Severe thunderstorm watch issued for Calgary area
Environment Canada called a severe thunderstorm watch in Calgary for Sept. 12, 2021. (File) A severe thunderstorm watch was issued for the City of Calgary area just before noon Sunday. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) posted the alert on its website at 11:47 a.m "Severe thunderstorms are likely to develop along the Foothills this afternoon and evening and will move (through) the southeast,' it said. 'These thunderstorms will be capable of producing damaging hail, heavy rain and strong wind gusts." It added that severe thunderstorms can sometimes produce tornadoes.

Severe thunderstorm watch issued for Ottawa
Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Ottawa, warning conditions are 'favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms' this afternoon and early this evening. The forecast calls for a mix of sun and cloud today with a 40 per cent chance of showers and the risk of a thunderstorm. High 25 C with the humidex making it feel like 28. At 12:40 p.m., a band of heavy rain was moving through Renfrew County near the Ottawa River. Environment Canada says severe thunderstorms could have wind gusts up to 90 km/h and hail up to 2 cm. 'Isolated thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon. These thunderstorms are expected to move south of the area early this evening,' Environment Canada said. 'When thunder roars, go indoors! Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year.' This is the second straight day a severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for Ottawa. Some areas of Ottawa saw a thunderstorm on Wednesday afternoon. Environment Canada's forecast says Ottawa will see partly cloudy conditions tonight with a 40 per cent chance of evening showers. Low 12 C. Friday will see a mix of sun and cloud. High 24 C.

Severe thunderstorm watch issued for large swath of Wisconsin
A weak cold front moving across Wisconsin may bring severe thunderstorms to parts of central and southern Wisconsin on Sunday, June 29. The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch for 31 counties. The watch is in effect until 9 p.m. and covers counties spanning from Green Bay down to far southwest Wisconsin. Milwaukee County is not currently affected. Ben Miller, a meteorologist at NWS in Sullivan, said there is a risk of 1-1.5 inches of rain, hail and gusty winds of 50-60 miles per hour. Severe thunderstorm threat for Northeast has 60 million people on alert
Parts of the Northeast are under the threat of severe thunderstorms on Thursday, with 60 million people on alert for severe weather. A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect up and down the I-95 corridor through 9 p.m. Thursday for cities including Richmond, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York City. The main threat with these storms will be widespread damaging wind gusts to 75 mph. Hail and tornadoes are also possible. A "large and extremely dangerous" tornado was located over Landenberg in southeastern Pennsylvania around 5 p.m. Thursday, the National Weather Service said. In New York City, a teenager was struck by lightning in Central Park Thursday afternoon, police said. The teen is alert and conscious, police said. More than 500,000 customers across the Mid-Atlantic were without power as of Thursday evening, primarily in Virginia, Pennsylvania and Maryland, according to Nearly 600 flights have been canceled nationwide on Thursday, according to FlightAware, with New York's LaGuardia Airport the most impacted. Several parts of central, southern Sask. under severe thunderstorm watch
As of 2 p.m., several areas in central and southern Saskatchewan were under a severe thunderstorm watch or warning. (Photo source: Environment and Climate Change Canada) A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for several parts of central and southern Saskatchewan on Saturday, including Moose Jaw and Saskatoon. According to an alert from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms which may produce strong wind gusts, heavy rain, and damaging hail. The weather agency advises that some thunderstorms may become severe and advises people to go indoors if they hear thunder. Wind gusts up to 100 km/h and toonie-sized hail may be possible threats with these storms, ECCC said. ECCC continues to place more areas under the watch as the thunderstorm moves across the province. Some areas have also been issued a severe thunderstorm warning. Several parts of southwestern Saskatchewan were also under a severe thunderstorm watch or warning on Friday.
