Lauren Sánchez Bezos's Ongoing Fashion Fascination with Sophia Loren
By her own admission, Lauren Sánchez Bezos did not marry Jeff Bezos in the kind of gown she initially envisioned. Originally, she told Vogue's Chloe Malle that she had visions of a strapless dress. But after going on a Blue Origin space flight to the Kárman line, both her perspective about her life—and style—shifted. 'It went from 'I want a simple, sexy modern dress' to 'I want something that evokes a moment,' and where I am right now. I am a different person than I was five years ago,' she said. So, she researched pictures of brides from the 1950s. One in particular stuck with her: Sophia Loren's wedding dress from the 1958 movie Houseboat. 'I said, 'That's it. That's the dress.'' After several conversations with Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, Dolce & Gabbana made her a high lace neck mermaid-line gown with 180 hand-finished, silk chiffon-covered buttons that took over 1900 hours to make. 'The whole thing was like a dream,' Sánchez says. Loren's original—and fictional—dress was made by legendary costume designer Edith Head, who received eight Academy Awards (as well as a total of 35 nominations) and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her work with Paramount Pictures and Universal Pictures. She's known for crafting the clothes worn by Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday and Breakfast at Tiffany's, Grace Kelly in To Catch a Thief, and Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard. In April, Sánchez attended the 2025 Breakthrough Prize in a 1994 John Galliano dress once worn by the Fellini muse. On a now-deleted Instagram post (Sanchez cleared her profile after officially marrying Bezos) she called her an 'icon of strength and timeless beauty.' It seems likely that Sánchez may have more Old Hollywood fashion nods up her (long lace) sleeves.

Why Jeff Bezos' Wife Lauren Sánchez Didn't Want "Sexy" Wedding Dress
Originally appeared on E! Online No, Lauren Sánchez didn't find her wedding dress on Amazon. Instead, Jeff Bezos' bride relied on luxury fashion house Dolce & Gabbana to fit her in a custom gown featuring a high neckline, a snatched corset and hand-appliquéd lace for their June 27 nuptials in Venice, Italy. 'It went from 'I want a simple, sexy modern dress' to 'I want something that evokes a moment,'" she told Vogue of her wedding dress' design in an interview published shortly after the ceremony, "and where I am right now. I am a different person than I was five years ago." The journalist—who was previously married to talent agent Patrick Whitesell from 2005 to 2019—continued, 'I went into a lot of therapy and it's changed me in a bunch of ways. But it's really Jeff." Explaining how the billionaire has "revealed" her most confident self, Lauren said of her current mindset, "I feel safe. I feel seen. He lets me be me." And that's why she ultimately went for a dress based on the high-necked look Sophia Loren wore to marry Cary Grant in 1958's Houseboat. As she explained of Jeff, "Like I said about Sophia Loren being unapologetically free, he lets me be unapologetically free." Overall, Lauren spent a year and a half designing her dress with the intention of showing less skin. 'I researched pictures of brides in the 1950s," she recalled. "I wanted to reflect back, and I saw Sophia she was in high lace, up to the neck, and I said, 'That's it. That's the dress.'' For her wedding day jewelry, Lauren ditched the cushion-cut pink engagement ring Jeff, 61, proposed with in May 2023, opting to keep it simple with diamond and white gold earrings also made by Dolce & Gabbana. "We don't have a lot of traditions that we're keeping," she explained, sharing how the earrings would be her something borrowed. "I love traditions, but for a 55-year-old woman, it's a little different." More from E! "Well, Blue Origin," she said, revealing that had brought up a secret souvenir from her April spaceflight on one of Jeff's astronautics company crafts. "Because it was literally one of the most profound experiences I've ever had in my life." But of course, the couple's multi-day celebrations included more than just Lauren's Loren-inspired gown. According to Vogue, she had also set aside a sweetheart neck gown inspired by the Rita Hayworth film Gilda for the wedding dinner, as well as an Oscar de la Renta cocktail dress adorned with 600 yards of hand-sewn chain and 175,000 crystals for the after-party. Plus, she also chose a 2003 Alexander McQueen dress and the Schiaparelli corseted number for the wedding's not one, but two welcome parties. However, Lauren knows that the most talked-about look would be her wedding dress. After all, as she put it, "It is a departure from what people expect." "But it's very much me," added the Good Day L.A. alum, who tends to wear gowns with plunging necklines on the red carpet. "It's so elegant, it's timeless." The Real Inspiration Behind Lauren Sanchez's Wedding Gown
"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links." Amid the extreme fanfare—and corresponding outrage—surrounding her Italian nuptials to Jeff Bezos, Sanchez has finally revealed her much-anticipated wedding dress. She selected her friends the Italian designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana of Dolce & Gabbana to craft the gown. And instead of pushing boundaries with a modern silhouette, Sanchez wanted timeless glamour. So, she turned to the past. More specifically, the bride reverted back to the '50s for her inspiration. The dress is based on the one Sophia Loren wore to marry Cary Grant in the 1958 film Houseboat. The bodice is quite similar: A white, boned corset with a sweetheart neckline blanketed in lace that extends to a high neck and long sleeves. 180 chiffon-covered buttons trace a line up the middle. The skirt, however, swaps a full '50s silhouette for that of a fluted mermaid. A sweeping tulle-and-lace veil tops it off. The whole thing took over 900 hours to make. It's a departure from the revealing silhouettes Sanchez often favors (she famously exposed a lace bra beneath a plunging white Alexander McQueen blazer to Donald Trump's presidential inauguration) but no less body conscious. She wore a similar silhouette to the amfAR gala in Cannes last month: a white Roberto Cavalli strapless mermaid gown trimmed in ostrich feathers. So far on the bridal circuit, Sanchez has attempted to skew more capital-F fashion. She's worn a one-shoulder vintage 2003 Alexander McQueen dress and Schiaparelli couture, lavishly embroidered with an extremely exaggerated, corseted waist. This morning, she sported a classic white Dior skirt suit with an Hermès silk scarf tied on her head in an homage to Audrey Hepburn. She is rumored to be changing into a sweetheart neck, corseted gown inspired by the 1946 Rita Hayworth film Gilda. Other publications have noted that Sanchez seems to be chasing the fashion crowd with choices like her couture gown from Schiaparelli, a brand that the industry has dubbed elite in its creativity. References have also become a popular red-carpet hack, as editors and watchers alike uncover sartorial easter eggs left by celebrities and their stylists. Sanchez wanted to evoke a moment rather than opting for something simple. But the key to an interesting historical reference is that modern interpretation. For Sanchez, it seems the past curries more favor than the present. When in Venice, it's of course appealing to channel golden-age film stars—La Dolce Vita, and all. Their ensembles exaggerate the wearer's femininity in a manner that parallels Sanchez's style of dress (minus a bit of fabric—it is 2025, after all.) But then, there's a reason the 1950s have become shorthand for regressive gender roles. The gowns in Houseboat and Gilda are beautiful, but both films feature female characters who are criticized for their promiscuity and failed domesticity. In an era where so many things feel like they've moving backwards, it's hard not to read something deeper into this kind of '50s cosplay coming from the newly-minted wife of a billionaire.
