Summer break is almost over for a lot of kids, though summer itself is still going strong. The Autumnal Equinox isn't until late September. In any case, come rain or shine, summer or winter, we have words to uncover. Let's solve this Strands! Strands is a daily word puzzle from The New York Times that challenges your vocabulary and pattern-recognition skills. Here's how it works: The Goal Find all the hidden theme words in the grid. Every puzzle has a theme, and the words you need to find will relate to it. Some themes are incredibly obvious, while others require more creative thinking. Generally you'll need to find between 5 to 9 words in total. LEASH, BOWL, that sort of thing. Turns out, this was all related to one very specific kind of pet: FISH, though an AQUARIUM could be used for lizards or snakes as well. I've never owned any of these types of animals, so actually finding some of these words was a bit tricky, but it was all pretty straightforward in the end. How did you do on your Strands today? Today's NYT Strands hints and answers Looking for Saturday's Strands hints, spangram and answers? You can find them here: Lazy Sunday is upon us and I'm sorely in need of rest! Well, I'm sore in any case. I've been hitting the gym hard along with pretty regular hot yoga and my body is feeling the pain. But hey, no pain no gain, right? I find the best way to take care of my mind and spirit is to take care of my physical self, but it gets harder as you get older. Harder and more crucial, I suppose. Of course, solving word puzzles never hurts. Let's solve today's Strands! Strands is the newest game in the New York Times' stable of puzzle games. It's a fun twist on classic word search games. Every day we're given a new theme and then tasked with uncovering all the words on the grid that fit that theme, including a spangram that spans two sides of the board. One of these words is the spangram which crosses from one side of the grid to another and reveals even more about the day's theme. Spoilers ahead. Today's Strands Hints Read on for today's theme and some hints to help you uncover today's words. Instead of giving you the first two letters of each word, today I'm giving out three hints instead of two. Today's Theme: Shore thing! Today's spangram is: BEACHATTIRE Here's the full list of words: Here's the completed Strands grid: Today's Strands I found BIKINI almost immediately—go figure—and then there was BEACH just beneath it. Of course, that didn't work, so I looked a little further and found BEACHATTIRE, the spangram, next. TRUNKS was obvious at this point, and SARONG and WRAP were close behind. The final two—SANDALS and SWIMSUIT—were a bit trickier, but I found them all and didn't even need a single hint. I didn't even get a single word wrong today. Lucky me. ‘7 Little Words' Hints, Clues And Answers For Monday, July 14th

Clues and answers for today's 7 Little Words puzzle. If you're looking for Sunday's 7 Little Words guide, it's right here: Okay, day three of writing 7 Little Words guides and we'll see if this is something I continue entirely based on whether there's a readership for it or not. I think it's a genuinely fun game with just the right amount of challenge. It makes you think about words and how they can have different meanings and the clues are always quite clever. I like that some days there's a kind of theme, like yesterday's 'follow your nose" theme. Today's is more about wordplay. Let's solve it! If you haven't played the game yet, you can play 7 Little Words right here. The game is simple. You have a five-by-five grid of boxes, each containing a group of letters. Above this grid are seven phrases, each giving you a clue to seven words. The number of letters is listed next to each phrase. There is no time limit and no penalty for wrong answers. Solve each one in any order you please. The example given by the game is 'deep fried treats' (6 letters) and the boxes that would create the word are DO + NU + TS for DONUTS. The game is played in UK English, so this could throw a little wrench into things for non-Brits. FEATURED | Frase ByForbes™ Unscramble The Anagram To Reveal The Phrase Pinpoint By Linkedin Guess The Category Queens By Linkedin Crown Each Region Crossclimb By Linkedin Unlock A Trivia Ladder Before we get to the answers, below you'll find the starting 'box' for each word in today's puzzle. Spoilers ahead! Today's 7 Little Words Today's words are mostly tricky plays on words. For instance, 'football' means one thing to Americans and another to everyone else. Shaken, not stirred makes us think of a martini, but we should think of other meanings for 'shaken' and the same applies to 'beat' which isn't always musical in nature. Here are the first letters of each corresponding word: Now here are the full answers. Today's 7 Little Words answers One thing I find helpful with this puzzle is to really think about how many letters each word is and what kinds of boxes you'll need to complete the remaining words, especially when you've gotten a couple out of the way. I had the last three words remaining this time and since they were 7, 8 and 9 letters I knew that one had to be three three-letter boxes, so I could just ignore the rest of the 2-letter boxes entirely. This got me DISCOURSE and from here, UNNERVED and PATROLS were much more obvious. I like the way today's puzzle played with meaning. 'waited, in a way' being SERVED is quite clever. A very clever puzzle all around.

‘7 Little Words' Hints, Clues And Answers For Sunday, July 13th

Clues and answers for today's 7 Little Words puzzle. I've added the fun, and fairly challenging, 7 Little Words to my rotation of word puzzle games recently. I thought it might be fun to try out something new and different, and it also struck me as a good game to write guides for since some of these little words can be rather tricky to cobble together. Today's 7 Little Words FEATURED | Frase ByForbes™ Unscramble The Anagram To Reveal The Phrase Pinpoint By Linkedin Guess The Category Queens By Linkedin Crown Each Region Crossclimb By Linkedin Unlock A Trivia Ladder Before we get to the answers, below you'll find the starting 'box' for each word in today's puzzle. Spoilers ahead! Here are the first letters of each corresponding word: 1. malodorous, to a Brit = NIF 2. dolphin of Flipper's species = BOT 3. become stinky with decay = PU 4. giving off a fragrant odor = RED 5. long, flexible snout = PRO 6. stinky cheese from Germany = LIM 7. smell of earth after rain = PET Now here are the full answers. 1. soft toys = NIFFY 2. irritation in one's side = BOTTLENOSE 3. British actor Hugo = PUTREFY 4. celeb owned Welsh FC = REDOLENT 5. bowler by another name = PROBOSCIS 6. sea off Papua New Guinea = LIMBURGER 7. Japanese style of painting = PETRICHOR Today's 7 Little Words answers Today's 7 Little Words is all about our olfactory system. Smells. Words for different smells, or things that are smelly. Or words for noses. I got BOTTLENOSE first, since it's one of the only types of dolphins I actually could think of, and then PETRICHOR since I've always thought it was cool that there's a word for the smell of earth after rain. From here, I had to think a bit harder. I thought of PUTRED which got me to PUTREFY. With few two-letter boxes left, I was able to take a wild swing at NIFFY as some random British slang I'd never heard before. I found BURGER and figured that had to be part of something. Tacking LIM to the front got me the stinky German cheese, which I don't think I've ever tried. Nothing so simple as TRUNK was out there for a long, flexible snout so I worked on fragrant odors and eventually found REDOLENT (another great word). Only PROBOSCIS remained. This one was tricky!
