‘It's my own fault' - Colin Keane hit with 14-day ban after miscalculating British whip rules
Colin Keane's miscalculation of the British whip rules last week has, as expected, cost him a 14-day ban and the upcoming ride on the season's star colt Field Of Gold in the Sussex Stakes. Ireland's champion jockey used his whip eight times when winning on Windlord for his Juddmonte employers at Sandown on Friday. Although that would have been fine in Ireland, the eight strikes were two over the cross-channel limit, a blunder Keane immediately acknowledged as his own fault. 'I'm so used to eight as it is at home, I just have to abide by the rules here. That's the only way I can put it. I know six is the amount over here but when I was in a ding-dong battle, I suppose it just went out of my head unfortunately. It's unfortunate but it's my own fault,' he admitted. READ MORE The British Horseracing Authority's whip review committee met on Tuesday and suspended the Irishman from July 22nd to August 4th. He was also fined £350 (€405). The ban also means Keane misses the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot. It's a bitter blow for the six-time Irish champion jockey, who was appointed to the plum job of Juddmonte's number one rider in Europe last month. He quickly settled in with a superb success on Field Of Gold in the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, a performance that prompted Keane to describe the grey colt as the best he's ridden. He also won May's Irish 2,000 Guineas on Field Of Gold. The John and Thady Gosden trained horse is as low as 4-7 in some betting lists to complete a Group One hat-trick in the Sussex Stakes at the end of the month. Keane replaced Kieren Shoemark on Field Of Gold in the Irish Guineas following the horse's controversial defeat in the Newmarket Guineas when a fast-finishing runner-up to Ruling Court.

Junior Alvarado considering appeal of fine and suspension for excessive whip usage in Kentucky Derby
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Jockey Junior Alvarado is considering appealing a fine and suspension for using his whip eight times on Sovereignty in winning the Kentucky Derby on May 3. Alvarado was fined $62,000 and suspended two days by the Horse Racing Integrity and Safety Authority, whose rules allow a rider to use a whip six times in a race. He has 10 days to inform HISA if he plans to appeal. 'I would like to just get it over with and put it behind me, I don't want to carry this one extra day, but at the same time I don't want to give up that easily like they were right,' Alvarado told the Daily Racing Form last weekend. 'I would like to move forward and fix something. As everybody can see, it's unfair the penalties we're facing. Maybe (by appealing) we can get something good out of this.' On Dec. 1, Alvarado was found to have used his whip seven times in winning the $250,000 Cherokee Mile, also at Churchill Downs. He met with Churchill Downs stewards via video last week to discuss the Derby. 'I didn't abuse the horse,' Alvarado told DRF. 'Nobody can tell me, even if they can prove that I hit the horse two extra times, it was in an abusing way, it's just ridiculous. The punishment doesn't fit the crime and I don't think there was any crime.' If Alvarado does not appeal, he will serve the two day suspension May 29-30. He is based in New York, which isn't racing those days. ___ AP horse racing:

Alvarado banned and fined $62,000 for overuse of whip in Kentucky Derby win
Junior Alvarado, who rode Sovereignty to victory at last weekend's Kentucky Derby, has been fined and banned for overuse of his whip during the race. The jockey was found to have used the whip 'more than the permitted amount' the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) said on Saturday. Under HISA regulations, jockeys are allowed to strike their horse six times during a race; Alvarado used the whip on Sovereignty eight times. It was his second such offense in the last 180 days, meaning his fine was doubled to $62,000 – 20% of his winnings from the Kentucky Derby. The jockey can appeal his punishment, but has yet to make a statement. The 38-year-old Alvarado rode Sovereignty to a thrilling victory in last weekend's race, pulling away from the heavy favorite Journalism down the final stretch. Sovereignty will not compete in this month's Preakness Stakes, the second leg of US horse racing's Triple Crown.
