger as long as possible, and hopefully, he's good to go in Manchester in the first session. He is in the equation, but I mean if he's fit, he plays the next Test and does both," ten Doeschate added. If Pant fails to feature as wicketkeeper-batter, then Jurel will play in the fourth Test, and in that case, one out of Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy, or Karun Nair will have to make way for him in the playing XI. view comments First Published: July 17, 2025, 19:47 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. IND vs ENG: 'I am very sure two spinners will play' - India assistant coach reveals playing XI secrets ahead of 2nd Test
Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav (Photo by) in Birmingham: As India prepare for a crucial clash in the second Test against England at Edgbaston, assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate offered rare insights into the team's selection plans. Following a disappointing defeat at Headingley, India trail 0-1 in the five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series, and changes could be on the cards. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'I am very sure two spinners will play,' ten Doeschate told reporters on Monday. 'Which ones, we are not sure yet. All three are bowling nicely. Washi (Washington Sundar) is batting really well too.' This suggests a likely return for India's traditional two-spinner formula, possibly a mix of experience and all-round depth. Washington Sundar's ability with the bat could tilt the balance in his favour, especially on a pitch expected to aid turn as the match progresses. Jasprit Bumrah's availability, however, remains a bigger question. Though fully fit, the pace ace might be rested as part of India's long-term workload management strategy. 'Jasprit Bumrah is ready to play, we will take that call at the last moment,' ten Doeschate confirmed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Poll What is your prediction for the outcome of the 2nd Test?
