Trump Threatens Higher Tariffs on Japan, South Korea
US President Donald Trump has unveiled letters that threaten to impose higher tariff rates on key trading partners, including levies of 25% on goods from Japan and South Korea beginning Aug. 1. Trump also announced 25% rates on Malaysia and Kazakhstan, while South Africa would see a 30% tariff and Laos and Myanmar would face a 40% levy. The nations were the first in what the president promised would be a flurry of unilateral warnings and trade deals announced Monday, two days before agreements are due from trading partners facing his April 2 so-called reciprocal levies. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said around a dozen countries would receive notifications on Monday, and that additional letters will come shortly.

Trump says he'll send out letters setting unilateral tariff rates in 1 to 2 weeks
US President Donald Trump said he intended to send letters to trading partners in the next one to two weeks setting unilateral tariff rates, ahead of a July 9 deadline to reimpose higher duties on dozens of economies. Advertisement 'At a certain point, we're just going to send letters out. And I think you understand that, saying this is the deal, you can take it or leave it,' Trump told reporters on Wednesday at the Kennedy Centre in Washington where he was attending a performance. It is unclear if Trump will follow through with his pledge. The president has often set two-week deadlines for actions, only for them to come later or not at all. The president on May 16 said he would be setting tariff rates for US trading partners 'over the next two to three weeks'. The only trade framework the US has reached is with the UK, along with a tariff truce with China. Asked on Wednesday if he would extend the deadline for nations to cut deals with his administration before higher levies take effect, Trump said he would be open to it.
