iOS 26 brings big changes to your iPhone lock screen — what to expect

It's no secret that the look of your iPhone is going to change in the fall, thanks to the introduction of the new Liquid Glass interface ushered in by iOS 26. And that new appearance will be evident right away as you gaze at your iPhone's lock screen. iOS 26 brings those translucent elements and glassy typefaces to the lock screen that you'll find throughout the operating system update. But Apple is introducing a few other lock screen changes that should make your phone feel more dynamic even before you unlock it. It's certainly the most extensive change to the lock screen's look since the introduction of iOS 16 in 2022 that gave you the ability to customize the screen with widgets and other changes. I don't think the iOS 26 update introduces an overhaul on that scale, but the changes are significant enough that I've spent some time exploring them in the iOS 26 developer beta. Whether you've downloaded the iOS 26 developer beta yourself or you're waiting for the public beta to arrive next month, here's what you can expect once you've got iOS 26 installed on your phone and you're ready to dive into the lock screen changes. At WWDC 2025, Apple showed off Spatial Scenes, a photographic effect pulled from its visionOS software that adds depth to images. This 3D-like effect causes slight shifts in positioning as you shift perspective, giving the photo a multi-layered appearance. And it's now part of the iPhone courtesy of iOS 26. Specifically, you can convert an image in your photo library to a spatial scene, and then use that 3D-like image as the wallpaper for your lock screen. Not every iPhone capable of running iOS 26 will have access to Spatial Scenes — you'll need an iPhone 12 or later to pull off the look, which relies on advanced computer vision techniques powered by your phone's chipset. I'm not sure how well Apple's demo of Spatial Scenes came across during the WWDC keynote live stream, but seeing it in person in the iOS 26 developer beta drives home what an improvement this is. I've taken a decade-old photo of my daughter, converted it into a Spatial Scene and made that the lock screen wallpaper on my iOS 26 test device. As I move my phone, I can see the background shift behind her, and she practically seems to pop out of the phone. It definitely spruces up the look my home screen. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. To set a Spatial Scene as your lock screen wallpaper, you just create a customized lock screen in the same way you've been able to since iOS 16 debuted. Just press and hold on your lock screen and then tap the plus button at the bottom to create a new customized lock screen. Scroll down the list of featured wallpapers until you see a heading for Spatial Scenes. Under that header, you'll find a selection of photos that Apple's computer vision technology has identified as ideal for converting into a more 3D-like image. Once you select a photo, the Spatial Space conversion happens automatically. After it's done, you can pinch and zoom to crop the photo and adjust whether to extend the wallpaper or turn off the depth effect. From there, it's just a matter of making the usual adjustments to font, color, widget and Control Center shortcuts that you'd perform to finish customizing your lock screen. I should note that Spatial Scenes is not limited to the iOS 26 lock screen. You can also go into the iOS 26 Photos app and convert your existing 2D photos into Spatial scenes. Select a photo in your library and tap the Spatial Scenes icon just above the photo on the right side of your screen. The conversion to a Spatial Scene image happens automatically. If you've been bothered by the sight of your carefully curated photos leaving too much of a gap underneath the subject of the photo and the clock on the phone's lock screen, iOS 26 introduces a solution in the form of an adaptive time display. Now, Apple says that the size of the numerals in the clock will dynamic adjust to better fit into the scene. It's likely the vagaries of an early-stage developer beta, but I've found the adjustments only kick in when I do a little fiddling with my lock screen photo. Still, when I've gotten the effect to work, it's really quite eye-catching with the clock stretching to better accommodate my lock screen image. Playback controls on the lock screen have featured album art for a while now, but iOS 26 is giving them a boost that should pair nicely with the Liquid Glass interface that's now featured in the software. Artwork for some songs is now animated, and it's supposed to interact with the playback controls and their newfound glassiness. My guess is that this feature is largely geared toward newer albums either purchase through Apple's online store, or streamed via the Apple Music service as the album covers in my library — songs for Men of a Certain Age to mildly rock out too, basically — remain pretty static, even after the iOS 26 upgrade. However, a few of my daughter's downloads have found their way into my library and the album art for Olivia Rodrigo's "good 4 u" shimmers and vibrates as advertised.

( announced that two of its RF lenses for 3D VR video — the RF5.2mm F2.8 L DUAL FISHEYE (released in December 2021) and the RF-S3.9mm F3.5 STM DUAL FISHEYE (released in June 2024) — will offer compatibility with 'Apple Projected Media Profile' (hereafter 'APMP'), a QuickTime movie profile that will be supported by the Apple Vision Pro spatial computer developed by Apple Inc. (hereafter 'Apple') [1]. Canon has also announced that it will make its RF-S7.8mm F4 STM DUAL lens (released in November 2024) compatible with 'spatial photo,' and that it will help to further expand the 3D VR market through collaboration with Apple going launched the EOS VR System for capturing VR video in 2021, and since then has met the needs for VR video production in diverse fields including entertainment, tourism, and education. In June 2024, the company announced the RF-S7.8mm F4 STM DUAL, a lens capable of recording 'spatial video,' which is a type of 3D footage with a sense of depth, for the Apple Vision Pro. Through these developments, Canon has been helping to expand the range of expression available in 3D the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), hosted by Apple on June 9, 2025, Apple announced visionOS 26, the newest OS for the Apple Vision Pro. In conjunction with this announcement, two of Canon's RF lenses for 3D VR video, RF5.2mm F2.8 L DUAL FISHEYE and RF-S3.9mm F3.5 STM DUAL FISHEYE, will offer native playback of 'APMP,' which will be supported by visionOS 26, scheduled to be released in the latter half of 2025. Specifically, footage shot with these lenses and compatible cameras [2] can be converted to 'APMP' using the EOS VR Utility [3] app, making it even easier for users to enjoy a high-quality, immersive experience with the Apple Vision updating EOS VR Utility, the RF-S7.8 mm F4 STM DUAL will also be able to handle not only 'spatial video' but also 'spatial photo,' which is a 3D image that allows users to enjoy a sense of depth as a still image, when combined with Canon's mirrorless camera models EOS R7 (released in June 2022) and EOS R50 V (released in May 2025). Additionally, in mid-July 2025, the EOS R50 (released in March 2023) will also be made compatible with the EOS VR SYSTEM through a firmware update, thereby enabling both 'spatial video' and 'spatial photo.'Going forward, Canon will further strengthen the EOS VR SYSTEM in collaboration with Apple to meet the creative needs of pro users who strive to produce stunning immersive video as they explore new ways of storytelling.[1] Apple Vision Pro, QuickTime, and visionOS are trademarks of Apple Inc. iOS 26 has been officially announced (rolling out in September) and along with the new numbering convention, one of the most substantial changes lies in the design. Many industry experts, alongside Apple itself, label the new Liquid Glass look as the biggest design overhaul in years. "Inspired by the depth and dimensionality of visionOS, the new design takes advantage of Apple's powerful advances in hardware, silicon, and graphics technologies. The new material, Liquid Glass, is translucent and behaves like glass in the real world," says Apple in an official press release. The new Liquid Glass look is one of the biggest visual overhauls in iOS This is all fine and dandy, but it raised a couple of questions in my mind immediately. Do we NEED a translucent interface that behaves like real glass? And what does that even mean? That if you swipe or tap too fast or hard, it would break? The second thing is right there in the text itself. Liquid Glass takes advantage of the hardware processing power of Apple's silicon. I can't help myself but wonder, don't we have better and more useful ways to utilize hardware than to make things look like "glass in the real world"? And finally, what are the chances Apple is throwing sand in our eyes in order to deflect our attention away from much more important stuff? Such as the fact that Siri is nowhere (mentioned just two times during the official event), and that Apple Intelligence still feels like a bad copy of what every other LLM has been doing for a long time now. But first – let's talk about Liquid Glass. Form over function – people like pretty things Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but also in his pre historic brain | Image by stux There are a lot of reasons why we love polished and good-looking things, smartphone interfaces included. Some of these things are rooted deeply in our brains from prehistoric times, while others we've learnt to value a bit later in our evolutionary journey. Evolutionary basis of aesthetics Our ability to recognize symmetry goes way back to ancient prehistoric times, and it's tied to our survival mechanisms. Not only in faces, but in everything around us – cars, furniture, the shape of your house, smartphones, clothes – the list goes on and on. It's a well-known phenomenon, and even though we're trying to escape it and appraise things for other qualities, it's so visceral that most of the time it's beyond our conscious efforts. Neuroscience and psychology of aesthetics Dopamine - such a simple molecule but so powerful! How does this work? Basically, without getting into boring scientific details, visually pleasing things activate a circuit in our brain tied to the dopamine reward system. Put simply, you feel good when you see pretty things, and you also seek them actively. This leads to some very interesting effects on our ability to be objective, and one of these is called "the aesthetic-usability effect." The aesthetic-usability effect It does look good but is it actually functional? The aesthetic-usability effect refers to users' tendency to perceive attractive products as more usable. People tend to believe that things that look better will work better — even if they aren't actually more effective or efficient. This lies at the core of many interface design decisions, including iOS 26 and Liquid Glass. This effect has also been used for decades – if anyone has even used Linux versus Windows or macOS, they know how powerful the first one can be and, at the same time, how most people prefer the better-looking OS. The decision happens almost instantly. Testing has shown that users form an opinion about a webpage within 50 milliseconds of exposure. iOS 26 – Liquid Glass or smoke and mirrors? Siri's still in kindergarten compared to other smart assistants Back to the topic at hand. So, people like pretty things, and Apple decided to make iOS 26 pretty with Liquid Glass. What lies behind this decision? Probably the fact that the smarter Siri Apple has promised us is still somewhere in school. In contrast, other smart assistants and LLMs can now write scripts, generate videos and podcasts, create movies from still frames, organize your emails, and be much more useful in general with multimodal input and cloud access. Apple Intelligence has been a major talking point ever since its official announcement last year, but it continues to lag behind the competition. Apple made a big deal of adding Live Translate to iOS 26 , but this feature has been on board OneUI since January 2024. The same goes for Visual intelligence. The ability to contextually search for an object has been part of the Android world for more than a year now, called 'Circle to Search'. Is Apple playing catch-up with iOS? All the supposedly new features in iOS 26 I believe the answer is "yes." However, there are some positives to be taken from the latest iOS 26 announcement. The major one is consistency. This Liquid Glass overhaul may or may not be useful or helpful, but it will arrive across all Apple devices. The whole ecosystem – iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Vision Pro headsets. That's a bold move and probably required more work than we imagined. But the truth of the matter is that Liquid Glass seems to me as a big cover up for the lack of new and original features. iOS 26 is playing the catch-up game and it seems this will continue to be the case for some time.
