Hotel Review: Cupitt's Estate, Ulladulla, NSW
Don't miss out on the headlines from Lifestyle. Followed categories will be added to My News. The priority for most people in retirement is rest or travel. Not so Griff and Libby Cupitt. Over 18 years, the former farmers and one-time owners of the Bowral Hotel in the NSW Southern Highlands have turned a former South Coast dairy farm into a destination vineyard, winery, brewery and restaurant, adding accommodation three years ago and creating a legacy for the next generation of their family who have now taken the reins. The location Cupitt's Estate is set on 75ha on the outskirts of Ulladulla, five minutes from town, and three hours' drive south of Sydney on the NSW South Coast. It's ideally situated to give guests the best of country and coast in a weekend getaway – Mollymook's beaches, golf club and restaurants are minutes away, and we also spend a few hours wandering the historic village of Milton with its antique shops, galleries, boutiques and cafés. The property has views across sauvignon blanc vines and paddocks to the Budawang Ranges and the upper reaches of the Burrill Lake wetlands. The free-standing one-bedroom villas are surrounded by gardens, settle the structures into the landscape and give guests greater privacy. The arrival After our customary lunch stop at Hayden's Pies in Ulladulla – pass at your peril – we find Washburton Road, and the entry to Cupitt's Estate. At reception, a cute cottage which was part of the original Washburton dairy farm, we are pointed further down the drive to parking in front of a sloping row of 10 free-standing one-bedroom villas (including one that's wheelchair-accessible), designed by Sherson Architecture and constructed off site by Wagga Wagga modular builders Prefabulous. They were installed in 2021-22 and in the seasons since, the surrounding gardens designed by Rosie – a trained horticulturalist and winemaker – have flourished to better settle the structures into the landscape and give guests greater privacy. The villa is tastefully decorated in cream and graphite tones with Scandi touches, and is comfortably furnished. What's inside Entering our villa, one of four with a bath-tub on their private deck, I'm distracted by two stunning monochrome marine prints on the living area wall. I recognise the artist, South Coast printmaker Peta West, from my Instagram feed and I'm happy to be able to gaze at the real thing for a while. There is more coastal-inspired art in the separate bedroom and central bathroom, all sourced and purchasable from Gallery Alchemy in Milton. The deck, with its views across lush paddocks, becomes another source of contentment for our stay, as we sit and debate whether a hole in the hillside yonder is a wombat burrow, watch a fox steal through the dusk, and weigh up the therapeutic value in watching grazing cows – Griff's black angus herd numbers 70. My villa is one of four with a bath-tub on their private deck. The villa, with its high ceilings and timber flooring, is tastefully decorated in cream and graphite tones with Scandi touches, and is comfortably furnished. It has a kitchen – a breakfast hamper with way more provisions than needed is included in the room rate – and if you fancy buying from the mini-bar, it includes a kit for assembling cocktails premixed 'with love' by the bar team as well as wine and beer made on-site. Tea drinkers will note the English breakfast from Tea Journeys in Nowra, and the drip coffee is local too, from Guerilla Roasters in Moruya. The bathroom has a rain shower and marble-topped vanity with quality Leif products by the basin. Our package includes a two-course dinner at the dining room, which is a two-minute walk from the villas. Food & drink Our package includes a two-course dinner at the dining room, which is a two-minute walk from the villas, past the outdoor 'wine garden' casual dining space that hums at weekends but is still on a cool Thursday evening (dinner is served Thursday Saturday and lunch seven days). Menus change with the seasons, executive chef Jonathan Pryor looking to the estate's own kitchen garden, wider local produce and Mediterranean influences for inspiration to match head winemaker Wally Cupitt's drops made only metres away with cool-climate grapes grown mainly around Tumbarumba and the NSW Hilltops region. And there's more below the surface, literally – a wine cave under the restaurant is a stop on a behind-the-scenes tour that runs three days a week. Tastings are also conducted in an 1851 building that was once the original dairy's creamery, with Ruby's rosé – named for a Cupitt granddaughter – among more popular bottles. Menus change with the seasons. Extras Live music sessions are on Fridays and Sundays and the restaurant runs a calendar of special events. What's hot Sustainability matters at Cupitt's Estate. They operate a closed-loop waste system throughout and EV drivers will find a charging station outside reception. Cupitt's Estate is a complete, all-in-one country getaway. What's not I can't afford the artwork. Verdict - 8.5/10 Cupitt's is a complete, all-in-one country getaway. The writer was a guest of Cupitt's Estate. An overnight Winter Gourmet Getaway package including dinner, breakfast hamper and wine tasting, is from $499 a couple from Sunday to Thursday. In the Columbia River Gorge, the Food and Wine are as Epic as the Nature
At buona notte winery in Cascade Locks, Oregon, my husband and I found winemaker Graham Markel's pét-nat zippy and the appetizer table piled high with melon and prosciutto. Platters of salad, grilled potatoes with salsa verde, and roast pork covered several candlelit tables festooned with wildflowers. We'd come for a late-spring feast to celebrate the seven local growers from whom Markel sources grapes to make his delicious Italian-style wines. He is one of a handful of young winemakers (not to mention cidermakers, like Jasper Smith and Ella McCallion of Son of Man, who make their wild-fermented Basque-style brews in the same space as Markel) who are putting the Columbia Gorge on the wine map. This renegade group might not have the slick tasting rooms and award-winning Pinot Noirs of Oregon's better-known Willamette Valley, but they make up for it with their zeal for what they do and the land on which they do it. While the Columbia Gorge has been an official American Viticultural Area for only 20 years, people have been growing grapes here since the 1840s. Formed by ancient volcanoes and glacial floods, the Columbia River, which starts in British Columbia and empties into the Pacific, spends the last 309 miles of its 1,243-mile length dividing Oregon and Washington. Eighty miles of that borderland is the Gorge, a deep river canyon of dramatic basalt cliffs, waterfalls, and some of the prettiest trails in the Pacific Northwest. For years the town of Hood River, on the Oregon side, was the main attraction for its world-class windsurfing and, more recently, its craft breweries, but we chose to stay across the river in White Salmon, Washington, closer to some of the area's new wineries and restaurants. Perched high on a cliff, the town has the best bakery in the Gorge, a charming wine bar, and stunning views of Mount Hood on a clear day. Elle McCallion of Son of Man cidery MELISSA BRADLEY Summertime at the Society Hotel AJ MEEKER A glamping tent at Skamania Lodge TALIA JEAN GALVIN In contrast to the more rustic digs of my previous visits (the cabins at the Society Hotel and the glamping-style tents at Skamania Lodge), we stayed this time in the cedarwood-and-corten-steel environs of the new Iconica and the recently updated Inn of the White Salmon. Most days we woke early and hit the trails. We'd unknowingly timed our visit perfectly with wildflower season, and on the Catherine Creek loop, we found the landscape a riot of purple lupines and yolk yellow balsamroot. After each hike we made a beeline for White Salmon Baking Co. and rewarded ourselves with blueberry polenta cake or mushroom scrambles. White Salmon has only about 2,600 residents but a restaurant circuit worthy of a much larger town. We had excellent carnitas tacos at Pixán Taqueria & Cantina, perfectly cooked steak with crispy potatoes at Henri's, and a delicious burrata served with mint pesto at the tasting room Soča Wine Shop & Bar. Much credit for the town's thriving food scene goes to California-native Nina Jimenez and Slovenia-born Jure Poberaj, an entrepreneurial couple who opened White Salmon Baking Co. and Soča before selling both to focus on their winery, Poberaj Wines. One afternoon I drove into the hills above White Salmon to visit them. After Poberaj, the nephew of natural winemaking pioneer Joško Gravner, led me past the clay amphora he'd just buried in the ground, we tasted wines directly from the barrel. I laughed as she and Schmidt showed me around the winery they opened in Cascade Locks in 2023: Wine tanks are named after female screen characters, like Regina (from Mean Girls) and Oksana (from Killing Eve). The couple built their business via Instagram, doing home deliveries during the pandemic.

A Sprawling $28 Million Vineyard Property Lists In Santa Ynez Valley
The vineyard compound is listed for $8 million in Santa Ynez Valley. Santa Ynez Valley north of Santa Barbara, California rivals Napa Valley and Sonoma for its high-quality wines, particularly pinot noir, chardonnay, and syrah. With more than 200 wineries and tasting rooms, it's climbed the ranks as one of the most sought-after wine regions in the country. A brand-new listing, perfect for enophiles, business-minded folks, or those in the market for a spectacular luxury compound, recently hit the market for a cool $28 million. The vineyard estate was previously a walnut farm before late real estate mogul Tony Vincent, Sr. scooped up the property in 2007 with the intention of transforming it into a winery. Vincent Vineyards and Winery was established by the family, with the vineyards first vines planted in 2008. The 25-acre property has 14 acres of well-maintained Bordeaux varietals that have produced dozens of 90+ point wines from its fully equipped on-site winery. Those craving a vintner lifestyle have the opportunity to take over the commercial operation or start their own private label. The living room. 'Tony started the property from scratch,' says listing agent Neyshia Go of The Go Group, Sotheby's International Realty. 'The site was originally an orchard, and Tony and his team scraped soils, built infrastructure, and planted all of the vines. It was a true passion project for him that he poured his entire heart and soul into.' Go, who is listing the property with agent Byron Wood, says the property is delivered fully turnkey for the ultimate wine enthusiast, as every step of the winemaking process, including bottling, labeling, and production, is done on site. The primary bedroom has a balcony overlooking the pool. The winery just scrapes the surface of the property's many structures. There's a six-bedroom Italianate-style villa—the beating heart of the compound—as well as two guest homes. After retreating from a day on the winery, you're welcomed back to the sprawling residence in style with dozens of amenities to enjoy. The entrance features a grand, double-height foyer through a set of custom wood doors and a staircase with an iron raining that wraps up to the second floor. The interiors blend Tuscan-style design with laid-back California chic through a neutral color palette, natural materials, and a minimalist design. In addition to the six bedrooms, the home features spacious, light-filled living areas, a gourmet kitchen with top-end appliances, mahogany cabinets, and a center, eat-in island. Winery and tasting room. The sizable bedrooms feature high ceilings, large windows, and en suite bathrooms. Most bedrooms, including the primary suite, feature fireplaces and walk-out balconies, plus bathrooms with deep soaking tubs. Amenities include a gym with a massage table and a sunny office. Nearly every room on the main level connects to the manicured pool pavilion, which has a stunning cabana with doors that fold in for an indoor-outdoor experience. The large pool is lined with planters and has an elevated hot tub and several lounging areas. There's also an outdoor fireplace, two guest homes with three additional bedrooms, and a seven-car garage. A covered patio with an outdoor dining table. Perfectly located in proximity to Los Olivos, Santa Barbara, and Solvang, which both feature incredible five-star hotels, and are home to many fabulous restaurants.
