Pair who kidnapped and attacked elderly Oldham imam jailed
Two men who kidnapped and violently attacked an elderly imam before trying to cover it up by setting fire to the car they used have been jailed Azizur Rahman, 39, and Shohad Miah, 25, were each found guilty of a range of offences including kidnap and robbery after their assault on the 87-year-old on 15 September last pair had pulled him into an Audi as he walked home from Oldham Central Mosque before blindfolding him with his own scarf, strangling him, stealing from him and then before dumping him 15 miles was sentenced to 11 years and four months while Miah was jailed for nine years at Manchester Crown Court. The court heard the pair had knocked out the man's teeth and left him with serious injuries including a bleed on the brain, lacerations and said the victim was eventually released after he was robbed of his phone, money and keys and was left abandoned on a dark road in Rishworth, West court also heard the imam had been stripped of his clothes and forced to drink alcohol. The car was left burnt out in a failed plan to destroy any trace of forensic evidence, Greater Manchester Police Sgt Rick Bolt previously said it "was not a random attack" and the victim has been "specifically targeted".He had visited Rahman's home and performed prayers and provided amulets, an object believed to confer protection or fortune, for a family member, he said."Fortunately, the kidnap was captured on CCTV footage, which along with other evidence, led investigation officers to the offenders," Det Sgt Bolto the victim was found in Oldham Road in Rishworth, Sowerby Bridge, a member of the public called emergency services and he was taken to hospital. The Audi was found a few days later after having been deliberately set alight, with forensic testing finding the victim's blood on the back seat. 'Vulnerable, elderly man' Following a police investigation, Rahman and Miah were arrested and answered no comment in their police interviews. They went on to claim that the Imam was the aggressor, but CCTV footage showed the victim being forced into the Audi. Investigators also found dashcam footage from Miah's car which recorded the pair planning the attack. In a statement given to the court, the imam said: "I honestly thought I was going to die."Before this happened, I used to walk to mosque every day by myself with freedom and I would look forward to going. "Now, even though I still walk to mosque by myself, I feel scared in case something like this happens again."He said his physical injuries had left him with impaired hearing and eyesight, as well as pain in his face and problems with his teeth. Det Sgt Bolt said: "This was a particularly shocking crime that targeted a vulnerable elderly man, causing him severe physical and emotional trauma." Man accused of horror axe attack now refusing to 'get out of bed' for court
A young man accused of attacking a woman with an axe and then running her over with her Ford Mustang is now reportedly refusing to leave his jail cell. Caleb Flentjar, 25, was slapped with 11 charges after he led police on a 50km pursuit from Nowra to Kiama on the NSW South Coast on Saturday afternoon. He failed to appear in court on Monday, after reportedly refusing to meet with a legal representative or step outside his cell at Wollongong Police Station. 'He refuses to see me, and presumably anyone else,' his lawyer Cassie Lee told the court, as reported by the ABC. 'Apparently he won't get out of bed.' Flentjar was arrested following an alleged violent spree that began shortly before 1pm in the quiet suburb of Worrigee, near Nowra. He allegedly threw an axe at a police car as officers arrived on the scene, then ran to a nearby home on Illawarra Circuit. There, he allegedly struck a 66-year-old woman sitting in a Ford Mustang with an axe, before dragging her from the vehicle and running her over. The woman suffered significant injuries to her legs and torso and remains in a serious but stable condition in St George Hospital. A manhunt was launched for the Ford Mustang, with officers locating the stolen car heading southbound on the Princes Highway about 2pm. When Flentjar allegedly failed to stop, a high-speed pursuit ensued. The Ford Mustang reportedly hit speeds of up to 180km/hour in an 80km/hour zone as it passed through Nowra, Bomaderry, Berry, Gerringong and Kiama. Police say Flentjar narrowly missed a highway patrol officer while allegedly swerving to avoid road spikes. The chase ended at Kiama Downs when the Mustang collided with a ute while driving on the wrong side of the Princes Highway. Flentjar allegedly attempted to flee the scene on foot but was tackled and restrained by members of the public until police arrived. He was arrested and taken to Wollongong Hospital under police guard. The driver of the ute was also taken to hospital for assessment. Police seized an axe and hammer from the Mustang for forensic examination.

Ex-nurse who paid patient $3,000 to have her ex boyfriend's 'd*** cut off' after breakup is banned from practicing for just FOUR years
A nurse who paid a patient $3,000 to cut her ex-lover's penis and tongue off and burn his face with acid will be allowed to treat patients in four years time. The decision by the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal was published last week after it was handed down to Karenjeet Kaur Warburton in March. Tribunal member Julie Dick heard Warburton had approached a patient she thought 'might be up for' severely injuring her former partner, senior Queensland Police Inspector Don McKay. Warburton had dated Insp McKay between March 2020 and early 2021. She gave the patient, Andrew Bown, photos of the inspector and his home between April 1 and October 6, 2021, and handed over $3,000 for the proposed hit. 'She had paid a significant amount and offered an even more significant amount to the proposed assailant,' Ms Dick wrote in the tribunal decision. 'Warburton instructed a law enforcement participant to have Insp McKay's 'penis and tongue cut off, his face burnt with acid, his spine to be severed with a knife for the purpose of causing paralysis, or to break every bone in his body so that he could no longer walk or talk'. Ms Dick noted that Warburton's efforts only ceased when she was arrested. Patient Andrew Bown (pictured) was sentenced to three-and-a-half years behind bars for his role in the plot to severely injure the Queensland inspector She pleaded guilty to one count of attempting to procure grievous bodily harm and one count of attempting to procure a malicious act with intent and was sentenced to five years behind bars, to be suspended after 16 months. When facing the health tribunal, the former nurse did not contest claims that she had committed professional misconduct by asking a patient to carry out her dirty work. The tribunal banned Warburton from working in healthcare for four years, which included time she had already served behind bars. 'It is unfortunate that this serious behaviour has led to the respondent being in the difficult circumstances in which she now finds herself,' Ms Dick wrote in her ruling. 'The tribunal is aware she will have to reapply for registration. 'Upon doing so, she will be confronted with having no recency of practice and there will be other steps that she might have to take.' Bown was charged with committing arson, attempting to procure a person to do grievous bodily harm on another person and possessing a dangerous item to assist another person in committing a crime. He was sentenced to three-and-a-half years behind bars for his part in the plot by Cairns District Court in November 2022.
