Three City of Tshwane officials arrested over theft of R7m transformer

Three Tshwane municipality officials have been arrested by the Gauteng organised crime unit in connection with the theft of transformers from the Laudium substation. Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the arrests had come after a thorough investigation into a crime syndicate that had started operating in November 2024. She said the case dated back to the theft of a transformer, valued at about R7 million, from the Laudium substation. Initially, 11 people were arrested, including 10 subcontractors and one municipal employee. 'The 10 suspects who were subcontractors were released after they could not be linked to the crime, and one, who is an employee of the municipality, remained behind bars and has since made several court appearances,' Nevhuhulwi said. The three officials arrested on Tuesday have been charged with theft of essential infrastructure and are expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Wednesday. 'More arrests are expected as investigations continue,' Nevhuhulwi added. Tshwane police commissioner Major-General Samuel Thine applauded the investigative team's efforts. 'The police will continue working hard in dismantling the syndicates that target essential infrastructure and related crimes, as this has a detrimental impact on the economy of the country,' he said.

Jordan: JCI urges industrial establishments to benefit from transformer subsidy programme

AMMAN — The Jordan Chamber of Industry (JCI) has called on industrial establishments across various sectors to benefit from the programme subsidising the cost of purchasing electrical transformers, supported by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources through the Rural Electrification Directorate. The JCI said that the programme was launched following continuous follow-up by the chamber and with the support of Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Saleh Kharabsheh, who expressed interest in expediting its implementation in response to the needs of the industrial sector and in support of its expansion plans. The chamber added that the programme aims to enable factories to develop their infrastructure and ease their financial burdens, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. It allows factories located within industrial estates to obtain a subsidy covering 25 per cent of the cost of a transformer, with a maximum of JD60,000 per factory. Factories located outside industrial estates and outside regulated planning boundaries are eligible for a subsidy covering 100 per cent of the transformer's cost, up to a maximum of JD60,000. The programme excludes factories located within planning boundaries but outside industrial estates. JCI President Fathi Jaghbir stressed the importance of the programme as a 'practical' step to support the competitiveness of the industrial sector in the Kingdom, highlighting the chamber's commitment to facilitating access to various support programmes in cooperation with relevant government bodies. He noted that the chamber, through its Centre for Energy and Environmental Sustainability in Industry, is continuously receiving applications from factories and assisting them in completing the application requirements in direct coordination with the Rural Electrification Directorate at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. Jaghbir noted that since the beginning of this year, 16 factories have benefited from the programme, receiving a total of JD319,000 in subsidies. He stressed that efforts are ongoing to reach more eligible factories, with over 20 applications currently under review. The chamber urged factories wishing to benefit from the programme to contact the Centre for Energy and Environmental Sustainability in Industry at the chamber for guidance and assistance throughout all stages of the application process. © Copyright The Jordan Times. Naugatuck Walmart loses power after lighting strikes

NAUGATUCK, Conn. (WTNH) — Transformers struck by lightning triggered a power outage at the Naugatuck Walmart, according to fire crews. At approximately 6 p.m., the fire department received a call from the local Walmart regarding an exposure and an outside fire. Naugatuck Fire Chief Ken Hanks said, 'We found a transformer that had failed. We believe it may have been related to a lightning strike in the area.' Eversource crews are on the scene, working to isolate power in the affected section, and Walmart remains without power. 'There have been some power outages due to the lightning strike. Apparently the lightning energy came back through the powerlines and into the transformers,' Hanks said. Fire crews are cutting the power through transformer paths and are doing their best to keep the power on for residents. Once the transformers stop smoking, Eversource will replace each one. This is a developing story, check back later for updates. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
