EXCLUSIVE Diogo Jota mourners turn on Cristiano Ronaldo saying they are 'sad' and 'disappointed' that he didn't go to funeral
In the Portuguese cemetery of Gondomar, where Diogo Jota and his brother were laid to rest today, the smell of flowers is overpowering. Liverpool winger Jota, 28, and his brother Andre Silva, 25, were killed when their Lamborghini crashed in the early hours of Thursday morning in northern Spain. Just 11 days before, Jota married his childhood sweetheart Rute Cardoso, also 28, who is the mother of his two sons Dinis, four, and Duarte, two as well as his baby daughter Mafalda, who is just eight months old. Almost every person who spoke to the Mail told of their anguish at the thought of the brother's parents losing two sons and of Jota's new bride losing the love of her life. But while his distraught family and the whole of Portugal mourned, one notable face was missing - Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal's talismanic striker, was not at the funeral or the wake. This afternoon, furious mourners criticised the Portugal captain for not attending. Liliana Monteito, 44, paid her respects to Jota and his brother at the cemetery after the funeral with her son Paulo, 16. Liliana told MailOnline: 'He's the captain of the team. It's really sad to see all the [players from] Liverpool come here to Portugal but [from] the Portuguese team, only a few players come. I saw many fake videos of him coming here but it didn't happen. 'I feel there was low support from the Portuguese team. It's really, really sad for the family and also for Portugal.' After the funeral, Portugal manager Roberto Martinez said: 'These are really, really sad days, as you can imagine. 'But today we showed we are a large, close family. We are Portugal and it was esssential for us that for Andre Silva and Diogo Jota, we are together and we will always be together. 'Their spirit will be with us forever.' However, Liliana said the fact Ronaldo and other members of the Portugal squad did not come told another story. She said: 'We didn't see a team. Not at all.' Other fans told MailOnline at their sadness that their greatest player had not shown his support in this most tragic hour. Portugal fan Ines Almeida was seen in tears at Diogo Jota and Andre Silva's wake yesterday. Today, she watched the funeral from the road in front of the church. She said she was angry at the Portuguese captain for not showing his face. Porto fan Martim Fonseca, who also stood outside the church, said: 'It's a surprise we didn't see him here. It's sad.' Ines is seen wrapped in the Portuguese flag as she appeared emotional during a public wake for Jota and his brother Andre on Friday Portugal fan Carla Matos was watching the funeral with her son Alfonso and husband Paulo. She said her son was 'disappointed' that Ronaldo wasn't at the funeral. Carla added: 'We are very upset. I'm surprised he didn't come.' Cristiano has been holidaying Majorca, with videos supposedly showing him swimming of the coast of the Meditterranean island, Majorcan newspaper Ultima Hora reported on Friday. It went on to report the Portuguese star had been seen in the upmarket resort of Illetes on Majorca's south-west coastline and the port of Andratx on board his £5.5 million 88-feet long Azimut Grande yacht. Cristiano last holidayed in Majorca with his family three years ago. Liverpool stars Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson and manager Arne Slot travelled to Portugal to pay their respects, while other teammates including Alexis Mac Allister, Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott joined them. Manchester City 's Bernardo Silva and Ruben Dias and Manchester United 's back Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes all Portuguese national team players, were among the footballers who packed into the church this morning - the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar. Portugal internationals Joao Cancelo and Ruben Neves, seen in tears on Friday night before their Club World Cup clash in Orlando, also made it to the church on time along with Portugal manager Roberto Martinez. Thousands lined the streets today to pay tribute to the two brothers from Gondomar, near Porto. When the Liverpool team arrived, they were greeted with applause from the crowd. The Penafiel team, who Jota's brother Andre wore the number 30 shirt for, received a similar welcome. The crowds fell silent at 10am today as the Jota family bore the two brothers' coffins into the parish church. Jota's wife of just 11 days, Rute Cardoso, 28, had to be held up by a friend as she wept and clung onto her husband's casket. Dressed completely in white less than two weeks after their wedding, she clutched a cream-coloured rose as she bravely walked past the crowds into the church. During the service, the bishop of Porto, Manuel Linda spoke directly to Jota's children, who didn't not attend the service. He said: 'Dear Dinis, Mafalda and Duarte, children who are not here. 'Right now you suffer immensely or maybe not because you don't realise it. I will pray a lot for you. 'Those who suffer a lot are your mother and your grandparents. Seeing the remains of a child must be a great torment, but when there are two coffins there are no words. 'But there are feelings. We are here to say that we also suffer a lot. We are here affectionately with you. It's human to cry.' He added: 'Your father married 11 days before this event. If it's hard to see an adult cry, it's harder to see a child. 'I send you a special greeting for your mother and grandparents. I'm with you but Jesus is also with you.' The brothers were buried in Gondomar's cemetery. Their family will hold a seventh day mass to share stories and pray for them on July 9.

Eight killed after hot-air balloon catches fire and crashes in Southern Brazil
Brasilia: At least eight people were killed on Saturday (local time) after a hot-air balloon caught fire mid-air and crashed in a tourist region of southern Brazil, the New York Times (NYT) reported, citing local authorities. The incident occurred in the rural area of Praia Grande, located in the state of Santa Catarina, a region well known for its scenic balloon rides over stunning canyon landscapes. According to the state's military fire brigade, the balloon caught fire in the air and went down shortly after 8 am (local time). Of the 21 people on board, including the pilot, 13 survived the crash and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, as reported by the NYT. Rescue teams, including some 20 firefighters and seven emergency vehicles, were dispatched to the scene to assist with recovery efforts. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, the NYT reported, citing a statement from the Santa Catarina Governor Jorginho Mello. Mello described the event as a tragedy, as per a video posted to his social media. "We are in mourning... It is a tragedy that has happened. We will watch how it unfolds, what happened, why it happened," he stated, as quoted by the NYT. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva expressed his condolences to the victims' families and confirmed that both federal and state agencies are supporting the ongoing rescue and response operations. "I would like to express my solidarity with the families of the victims of the balloon accident that occurred this Saturday morning in Santa Catarina. I would like to place the Federal Government at the disposal of the victims and the state and municipal forces that are working on the rescue and care for the survivors," he stated in a post on X. The accident comes just days after another hot-air balloon mishap in São Paulo state, where one person was killed and 11 injured when a balloon carrying 30 people fell, as reported by the NYT.

Toddler, two, accidentally shoots and kills his mother while playing with his father's loaded gun in Brazil
A two-year-old child accidentally shot his mother dead while playing with his father's gun in front of them on Friday night. Footage of the incident showed the boy grabbing the firearm from a table and fooling around with it before pulling the trigger as his mother turned to look at him. The couple appeared to be so deep in conversation they failed to notice their son had the Glock 9mm pistol in his hands until it was too late. The victim was shot in the chest and arm, and initially seemed to have survived as she stood up to examine her wounds, while the youngster dropped the gun and ran towards her. She then followed the youngster and fell to the ground dying while her desperate husband tried to assist her. The 27-year-old woman has been named and pictured in Brazilian media as Deborah Rodrigues Monteiro. Police have confirmed her husband, who had a license for the weapon, will face manslaughter charges but will remain a free man while the investigation against him continues. It was not immediately clear if he would continue to be able to look after his son or whether the youngster would be taken into local social service care. The incident happened in the small town of Rio Verde De Mato Grosso in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso Do Sul. Local police chief Danielle Felismino confirmed the gunshot victim had been taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead. The weapon she was killed with and ammunition have been seized by detectives. The event was captured on the couple's home camera which looked onto the veranda where the family was relaxing. The autopsy is understood to have taken place yesterday morning although the results have not yet been made public.

Beaming woman says yes to fiancé's proposal on illegal hot air balloon ride...moments before gory tragedy struck
A woman's fairytale proposal aboard a hot air balloon turned into a nightmare after it crashed and killed a pregnant passenger in Capela, Brazil. College student Gabrielle Nascimento, 27, joined her engineer fiancé Tiago Kempinas, 37, for a seven-hour drive from their Rio de Janeiro home to Boituva, a city in São Paulo. They arrived Sunday around 5am and visited a company that offers sightseeing flights over the city - but they expressed doubts over whether the trip would take place due to strong winds, Nascimento told Brazilian news outlet G1. Their group boarded a flight to a place she described as 'clandestine' - and were met by workers inflating two hot air balloons. The couple got inside the basket-looking gondola along with 31 other passengers as the pilot, Fabio Pereira, assured Nascimento that he was monitoring the swirling winds with a flight device. Everything seemed normal as the hot air balloon glided about 328 to 492 feet above ground, before Kempinas presented Nascimento with the engagement ring. However, the euphoric marriage proposal soon ended as the pilot began to lose control. 'I had no idea that my husband would propose to me like that,' Nascimento said. 'It was beautiful, until it turned into a nightmare. It was horrible. I will never get in a balloon again, let alone a plane.' Nascimento recalled watching how the second balloon that flew alongside her group quickly landed because of the strong winds. She could hear Pereira talking into a two-way radio about continuing the flight. 'At that moment, the balloon started going too fast. He then tried to make the first landing in an orange grove,' she said. Nascimento remembered seeing four people being ejected from the basket as it dragged across a rural field before taking flight again. Most of the people, including herself and her fiancé, were able to get out after it landed the second time. Nascimento remembered watching 27-year-old Juliana Pereira, of no relation to the pilot, writhing in pain before she was eventually rescued by paramedics and rushed to an area hospital, where she died. First responders transferred 11 passengers - all of whom suffered minor injuries - to an urgent care facility in Capela do Alto and to Sorocaba Hospital Complex in Sorocaba. 'Everyone was screaming. The girl who unfortunately died was very injured. Apparently, her nose was broken, she was bleeding and her jaw was split open,' Nascimento said. 'She was already unconscious and her coat was torn. She was moaning in pain and her husband was trying to keep her alive. At that point, the pilot was also injured. We flew over the plane for another 15 minutes until he saw a field, where we fell and were swept away.' Pereira and her husband, Leandro Pereira, had recently married and took the hot air balloon ride to celebrate Valentine's Day - which is celebrated in Brazil on June 12. 'She was a very, very loved person. I can't believe Ju left,' Leandro's grandmother, Maria Aquino, told Brazilian news outlet G1. 'I still can't believe it, guys. A trip like that took her away.' Leandro's aunt, Jessica Aquino, questioned the pilot's decision to carry on with the flight despite what she described as unsafe weather conditions. 'She really wanted to come on this trip. But how can they put 33 people inside a balloon in weather like this?' Jessica said. 'Today the weather was horrible, very windy, so it was completely negligent of those people who put them inside.' Fabio Pereira, was arrested by the Civil Police on aggravated manslaughter and irregular ballooning activity charges. Investigators found that he was only licensed to perform private flights.
