Hong Kong may issue T1 warning on Friday as potential cyclone develops

Hong Kong Observatory will consider issuing a T1 typhoon warning signal on Friday and Saturday, urging the public to stay away from the shoreline and refrain from water sports. The forecaster on Thursday said the area of low pressure to the north of Luzon would develop into a tropical cyclone in the coming few days and come within 800km (497 miles) of Hong Kong. It said the cyclone would remain near the northeastern part of the South China Sea and intensify. 'Depending on its development and impact to Hong Kong, the Observatory will assess the need to issue the tropical cyclone warning signal later tomorrow to Saturday,' it said. 'There are uncertainties in its subsequent movement. It is more likely to turn northwards in the general direction of the vicinity of Taiwan to the coast of eastern Guangdong.' The Observatory said there would be swells in the next couple of days.

The cities that will have clear skies for July 4 fireworks

A record 72.2 million Americans are projected to travel across the U.S. for the Fourth of July Holiday. This includes an unprecedented 5.84 million air travelers and 61.6 million people driving, with gas prices at their lowest since 2021 contributing to increased road travel. Weather forecasts indicate optimal fireworks viewing conditions for major Northeast cities and the West Coast, particularly on Friday. Conversely, large parts of the central and northern U.S., including the Midwest, Southeast, and interior Southwest, anticipate disruptive downpours and thunderstorms, with flash flooding concerns. Meteorologists are monitoring a potential tropical cyclone in the Bay of Campeche that could bring heavy rainfall and rough surf to southeastern beaches, while AAA advises travelers to prepare for potential roadside issues.

Photos: Floods leave six dead and thousands displaced in China

Published On 26 Jun 2025 26 Jun 2025 Six people have died from floods in China's Guizhou province, state media said, after more than 80,000 people were driven from their homes this week. Towns and villages by a key river in China's Guangxi lay half-submerged as floodwaters from a province upstream roared into the mountainous region, with the expected landfall of a tropical cyclone later on Thursday compounding disaster risk. The flooding that overwhelmed the counties of Rongjiang and Congjiang in Guizhou province on Tuesday has spread downstream to other parts of southwest China, including rural settlements in Guangxi by the Liu River, which originates from Guizhou. On Thursday, state broadcaster CCTV said 'exceptionally large floods' had swept through Guizhou's Rongjiang county since Tuesday. China is enduring a summer of extreme weather. This week, authorities issued the second-highest heat warning for the capital, Beijing, on one of its hottest days of the year so far. Tens of thousands of people were evacuated last week in Hunan province – neighbouring Guizhou – due to heavy rain.

Hong Kong will experience rain and thunderstorms on Thursday, the weather forecaster has said, as it monitors the potential development of a tropical cyclone. The Hong Kong Observatory said that unsettled weather would affect the city, with a broad area of low pressure over the central part of the South China Sea expected to move closer to Western Guangdong and Hainan Island between Wednesday and Thursday. 'Under its influence, there will be a few showers locally later [on Wednesday], and more showers with squally thunderstorms [on Thursday],' the forecaster said. The Observatory added that it was closely monitoring whether the area of low pressure would develop into a tropical cyclone. It also issued a very hot weather warning at 6.54am, with the mercury hovering around 33 degrees Celsius (91.4 Fahrenheit) in urban areas and a few degrees higher in the New Territories.
