Celebrating Mandela Day 2025: join Ladles of Love in feeding the future
Danny Diliberto, Founder/CEO, Ladles of Love, and Hans Bruechle making final preparations for the upcoming Mandela Day event at the DHL Stadium. Image: Armand Hough / Independent Newspapers As South Africa prepares to celebrate Nelson Mandela's legacy on 18 July 2025, Ladles of Love has launched its latest Mandela Day campaign, urging people around the world to "Make Every Day a Mandela Day and Feed the Future'. This year, the NPO has partnered with acclaimed Australian street artist Hans Bruechle—also known as Handbrake—to deliver an inspiring and interactive art installation that highlights community spirit and support for early childhood development (ECD). Bruechle, a muralist known for his bold black outlines, tattoo-style aesthetic and vibrant cartoon energy, has worked with major global brands such as Porsche, Mercedes, Tesla, Harley Davidson, and Jack Daniel's. Now, he brings his unique style to Cape Town for a meaningful purpose. For the Mandela Day 2025 project, Hans will create a single cohesive mural design spread across 42 separate canvases—generously donated by Primeart. Once assembled, the full image will depict a detailed garden of South African native flowers, plants, and animals, surrounding a message of hope and love. At the Ladles of Love event on July 18th volunteers will have the opportunity to contribute to each canvas with either a colourful finger print or a personally written message of hope and support for the children of the ECDs. Each volunteer will be able to grab a paint marker and write a personal message on the painted canvases, becoming an integral part of the overall artwork. Once the event concludes, each of the canvases will be distributed to various ECD centres around Cape Town. The idea is to brighten the walls of these centres and to leave children with tangible, daily reminders that they are supported by a wider community. Video Player is loading. The initiative focuses on tackling child food poverty in South Africa through volunteerism and purpose-driven partnerships. Founder and CEO Danny Diliberto explained the mission: 'At Ladles of Love, we believe that every plate of healthy food has the power to change a life. Mandela Day reminds us that we all have the ability to uplift our communities through volunteerism. This year, we're inviting people to buy tickets and through acts of kindness, make items that support early childhood development giving small children hope and a healthy start in life.' Bruechle added: 'I feel very lucky to be able to contribute to such a fantastic organisation. Having visited a few of the ECDs now I've seen firsthand just what a wonderful impact Ladles of Love has on these communities, and just how much further we have to go. The fact that I can use my skill set to hopefully help in some way puts a huge smile on my face. The team have been extremely welcoming to me and I can tell that they all genuinely believe in what they're doing. What could be better?' He said he had many 'aims' with this outreach: 'I wanted to create something colourful and local for the children in the ECDs to enjoy but I also wanted to work in a collaborative element to the work so that the generous volunteers at the event could take some ownership of it too. 'By including space for volunteers to write a heartfelt message of support or add their fingerprint not only are they adding to the overall artwork but hopefully it reminds the kids who see it that there are people out there who do care. Real people who want a better country and a better world and who hope for a bright future for every child. It might inspire them. 'Coming from Australia I didn't know the significance of Mandela Day until I got here but I think the collaborative nature of the mural fits right in with the notion of Ubuntu. The overall painting can only be seen when all of the canvases are together - just like a community. Each of us is our own canvas, but it's when we're together that the true meaning emerges.'

Trump's $5 million ‘gold card' visa program set to launch: Here's everything you need to know about it
In a significant shift in U.S. immigration policy, President Donald Trump has announced the imminent launch of the 'gold card' visa program. It offers foreign nationals a pathway to permanent residency and eventual citizenship in exchange for a $5 million investment. The announcement was made on May 21 at Axios's 'Building the Future' event in Washington DC. Also Read: Trump plans to offer 'gold cards' for $5 million path to citizenship, replacing investor visas Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick revealed that a website called ' will go up in about a week with further details and those interested in the program can start registering. What is the 'gold card' visa programme? The gold card visa is a new initiative to attract affluent individuals to invest in the U.S. economy. In return for a $5 million investment, applicants will receive permanent residency rights akin to those granted by a green card and a streamlined route to U.S. citizenship. This programme is set to replace the EB-5 investor visa scheme, which requires a lower investment threshold and mandates job creation. When and how can one apply? Prospective applicants can register their interest and access detailed information about the application process on ' The initiative has garnered attention, with reports indicating that some cards have been sold in the Middle East, signalling strong early interest. Is the 'gold card' visa programme legal? The Trump administration projects that the 'gold card' programme could generate substantial revenue, potentially aiding in reducing the national debt, which currently exceeds $36 trillion. However, the program's legality has been a topic of debate. Some lawmakers argue that such a significant change in immigration policy requires Congressional approval. What about the EB-5 program? The EB-5 program was created by the U.S. Congress in 1990 to stimulate the U.S. economy through job creation and capital investment by foreign investors. Under this programme, a foreign investor can apply for a Green Card if he or she invests in a U.S. commercial enterprise and creates 10 permanent full-time jobs for U.S. workers. Rand Paul, a Republican Senator from Kentucky, expressed his concern in dismantling the previous visa framework by saying, 'I don't think it should replace the EB-5 because I think there are a lot of people who come to this country with the EB-5 level that might not come at the $5 million level.' However, it is unlikely that the EB-5 programme can be abolished, even by a presidential order. President Joe Biden signed the EB-5 Reform and Integrity Act in 2022, which reauthorised the programme until 2027. The bill also included a provision to protect EB-5 investors who have invested, or plan to invest, before September 2026 in the event of a future lapse in the EB-5 RC programme. Since the immigration and nationality laws are protected under the U.S. constitution, a new legislation must be passed through Congress to terminate the EB-5 programme.

Egypt developing sustainable strategies for African investment, trade integration: GAFI Head
Egypt's government is currently developing sustainable strategies to facilitate investment flows and trade among African nations, aiming to create integrated partnerships with key players on the continent, including Morocco, to boost intra-African investment and trade, according to Hossam Heiba, CEO of the General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI). Heiba made these remarks during his participation in the 'Connecting Markets to Build the Future' conference, organised by Attijariwafa Bank to strategise on investment and trade integration among African countries. He outlined the Egyptian government's plan to continue improving the investment environment. Key to this is the anticipated launch of the first version of a unified electronic licensing platform within days. This platform will connect entities responsible for issuing necessary approvals for investor license applications, consolidating the point of contact for investors and simplifying licensing procedures. The conference was attended by Hala El-Said, Advisor to the President for Economic Development; Mouawia Essekelli, Managing Director of Attijariwafa Bank Egypt; Ismail Douiri, Co-CEO of Attijariwafa Bank Group; Hazem Enan, Vice Chairman of the Industrial Development Authority; Hani Berzi, Chairperson of Edita Food Industries; Moustapha Cissé, Deputy CEO of Senegal's Investment Promotion Agency (APIX-S.A.); and Amedeo Abunaw, Deputy General Manager of Cameroon's Investment Promotion Agency. Abunaw highlighted Cameroon's investment advantages, noting its membership in several economic blocs that facilitate trade and investment with neighbouring countries, such as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). He also pointed out Cameroon's role as a major trade hub in West Africa due to its shared borders with landlocked countries like Chad and the Central African Republic. Abunaw praised Attijariwafa Bank's initiative to establish the 'Africa Development Club' in Egypt, Cameroon, and other African nations, stating such initiatives provide a conducive environment for exchanging views, experiences, investment opportunities, and developments, thereby facilitating investment and trade flows across the continent. Cissé invited the Egyptian business community to explore investment opportunities in Senegal, particularly in food processing and preservation, natural gas production and distribution, digital transformation, tourism, and pharmaceuticals. He noted these sectors require significant investment in Senegal, and Egypt possesses considerable expertise in managing them. Mr Cissé affirmed Senegal's political leadership's desire to attract Egyptian investments and exports, acknowledging Egypt as the first country to recognise Senegal's independence. Consequently, APIX-S.A. plans to hold a Senegalese-Egyptian investment forum in Dakar as soon as possible, in coordination with GAFI, to agree on targeted sectors for investment partnerships. Berzi, Chairperson of Edita Food Industries, commended the role of export councils and foreign trade exhibitions affiliated with the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade in supporting Egyptian businesses looking to export to African countries. He stated that African countries currently account for 15% of Egyptian exports, a figure that can be increased through better studies of consumer preferences in each country, intensified presence of financial institutions guaranteeing exports and investments in Africa, improved infrastructure and logistics connecting the continent's nations, and forming bilateral and multilateral partnerships with local partners in targeted countries to overcome bureaucratic hurdles, government regulations, or challenges related to distribution network efficiency.
