Ukrainian intelligence explains how Russia shapes African elite loyal to Kremlin
Russia is increasing its presence on the African continent, using educational and youth programmes as a tool for long-term influence. Source: Major Andrii Yusov, spokesperson for Defence Intelligence of Ukraine (DIU), quoted by DIU's press service Quote: "African education and sport are increasingly being used by the aggressor state as instruments of hybrid influence with a view to forming a new generation of political and managerial elites loyal to the Kremlin." Details: To this end, Russia consistently allocates state-funded university quotas for citizens of African countries, primarily in agriculture, engineering, education and medicine. Yusov said that leading African universities are planning to launch Russian language courses and professional development programmes for teachers. In the future, educational programmes will be aligned with Russian standards. According to the Kremlin's plan, this will allow Russian narratives to become firmly established in the education systems of African countries, DIU reports. The Russians are paying particular attention to working with young people through sports initiatives. Support Ukrainska Pravda on Patreon!

Boys and Girls Clubs celebrate 125 years, Cape Breton executive director marks 20
It was a day filled with fun activities at the Boys and Girls Club of Cape Breton in Whitney Pier, N.S., on Friday as clubs across Canada marked their 125th anniversary. Fourteen-year-old Keanan MacKenzie has been coming to the club in Whitney Pier for three years. He sees the value of what's being offered to youth. 'I was looking for something to do after school,' he said. MacKenzie is a student at Whitney Pier Memorial Middle School across the street from the youth club. '(It) kind of gives them something to do so they're not roaming the streets, or trying to get involved in bad activities.' Executive director Chester Borden has become the face of the Whitney Pier club over the past two decades. 'On May 6th, I celebrated my 20th year,' Borden said. He added one of the most rewarding parts about his work is seeing graduates of the club grow into adults who give back to their communities. 'The young lady over there doing the face painting, she's volunteering today,' Borden said. 'She said to me, 'Do you remember when I used to come to the club?' So, there you go. She's 25 now.' Another example is Ryan Delaney, who has Down syndrome and at age 23 is back at the club as a staff member. 'I used to come here as a kid, and I came back when I was at school and I came back to work,' Delaney said. The Eastern director for Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada John Burton said BGC Clubs started 125 years ago in Saint John. He added there are currently 23 clubs in Atlantic Canada. Burton is from Cape Breton and said he is well-acquainted with the work being done by Borden and his staff. 'He's been a staple,' Burton said. 'Very good mentor, not only to the kids but to staff and community members as well.' Cape Breton Regional Police Chief Robert Walsh, who presented Borden with a plaque commemorating his 20 years, said that in some cases the Whitney Pier club has kept youth off the streets and out of trouble. 'It gives them inclusion, a place to go and network, make friends, participate in sports, opportunities that they might not otherwise have,' Walsh said. 'We've had people come out of this club who are now serving police officers.' Club member MacKenzie may follow in those footsteps with the opportunities he's been given through BGC. 'I really want to become a police officer but at the same time I'm thinking about becoming a pilot in the Air Force,' MacKenzie said. For more Nova Scotia news, visit our dedicated provincial page

Job Corp Centers react to ruling blocking closures
MORGANFIELD, Ky. (WEHT) — Job Corp Centers around the country are celebrating a small victory after months of fighting to stay open. Earl C. Clements Job Corp Center Director Jessa Gough says it's been a whirlwind. Yesterday she said staff members were handed termination letters days after the U.S. Department of Labor announced plans to eliminate Job Corp operations nationwide. Less than 20 minutes later staff learned that a federal judge ruled to block the plans and prevent the Trump administration from closing Job Corps Centers. President Trump's decision was based on an internal review and transparency report saying it has been a failed experiment to help America's youth and calls it financially unsustainable. But Gough disagrees and says the report used data from 2023 not the most recent numbers. 'We were coming out of the covid pandemic and centers had sent all of their students home during covid,'Gough said. 'We had no students on our campus but they used 2023 statistics when we were trying to rebuild our program.' The center in Morganfield employs over 300 people and Gough says getting to this step was not an easy feat. From social media to the community she says support came from everywhere. 'You know this is why I talk to our staff and students and I told them this is why we have a voice and this is why we stand up and fight for causes that you believe in and you do it in a positive and professional manner,' Gough said. BUT THE FIGHT IS NOT OVER YET. THE FEDERAL JUDGE ORDERED THE GOVERNMENT TO STAND DOWN UNTIL A FURTHER RULING IN THE CASE. The next court date is June 17. 'If that hearing goes in our way and in our favor that June 30 date to eliminate the Job Corp program and staff would be on halt that we would go past that June 30 date because this would then have to play out in the court and we don't know how long that will take,' Gough said.
