Newcastle star Nick Pope appears to leak Eddie Howe's first summer transfer with ‘see you soon' Instagram message
NICK POPE has appeared to leak Newcastle's first signing of the summer transfer window. The Magpies are yet to add to Eddie Howe 's squad since their qualification for the Champions League. 4 4 Newcastle have been linked with a host of players, including the likes of Brighton's Joao Pedro and West Ham 's Mohammed Kudus. However, Pope's recent actions have suggested that the first signing could be further back down the pitch. The goalkeeper has commented on an Instagram post by Burnley 's James Trafford. The Clarets star shared a clip from England on his story, and Pope sent him a message which fans believed he thought was private. Pope wrote: "See you soon shagger." Fans spotted the gaffe on social media and were quick to comment. A second wrote: "This is going to be up there with some of the best NUFC memes." The Magpies have long been linked with the England Under-21 goalkeeper. Should his switch from Turf Moor to St James' Park go through, then he would be competing directly with Pope for the No.1 spot. SunSport exclusively reported that Trafford will cost Newcastle £30million. Trafford, 22, helped Burnley gain promotion to the Premier League last season. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca wants to hold onto both Josh Acheampong and Trevoh Chalobah, but admits that 'anything can happen' in the summer transfer window. Acheampong has been linked with both Newcastle United and Borussia Dortmund after breaking into the Chelsea senior squad last season, starting four times in the Premier League. The transfer window is now open again following the start of this summer's Club World Cup with clubs able to accelerate deals ahead of the new season. Arsenal chiefs are reportedly in talks with Eberechi Eze as the look to bring a striker to the club in this window. The Gunners have already agreed a fee for Brentford captain Christian Norgaard in a surprising move after contract talks with Thomas Partey stalled. They have also agreed to pay above the release fee for Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi and Mikel Arteta wants to sign RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko - though talks have stalled somewhat. Manchester United, meanwhile, have secured Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5m and are negotiating with Brentford about Bryan Mbeumo, having submitted an improved offer. Florian Wirtz is now officially a Liverpool player after agreeing a record £116.5m deal for the German superstar and completed the medical last Friday, while Reds defender Jarell Quansah is set to go the other way in a £35m deal to join Bayern Leverkusen. Pep Guardiola ended last season playing down the idea of change in his squad, talking about how nearly all of his players were still under contract and don't want to leave. Advertisement Some of that will come in a few of the younger players being loaned out, yet that cannot make up the numbers to make players and the manager happy. More is needed, and that means some big decisions that may not go down very well with players who have given the club a lot. Guardiola could not confirm that Ilkay Gundogan will stay amid interest from Galatasaray, yet the German has been very clear on more than one occasion since the end of the season that he wants to remain in Manchester. Those close to him point to him being needed so much last year that he automatically triggered a contract extension, and had no word before the end of the season that he was going to be moved on. John Stones is vulnerable in defence after missing large chunks of another season with injury, yet he has spoken at the Club World Cup about wanting to stay. "I'm here, I want to stay here, I love it," he said. "I'm here to help, and I don't know what's been said or speculated but I hope that kind of shuts it down." Both players have earned their place in the hearts of City fans for everything they have given to the club since arriving in 2016 and neither wants to go, so if the club wants to move them on they will have to force the issue. Advertisement City have of course been here before, with players who were even more decorated. Back in 2021 the brutal call was made to move Sergio Aguero on when he felt he still had more to give, and it was a prickly few final months for Kevin De Bruyne this spring when he didn't get the contract decision he was expecting. It was uncomfortable for many seeing club greats not being allowed to leave on their own terms, but no player is bigger than the club and sometimes those tough calls have to be made.
