A joyous family celebration turned into a harrowing tragedy over the weekend when a boat capsized during a sudden storm on Lake Tahoe, leaving eight people dead and two others hospitalized. The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office confirmed that the group had gathered for a 71st birthday celebration for Paula Bozinovich. The department identified the deceased as Bozinovich, 71, and her husband, Terry Pickles, 73, both of Redwood City, California; their son, Joshua Antony Pickles, 37, a San Francisco resident and DoorDash executive; and Peter Bayes, 72, of Lincoln, California, a close family relative. Also killed were four family friends: Timothy O'Leary, 71, of Auburn, California; Theresa Giullari, 66, and James Guck, 69, both of Honeoye, New York; and Stephen Lindsay, 63, of Springwater, New York. "These individuals were part of a closely connected family group enjoying a birthday gathering on the lake," the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office said in a June 24 statement. "We extend our deepest heartfelt condolences to the families of those who were lost and all those who have been affected by this tragic event." According to the U.S. Coast Guard, winds reached 30 knots with swells as high as eight feet. The boat capsized just before 3 p.m., tossing all ten occupants into the frigid waters of Lake Tahoe. Two unidentified individuals survived the accident. Both were wearing life jackets when they were rescued and transported to a local hospital, the department said. "The most common mistake boaters make is not being aware of the forecasted weather," BM1 Justin Smith, executive petty officer of Coast Guard Station Lake Tahoe, said in a statement to Fox News Digital. "Life jackets being worn continue to be the primary survivability factor." Doordash Executive Among Victims In Lake Tahoe Boating Disaster Emergency response teams from multiple jurisdictions, including North Tahoe Fire, California State Parks, Washoe County Sheriff's Office, and the United States Coast Guard, mounted a massive search-and-rescue operation. In the wake of the tragedy, officials reiterated the importance of weather awareness, life jacket use and float plans. "Weather in the Tahoe Basin can be unpredictable and change quickly," warned Smith. "Mariners should be hesitant to operate in conditions where wind advisories or small craft advisories have been issued." Six bodies were recovered on the day of the incident. The remaining two were found in the days that followed, with the final recovery made on Monday afternoon. "The success of the search and recovery operations would not have been nearly as efficient without the assistance of our partner agencies," the sheriff's office said. Josh Pickles' wife had stayed at home taking care of their seven-month-old daughter, Sam Singer, a family spokesperson, told the outlet. 4 dead including pregnant mother, 5-year-old son in Chicago fire on West Side investigated as arson
Four people, including three members of a family, died in a fire in Chicago's Austin neighborhood early Thursday morning. The fourth victim was found on Friday. Family identified two of the victims as 32-year-old Regina Henry and her 5-year-old son Jacian. The family member said Regina Henry was three months pregnant at the time of her death. A 76-year-old man also died in the fire, but his name has not yet been shared. A fourth body was found Friday after firefighters were able to search a part of the rubble that was previously unreachable on Thursday. Family identified that person as Destiny Henry, Regina Henry's 28-year-old sister. The fire started just before 2 a.m. Thursday in the 5200 block of West North Avenue and was quickly upgraded to a 2-11 alarm. The blaze was eventually upgraded to a 3-11 alarm, calling approximately 140 firefighters to the scene. Firefighters used at least eight ladders to bring residents to safety from the flames. At least five people were pulled from the burning building's windows, and others escaped by the stairs or jumped from the building. Latyra Goodman said her cousin Destiny went back into the burning apartment building to get her 4-year-old son Kyle, not knowing someone else had already dropped the child out of a window to save him from the fire consuming their third-floor apartment. "If my cousin knew her son was already out of the window, she would have been here right now," Goodman said. "She takes care of her son," said her other cousin Andrea Boyd. "She loves her son, and you know, he's fighting." Boyd said Kyle Henry remains hospitalized on oxygen with a head injury. "We just ask you all to keep the family in your prayers," she said. Brad Cummings, 76, also died in the fire, Alderwoman Emma Mitts said. He was the editor of the Austin-based The Voice newspaper. "Know him very well, actually I knew him before I became alderman, probably about 50 years," she said. Mitts said Cummings' publication has been a fixture in the community for decades. It celebrated its 40th anniversary this year. "He's so active in the community. I just saw him Monday night and he wanted me to help him with a celebration for one of the Austin residents that was going to retire from the army," Mitts said. "He had been on me all week and he don't give up when he wants something and that's the way he is in advocating for the community." The fire is considered suspicious and an arson investigation continues at the building on Friday morning. Crews were seen searching the third floor of the building. AFT agents, state fire marshals, and specialized crews sifted through debris, zeroing in on a section of the third floor where family members say Destiny lived with her sister, who also died in the fire. Evidence collected at the scene with the assistance of agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has been turned over to Chicago police detectives for a criminal investigation. Ald. Mitts said the fire was started by someone because of some sort of a domestic incident. Relatives of the Henry family members who died said someone threw Molotov cocktails through the windows before the fire started. Some residents said they heard gunshots before the fire started. Police and other law enforcement are still investigating the cause of the fire. A bullet was seen on the sidewalk outside the apartment building after the fire was gotten under control. More than two dozen people were displaced by the fire.

Emergency response and hospital transport Paramedics rushed the girl from the home, located near NW 90th Street and NW 1st Avenue, to Jackson Memorial Hospital. Chopper 4 video showed the pool with no protective fence around it. Footage showed the child being taken into the hospital while a paramedic held a woman's hand. The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office is now investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities have not said how the child ended up in the pool. Neighbors express shock and grief Neighbors said they were devastated by the news and questioned how the child ended up outside so early in the morning. "It is unfortunate. It is a very sad story," said next-door neighbor P. Moreau. "To me it is very unusual, especially at 3:40. I still cannot imagine that happening at that time when kids should be sleeping." Another neighbor said, "When I saw the yellow tape, my heart dropped. My heart, my stomach is torn." "That is very sad. I mean, it's very sad and for that to happen, then I don't know," a third neighbor said. "They are new to the neighborhood. I mean, they have been here a couple of years. I didn't get the chance to meet them. My heart goes out to them." The home remained taped off with yellow crime scene tape as investigators continued their work.

Daniel Anjorin's parents describe heartbreak after sword killer jailed for life
The father of 14-year-old Daniel Anjorin has spoken of his heartbreak after the schoolboy's killer was jailed for at least 40 years. Marcus Monzo, 37, was sentenced at the Old Bailey after embarking on a 20-minute rampage through Hainault, east London, on April 30 last year. He was also convicted of attacking three more members of the public and two police officers. Speaking outside court after the sentencing on Friday, Dr Ebenezer Anjorin said it marked the end of a 'painful and deeply traumatic chapter' and paid tribute to their son's 'generous spirit'. Reading a statement alongside Daniel's mother, Grace, he said: 'This has been a painful and deeply traumatic chapter in our lives. 'No verdict or sentence can bring back our son Daniel, who we loved so dearly, but we are grateful that justice has been served. 'Daniel was taken from us in a way that no family should ever have to endure. 'His life had so much potential ahead. 'He was gifted academically, was kind and had a generous spirit that touched everyone who knew him. 'We carry that light with us, even in this dark time. 'We want to express our deepest thanks to the police, prosecution team, and all those who worked tirelessly to seek the truth. 'Your dedication has meant more than words can fully convey. 'To everyone who has supported us through this ordeal, friends, family, our church, our workplaces, our children's schools and even strangers, thank you. 'Your love and support has been a lifeline. 'We honour Daniel's memory, not in the shadow of this tragedy but through the love and happiness that he brought to us and all those who knew him. 'Thank you.'
