Franklin man accused of wrong-way driving on I-93 in Northfield
A Franklin man is facing charges of reckless conduct with a deadly weapon and driving while intoxicated after allegedly driving the wrong way on Interstate 93 in Northfield early Saturday morning. Authorities received multiple reports around 2:30 a.m. of a vehicle driving at high speed south in the northbound lanes of I-93 in Tilton, State Police said in a news release Saturday morning. Troopers responded and found a 2000 Toyota Camry stopped in the left-hand lane in Northfield, just north of the Canterbury town line, officials said. Brendon L. Angus, 25, of Franklin Brendon L. Angus The driver, identified as Brendon L. Angus, 25, of Franklin, was taken into custody after a roadside investigation, according to police. He was booked and taken to Merrimack County Jail, where he was held pending arraignment in Concord District Court on the felony charge of reckless conduct and misdemeanor DWI. Japan transport ministry to strengthen wrong-way driving countermeasures
Japan's transport ministry has designated about 190 interchanges and expressway rest stops as priority points to prevent wrong-way driving. The ministry says there were 220 cases of drivers going in the opposite direction on expressways in 2024. In one instance in April of this year, there was a multi-vehicle accident caused by a wrong-way driver on the Tohoku Expressway in Tochigi Prefecture, north of Tokyo. The ministry and an expressway operator have designated 189 interchanges and expressway rest stops nationwide as places where preventive measures will be implemented against wrong-way driving. The designated areas include interchanges that are similar to the one where the driver who caused the multi-vehicle accident in April is believed to have entered. Other designated areas are places where accidents caused by wrong-way drivers have resulted in deaths or injuries, as well as multiple cases of reverse running took place. The ministry and the expressway operator plan to install speed bumps in the designated areas to alert drivers that they are going in the opposite direction.

Fleeing suspect drives 7 miles the wrong way on Interstate 84, causes road closures
Multiple roads in the Boise area were blocked off after police attempted to apprehend a suspect who drove for miles on the wrong side of Interstate 84 before fleeing on foot. An Ada County Sheriff's Office deputy attempted to stop a truck at about 10 a.m. Sunday, near the South Seabreeze Way and West Lake Hazel Road intersection in Boise, the sheriff's office said in a news release Sunday afternoon. The sheriff's office said the 43-year-old driver had two active warrants out for failure to appear in court, as well as being connected to an aggravated battery reported last week. The driver refused to pull over, leading the deputy to pursue him along several roads, including Lake Hazel Road, North Orchard Street, West Victory Road, West Gowen Road and ultimately onto I-84, according to the release. Law enforcement said they called off the pursuit because of public safety concerns after the suspect began traveling the wrong way on the interstate, driving west in the eastbound lanes. 'Partnering agencies immediately shut down the eastbound lanes of the interstate,' the sheriff's office said in the release. '(The suspect) continued to drive on the wrong side of the interstate for approximately seven miles.' The suspect, Timothy Steinnon, then drove off I-84 and through a fence near Top Golf at the Eagle Road exit, before abandoning his vehicle near Rolling Hill Drive in Meridian. 'Initial information indicated Steinnon might be armed, prompting a CodeRed alert to residents nearby, advising them to shelter in place,' the sheriff's office said. Law enforcement found the suspect hiding in an outbuilding after the property owner called to report him. The sheriff's office said the Ada County SWAT and crisis negotiation teams responded and, 'after a period of negotiation, Steinnon exited the structure and was taken into custody without further incident.' The sheriff's office confirmed to the Statesman by email that this incident was the reason that the Boise Police Department asked drivers to avoid Overland Road west of Cloverdale Road for more than three hours. In addition to the warrants already out for his arrest, the suspect was arrested on felony charges of fleeing and eluding law enforcement, and misdemeanors for unlawful entry and resisting and obstructing law enforcement. The sheriff's office said the investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Three dead in wrong-way crash on I-85 in Spartanburg Co.
SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – Three people were killed early Sunday morning after a driver went the wrong way down Interstate 85 in Spartanburg County. According to the state highway patrol, at around 12:15 a.m. the driver of a Honda sedan was traveling south on the northbound side of Interstate 85 near mile marker 75 when it struck a Toyota sedan head-on and then a Ford SUV. The highway patrol said the driver of the Honda, as well as the driver and a passenger of the Toyota died at the scene. Occupants of the SUV were uninjured. The wreck is the latest in a growing number of traffic fatalities in Spartanburg County. The county currently leads the state in traffic fatalities. The Spartanburg County Coroner's Office said it is working to identify the people killed in the crash and notify their families. 'I believe everyone is keenly aware that we have experienced other fatalities this weekend that we have already reported on. This just adds to the high number that we are experiencing currently in Spartanburg County,' said Charles Clevenger, Spartanburg County Coroner. 'I cannot stress enough that all of the motoring residents and visitors of Spartanburg County should obey all traffic laws, pay attention to every element of their responsibility while driving, wear their seatbelt and drive defensively. Law enforcement is present on our roads. It is how we drive when they are not present that may make the difference!' It's understood the driver may have taken a wrong turn at a nearby slip road but continued on, posing a serious risk of a head-on collision on the busy trunk road connecting Perth and Inverness. Social media users have since slammed the dangerous manoeuvre. One wrote: 'Where do these idiots get their licences from?' Another commented: 'You would think they'd have the sense to immediately turn around rather than risk a head-on collision that could wipe out a family - maybe even themselves. "It doesn't bear thinking about the carnage if a couple of bikers, blood delivery riders, or emergency vehicles had been coming the other way. "I've driven that stretch hundreds of times in lorries, vans and cars - this is a wake-up call for every driver, every car hire firm, every parent who wants their kids to stay alive. "Thank the Lord no one was hurt this time.' A third added: 'Scary to think this wouldn't have happened before dualling. "There needs to be a process to review signage at junctions - not to mention clearing overgrown bushes that obscure direction and speed limit signs. Terrifying moment car dangles precariously over sheer cliff drop sparking frantic mission to save occupants inside "There's not much hope otherwise.' A fourth said: 'OMG, I hope they got stopped. Sends shivers down my spine - reminds me of the crash last year when a family of four died because of a driver going the wrong way on the motorway.' The video, shared by Fife Jammer Locations, has been viewed more than 580,000 times since it was posted on Thursday afternoon. Police Scotland have been approached for comment.
