Lindsay Park colt Shining Smile continues sprint dominance at Flemington with fifth straight win
Shining Smile refused to break his winning habit at Saturday's Flemington meeting. Shining Smile strung together four straight wins before going for a break following a Listed success at Flemington in March but had to work to make it five in a row in the VRC Member Sarah Hart Trophy (1000m). The Spirit Of Boom colt carried 59.5kg after apprentice Logan Bates' claim but would not wilt in the last 200m, getting the better of Oyster Lane late in the race despite giving the runner-up 4kg. The youngster's latest win took his stakes tally to more than $480,000 in seven starts, thrilling co-trainer Ben Hayes. 'He's done a great job today,' Hayes, who trains Shining Smile in partnership with his brothers Will and JD, said. 'To carry a big weight and give weight to all his competition like he did and be as tough as he was through the line, it's really exciting. 'Arguably, he's the best performed two-year-old for the whole year, albeit not in the big races. 'He's won three stakes races and he's got an exciting future ahead of him.' Shining Smile + Flemington Straight = ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ Five in a row for the Hayes trained colt, he's a beauty! @Logez27 @lindsayparkrace â€' 7HorseRacing ðŸŽ (@7horseracing) July 19, 2025 • Derby path looms for Busuttin-Young stayer The Lindsay Park operation has always been known as a prolific producer of two-year-old winners, a reputation that stretching back decades to family patriarch Colin Hayes's days. Hayes said two-year-old winners had been a focus for the stable in the last two seasons, an approach that has borne fruit this season. 'It's been our best year to date with two-year-olds,' Hayes said. 'I think we've had nearly 30 winners for the year. 'It's something that we've really worked on in the last couple of years and something that our father (David) was very good at. 'It's nice to have a very good season and we've got some really exciting horses coming into the spring now.' Shining Smile will be one of Lindsay Park's representatives in three-year-old sprints early next season, including the Group 3 Vain Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on August 16. Hayes said the consistent galloper's prowess down the Flemington straight could lead him to tackle top company later in the spring as part of a Lindsay Park three-year-old assault on the carnival. 'He's a tough horse and he loves a fight,' Hayes said. 'We're really looking forward to seeing what he's got. 'He's got a pretty good record down the straight so he could be a horse for a race like the Coolmore. 'He's going to be right in a race like that.'

Marlins beat Twins 2-0
Kyle Stowers homered and the Miami Marlins stretched their winning streak to eight, one shy of the club record set in 2008, with a 2-0 win over the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night. Edward Cabrera (3-2) struck out six and only allowed two hits and one walk in seven innings, the longest start of the season by a Marlins pitcher. He struck out Byron Buxton to end the third for his 400th career strikeout, becoming the third-fastest to reach the mark in franchise history. Stowers gave Miami a 1-0 lead in the second inning with his 14th home run of the season. He initially took first base after appearing to get hit by a pitch. But Minnesota challenged and the call was overturned. Anthony Bender pitched a perfect eighth and Ronny Henriquez struck out back-to-back batters to begin the ninth to help secure his fourth save. Minnesota starter Joe Ryan (8-4) also went seven innings, allowing just one earned run on five hits. The Twins, who were shut out by the Tigers on Sunday, were blanked for the seventh time this season. Key moment Miami added an insurance run in the eighth. Jesús Sánchez sent a shot to deep center field and Buxton made a leaping attempt at the wall to keep the ball in play. Sánchez hustled to third and a review showed it was not a home run. Otto Lopez was intentionally walked to put runners on first and third but Nick Fortes hit a single down the left-field line for a two-run lead. Key stat The win was Miami's fifth shutout of the season. Up next RHP Janson Junk (2-0, 3.73 ERA) is set to face the Twins for the first time in his career on Wednesday night against RHP Simeon Woods Richardson (3-4, 4.63).

Orioles finally win 3 in a row, beating the Cardinals 5-2. Can they keep it up?
It took 12 games for the 2024 Orioles to produce their first three-game winning streak. This year it took 53. Baltimore finally achieved that modest accomplishment Monday, beating the St. Louis Cardinals 5-2 for its third victory in a row. If the Orioles — who are still 15 games under .500 — are going to dig out of this hole, it's going to take more performances like this one. Charlie Morton and Dylan Carlson, a couple offseason additions who haven't performed well so far, led the way. "Charlie threw outstanding," said Carlson, who hit a three-run homer. "It was great playing behind him, great pace, bullpen did a great job. Guys up and down the lineup contributed, did a great job. Good team win." Of all the Orioles who have struggled this year, Morton is probably the most emblematic of the team's poor start. Baltimore signed him to a one-year deal instead of being more aggressive in the starting pitching market, and he promptly lost his first six starts. He has pitched mostly out of the bullpen of late. "I'm 41 years old. I can't really expect that I'm going to go out there and have the best year of my career. ... (But) I didn't expect to come in and have a 10 ERA," Morton said. "Waking up every day and thinking about how bad it was going, it was kind of surreal." On Monday, Morton (1-7) was given another chance to start, and he allowed two runs and four hits in six innings. That came after scoreless starts by Trevor Rogers and Dean Kremer in the team's previous two games. Carlson hasn't played much for the Orioles, but now he has homered in consecutive games. He's 5 for 12 over the last three games after going 1 for 22 before that. This three-game winning streak comes about a week after Baltimore fired manager Brandon Hyde and replaced him on an interim basis with Tony Mansolino. The new skipper said before Monday's game that outfielder Colton Cowser and infielder Jordan Westburg were going to Triple-A on rehab assignments. So, for the first time in a while, the news has been mostly good for the Orioles for a few days.
