BYU coach Kalani Sitake avoids comment on QB Jake Retzlaff's status amid transfer rumors

BYU coach Kalani Sitake declined to address the status of Jake Retzlaff on Tuesday amid reports that the quarterback is transferring after being accused of sexual assault in a civil lawsuit that was dismissed. Retzlaff reportedly plans to enter the transfer portal rather than face a suspension for violating the honor code at the university, which is run by the Mormon church. Retzlaff acknowledged a consensual sexual relationship in his defense against the lawsuit. 'I think it'll be inappropriate for me to make a statement on his situation first,' Sitake said at Big 12 football media days. 'I think that's his right. I think it's a private matter that he can speak for himself, and I'm going to give him the opportunity to do that.' Asked about how the team was reacting to losing the quarterback who started 13 games last season, Sitake spoke generally about competition among quarterbacks without acknowledging whether Retzlaff was still on the roster. Assuming Retzlaff is moving on, the Cougars will have a quarterback competition in preseason workouts. Stanford transfer Bear Bachmeier and McCae Hillstead, who previously was at Utah State, are considered the frontrunners. 'I think for me it's just allowing the guys to compete in the quarterback room we have,' Sitake said. 'The fortunate part for me is I have a coaching staff that was able to keep intact. And so there's always a knowledge of the offense for the guys that are there and then we have incoming talent that I think it'd be really special for us. So let's settle it on the field, let them compete and then I only know one way and I just play the best guys. That's how it works.' Retzlaff threw for 2,947 yards and 20 touchdowns with 12 interceptions as the Cougars contended for a spot in the Big 12 championship game before settling for an 11-2 finish that included an Alamo Bowl victory over Shedeur Sanders, Travis Hunter and Colorado.

Georgia Tech Baseball Reloads Through Transfer Portal Surge

Georgia Tech Baseball Reloads Through Transfer Portal Surge originally appeared on Athlon Sports. When Georgia Tech named James Ramsey its new head baseball coach, few expected the former ACC Player of the Year to hit the transfer portal running. But less than a month into the offseason, Ramsey has made it clear: the rebuild isn't coming, it's already underway. Advertisement Despite initially signaling that major changes weren't necessary, Ramsey dove headfirst into the portal and emerged with impact players who could reshape Tech's 2025 campaign. For a program looking to bounce back to national relevance, these calculated moves offer hope and intrigue, and fans should take notice. The first splash came with power-hitting infielder Ryan Zuckerman, a standout at Pittsburgh. Zuckerman led the Panthers with 13 home runs and 48 RBIs last season, bringing a much-needed slugging presence to the middle of the lineup. His bat is expected to slot into a power-hitting role vacated by departing veterans and could be a day-one starter at third base. On the mound, Ramsey added Justin Shadek, a battle-tested starter from Rutgers. While his 7.78 ERA might not raise eyebrows, context matters. Shadek made 15 starts and pitched at least five innings in six of his final seven appearances, a sign of reliability for a Georgia Tech staff that struggled with depth and consistency in 2024. If Ramsey can help him refine his control, Shadek could be a valuable innings-eater in ACC play. Adding an extra layer of drama is the arrival of Cade Brown, a former top recruit and Georgia Bulldog. Brown saw limited action in Athens but still carries upside. The 2024 high school standout batted just .171, but his elite pedigree and raw tools give Tech a developmental project worth investing in, especially sweet considering he's coming from across enemy lines. Georgia Tech fans have seen stars rise and fall at Russ Chandler Stadium, but there's a renewed energy now. And while the season is still months away, the foundation is already shifting. The Yellow Jackets may be quiet in the headlines, but this transfer class could make a loud statement come spring. Keep your eyes on The Flats, Ramsey's era has officially begun. CBS Sports Names Malachi Fields As Notre Dame's Top Portal Addition

CBS Sports Names Malachi Fields As Notre Dame's Top Portal Addition originally appeared on Athlon Sports. For the second season in a row, Notre Dame has elected to dip into the transfer portal to find their boundary receiver. Last season, Clemson transfer Beaux Collins came to South Bend for his final season of eligibility and started all 16 games for the Irish at the 'X receiver' position. He was a quality player who logged 41 receptions, 490 receiving yards, averaged 12.0 yards per catch and hauled in three touchdowns. Advertisement Collins was the team's leading receiver until Jaden Greathouse exploded in the CFP Semifinals and the national title game. This season, Notre Dame and offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock needed an impact playmaker at the boundary position and when Cavaliers receiver Malachi Fields entered his name in the portal, it became a no brainer for both parties where the Virginia native should spend his final year of eligibility. "Jaden Greathouse showed some signs as a go-to receiver in the national championship game. But Notre Dame lacked a true WR1 last season and hasn't had a wide receiver clear the 600-yard barrier since 2021. Fields should end that streak. A favorite of personnel departments across the country in the portal this winter, Fields combined for 1,619 yards and 10 TDs over the last two seasons. He's a big vertical field stretcher at 6-feet-4, 220 pounds and is a presence defenses will have to shade coverage toward. That's a dangerous thing when you consider how good Notre Dame's run game projects to be this year." - Chris Hummer, CBS Sports In back to back seasons, Fields logged over 50 receptions, 800 yards, averaged 14.0 yards per catch and hauled in five touchdowns in both 2023 and 2024. In what was considered a dormant offense, Fields was their lone bright spot. His fit at Notre Dame is coming at the perfect time, given Greathouse's breakout in the post season along with a talented returning offensive line and a bump in quarterback passing ability. At 6-4 223 pounds, Fields gives Notre Dame a presence in the boundary it has been lacking since the 2019 season when Chase Claypool was the go-to receiver. His play style and body type resemble Miles Boykins from the 2018 season, a year where he finished with 59 receptions, 872 yards, averaged 14.8 YPC and had eight touchdowns in 13 games. Fields adds a much needed boost in size, experience and production to this Irish receiving corps, and provides a star power element they have been lacking at the position for quite some time. Greathouse showed flashes throughout last season and is expected to be a go-to player once again this year for Denbrock, but the addition of Fields completely changes the narrative. Advertisement Notre Dame hasn't had a dynamic one-two punch at receiver in quite some time, and this will, by far, be the best one-two punch at wide receiver in the Marcus Freeman era. Combine Fields and Greathouse's potential of being a dynamic duo with 6-7 250 pound tight end Eli Raridon and an explosive run game featuring Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price, this Fighting Irish offense will likely put up some serious numbers this season. Michigan State's Kaleb Glenn out for 2025-26 season

June 20 - Michigan State forward Kaleb Glenn will miss the 2025-26 season after tearing his patellar tendon. Glenn, Michigan State's top-rated incoming transfer, reportedly suffered the injury during a non-contact shooting drill. The Florida Atlantic transfer was scheduled to have surgery on his right knee on Thursday. The 6-foot-7 Glenn averaged 12.6 points and 4.8 rebounds with a 53.1 field goal percentage for FAU last season as the team's leading scorer. One of three incoming transfers to the Spartans' 2025-26 team, Glenn ranked as the No. 15 small forward and the No. 81 overall player in the transfer portal. The Louisville, Ky. native was also a second-team All-American Athletic Conference honoree. Glenn transferred to Michigan State in April and will now have to redshirt for the upcoming season. He has two more years of eligibility. "I feel terrible for Kaleb and for his family, but we will be with them throughout this process," Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said in a statement. "It's awful that this happened just a couple of weeks after he got here in East Lansing and was working out with the guys and getting to know them. "In just a short time with us since he committed, we have really enjoyed having him and his family as part of our program. We're going to do everything that we can to support him and get him back on the floor." --Field Level Media

NCAA Grants Waiver for WCC Leading Scorer Malik Thomas, Expected to Transfer to Top Program

The NCAA granted a waiver to San Francisco guard Malik Thomas for an additional season of eligibility, making him among the most talented players available in the transfer portal. Thomas played just nine games as a freshman at USC in the 2021-22 season, and while he was not injured the NCAA will reward him a fourth full year after he played 27 games as a sophomore before transferring to San Francisco and playing 67 games the past two years. Advertisement Gonzaga will be happy to not have to face Thomas in the WCC anymore, and would no doubt love to bring him to Spokane to suit up alongside Braeden Smith, Jalen Warley, and fellow newcomer Adam Miller in a new look Zag backcourt. However, reporting from Jeff Goodman of the Field of 68 indicates Thomas is heavily expected to land at Virginia under new head coach Ryan Odom. Thomas was among the best players in the conference last year, leading the WCC with 19.9 points per game while shooting 39.4% from deep and 85.1% from the free throw line, tacking on 3.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.6 steals per contest. Advertisement The 6'4 guard began his career at USC but struggled to find playing time in two seasons, but really broke out during his two seasons with the Dons. His ability to get downhill and convert at the line and strong outside shooting makes him a blend of Nolan Hickman and Khalif Battle - a near perfect addition to this Zag roster. Virginia is now led by Odum, who went 52-21 at VCU after going 44-25 at Utah State before that, and the Cavs have done well for themselves in the transfer portal, bringing in guards Dallin Hall (BYU), Jacari White (North Dakota State), and Sam Lewis (Toledo), forward Devin Tillis (UC Irvine), and center Ugonna Onyenso (Kansas State). Thomas would be the lead man in a dynamic offensive system, and the ACC against Duke and North Carolina holds some allure, but he'd no doubt fit smoothly in Spokane where the interior scoring of Braden Huff and Graham Ike will pull attention away from him as a shooter, giving him plenty of open looks and chances to attack closeouts and get to the rim - not to mention extensive fastbreak opportunities. Whether Gonzaga can snag him away from the Cavs remains to be seen, but both teams are also competing with the professional ranks, where Thomas is working out with NBA teams and hoping to get attention internationally as well. Advertisement Gonzaga has five open scholarships after the addition of Adam Miller and commitment from Parker Jefferson, and they are known to be in the market for more backcourt help - recently contacting Desmond Claude and Duke Miles, who coincidentally decommitted from Virginia last month.
