The day the Boston Celtics became the Buffalo Braves, today's Los Angeles Clippers
On July 7, 1978, one of the weirder events in Boston Celtics and NBA history took place. The Celtics became the (then) Buffalo Braves, and the Braves became the Celtics. If you are confused, that is because it is a confusing event -- at least, that is, without the appropriate context to explain what that meant to the teams involved and the league that they played in. It was on this day that the NBA granted the owners of the Celtics and the Braves permission to swap franchises as a potential solution to allow then-Boston owner Irv Levin to move his team to the West Coast without relocating one of the cornerstone franchises of the league. It came about via the suggestion of former league lawyer and future commissioner David Stern, who pitched the concept to Buffalo owner John Y. Brown as a potential solution given Brown's dissatisfaction with his team's situation in upstate New York as well. The unprecedented move was handily supported by the league, who voted 21-1 in favor of the franchise swap (the lone dissenting team has been lost to history), with the two teams trading franchising rights and much of the other club's roster in the process. Strictly speaking, the franchise that won the bulk of Boston's titles from the founding of the organization up through the 1970s then moved to San Diego, California and later, Los Angeles, to become the Clippers. Keep that in mind the next time you want to rib the Los Angeles Lakers about their title accounting since leaving the state of Minnesota.

Jury Foreman Voted to Acquit Karen Read of Murder. Now He Says FBI Should Reopen Investigation
The jury foreman in Karen Read's second murder trial is calling on the FBI to reopen the case in order to "get justice for John O'Keefe" The foreman spoke with The Boston Herald and said there are still "so many holes that need to be filled" in the story Multiple jury members have spoken out calling for a deeper investigation to track down who may have been responsible for O'Keefe's Jan. 2022 deathDays after Karen Read was acquitted of the most serious charges she faced in her second murder trial, the jury foreman is speaking out and calling on the FBI to look into the case and 'get justice for John O'Keefe.' In a new interview with The Boston Herald, the foreman – who does not share his name – told the newspaper that he believes there are still 'so many holes that need to be filled' in the story and says investigators should not stop looking into the case. 'Now that the FBI knows Karen Read is not a suspect, something happened, and multiple jurors feel that way,' the foreman told the Herald. The foreman says he's calling on federal investigators to step in because 'no one local should be involved in the investigation,' given the victim's ties to local police. 'It was lazy police work,' the foreman said about the initial investigation, adding that 'we should start some type of investigation of what went on in that house.' Read, 45, was acquitted last week of killing O'Keefe, her 46-year-old boyfriend, on Jan. 29, 2022, after a high-profile and lengthy second murder trial, PEOPLE previously reported. O'Keefe, a Boston police officer, was found unresponsive in the snow outside the home of then-Boston police officer Brian Albert in Canton, Mass., the night he and others were together out at Albert's house. An autopsy later revealed that O'Keefe had died from blunt force trauma and hypothermia. Read was accused of drunkenly backing into O'Keefe with her SUV and leaving the scene. She was arrested in 2022 but maintained her innocence and instead alleged she was the target of a police cover up, as her defense attorneys alleged that O'Keefe had been attacked by someone at the party with whom he had a long-standing disagreement. The case proved divisive in the local community and made headlines around the world, leading to intense media coverage. The first trial ended in July 2024 when the judge declared a mistrial following five days of deadlocked jury second trial, which ended last week, followed four days of deliberations. Read was found not guilty on charges of second-degree murder, manslaughter while operating under the influence of alcohol and of leaving the scene of bodily injury. She was, however, found guilty of the lesser charge of operating under the influence of alcohol or liquor (OUI) and sentenced after the verdict to one year of probation. Since the final verdicts were read, multiple jury members have since spoken out about the case and called for it to be reopened in order to find who was truly responsible for O'Keefe's death. 'We just need to find justice for John,' the foreman told the Herald on Tuesday. 'and get his mother some peace.' Read the original article on People

Danny Ainge's final Boston Celtics draft class helped pave way to title
While the 2020 NBA Draft was remote in the middle of the pandemic, it ended up being an important night for the Celtics. That was also then-Boston president Danny Ainge's final draft class for the C's as he nailed a couple first-round picks. He then made way for Brad Stevens a few months later. Turns out, those picks were huge for the Celtics to help them win the 2024 NBA title. Back then, the C's selected Aaron Nesmith at No. 14 and Payton Pritchard at No. 26 in the first round. They also traded away the pick that became Desmond Bane, along with taking Yam Madar in the second round. Advertisement But the two draft picks in Nesmith and Pritchard became big hits, especially considering where they were taken. Pritchard enjoyed a breakout 2024-25 season, being named the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year. Notably, he became a key part of the rotation this season as a playoff contributor. Plus, his four-year, $30 million contract is one of the best value deals in the league. Nesmith also showcased how good he can be as he helped the Pacers stun the Knicks in Game 1 of the East Finals. The Vanderbilt product couldn't get consistent playing time on a crowded Celtics roster as he was part of the 2022 NBA Finals run. But Nesmith was also a part in landing Malcolm Brogdon from the Pacers back in the 2022 offseason. While Brogdon only spent one season with the Celtics, also earning Sixth Man of the Year honors, his contract was also important. Brogdon was part of the trade package sent to the Trail Blazers to get Jrue Holiday, who had just been traded from the Bucks. Holiday, of course, was an integral member of the 2024 NBA title run. So, it took a few steps, but the C's benefited as they got to their ultimate goal of Banner No. 18. Nesmith struggled to get playing time in Boston, but he's now a starting piece for the Indiana operation. He's averaging 16.0 points and 6.1 rebounds in 11 playoff games, including shooting 53.8% on his 3-pointers. Nesmith is also an energy guy as that's been evident during this Pacers run to the East Finals and perhaps beyond. Advertisement Pritchard figures to be part of the Celtics for the foreseeable future. He proved last season that he can impact the game on a nightly basis and in a playoff setting. The C's will look to offload salary this summer to cut down on costs, so Pritchard could see his role expand depending on what moves the front office makes this summer. So, Ainge's final draft class ended up helping the Celtics significantly now five years later. Of course, drafting Jaylen Brown then Jayson Tatum in back-to-back years laid the foundation for years to come. But one of his lesser-known draft classes, in a couple solid picks, also helped along the way. More Celtics content Read the original article on MassLive.
