Bihar electoral rolls revision: No change in instructions on procedure, clarifies EC
The Election Commission on Sunday clarified that there was 'no change in instructions' on the special intensive revision of the electoral rolls in Bihar. Earlier in the day, the office of the Bihar chief electoral officer had said that all measures were being taken to facilitate voters to complete their documentation as part of the revision exercise. 'These existing voters will have time to submit the documents even after first submitting their Enumeration Forms,' the chief electoral officer had said. The chief electoral officer had issued public notices in Hindi newspapers on Sunday saying that if voters were unable to submit their documents, they could submit only enumeration forms to block-level officers. Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge claimed on X that the Election Commission published the advertisements in response to pressure from the Opposition and civil society. 'The electors can submit their documents any time before July 25, 2025,' the Election Commission said. 'After publication of draft Electoral Rolls, if any document is deficient, [electoral registration officers] can obtain such documents, from the electors whose name appears in the draft Electoral Rolls, during scrutiny in the Claims and Objection period.' The Election Commission said that till 6 pm on Sunday, it had received the enumeration forms of 1,69,49,408 voters, or 21.46% of the voting population. It added that 7.25% of the forms had been uploaded on the commission's ECINET app. No one was satisfied with current voter rolls: EC chief Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Sunday defended the ongoing special intensive revision of Bihar's electoral rolls, claiming that the exercise had to carried out as no one was satisfied with the current voter rolls, The Hindu reported. Kumar said that in the past four months, electoral registration officers, district election officers and all 36 chief electoral officers in the country held nearly 5,000 meetings with 28,000 political party representatives. 'The EC has also invited all recognised political parties for interaction,' he said, according to The Hindu. 'No one was satisfied with the current status of electoral rolls for one reason or the other.' Revision of electoral rolls The special intensive revision of the electoral rolls in Bihar was announced by the Election Commission on June 24, ahead of the Assembly elections expected to be held in the state in October or November. As part of the exercise, persons whose names were not on the 2003 voter list will need to submit proof of eligibility to vote. This means that 2.9 crore out of the state's 7.8 crore voters – or about 37% of the electors – will have to submit documentary evidence. The special intensive revision guidelines issued earlier stated that the voters born before July 1, 1987, must show proof of their date and place of birth, while those born between July 1, 1987, and December 2, 2004, must also submit documents establishing the date and place of birth of one of their parents. Those born after December 2, 2004, will need proof of date of birth for themselves and both parents. If the officers are satisfied with the details provided, the voters will be re-enrolled to a new voter list by electoral registration officers. If not, they will be removed from the voter lists. A draft roll will be published on August 1 and the final roll will be out on September 30. disenfranchising more than 2.5 crore voters, as they may not be able to produce the necessary documents.

Ad Shoot Organiser Arrested For Allegedly Raping French Tourist In Udaipur
Udaipur: The casting director of an advertisement shoot has been arrested by the Udaipur Police for allegedly raping a French tourist in the Rajasthan city. The accused, Sidharth Ojha alias Pushpraj, was hustled into the office of the Superintendent of Police (SP) amid a huge protest by Congress workers. The protesters ran towards the rape accused when he was brought to the SP's office. Former chief minister Ashok Gehlot, who is from the Congress, in a post on X had said the crime has tarnished the reputation of the state which is popular with tourists. "The next day, as soon as the matter was reported to the police, we filed an FIR and recorded a statement of the survivor. We also went to the crime scene. She came to Udaipur on June 22 itself to shoot an ad for VIVO. They had already done some shootings at a few locations in the city," the police officer said. After the shoot, there was a party at a restaurant where one of the crew members, Siddharth alias Pushpraj, who was also the man who organised the shoot, took the French woman out of the restaurant on the pretext of taking a smoke break, Mr Goyal said. However, he took her to his room and raped her, the police officer said. The accused is a resident of Chittorgarh. He was arrested from a highway. He has admitted to the crime, the police officer said, adding they will file a chargesheet in a week and fast track the case. The police said the accused and the survivor did not know each other before the day of the crime. The French woman is in a stable condition, police sources said. She has been living in Delhi since November 2024 and has done ad shoots in the past. The accused and a business partner run a company called 'Udaipur Casting Call'. They took the contract for the ad shoot. They have been working with another company in Jodhpur for the shoot.

Maha Kumbh stampede death toll: Akhilesh Yadav says Uttar Pradesh Government lied; cites media report
Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday (June 10, 2025) accused the Uttar Pradesh Government of lying about the death toll in the January 29 Maha Kumbh stampede and said that those who provide "false statistics" are not worthy of public trust. Mr. Yadav made the remarks in a post on X, citing a BBC report which claimed that 82 people died in the stampede. Former Delhi CM Atishi claims security deployed at Kalkaji JJ cluster under demolition threat
Former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi on Tuesday (June 10, 2025) claimed that a large number of security personnel had been deployed in Bhoomiheen Camp in Kalkaji ahead of a demolition drive. Eviction notices by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) have been pasted at houses in the Jhuggi-Jhopri Camp, warning "encroachers" to leave the spot within three days or face action. The Camp, where most residents are migrant workers, has seen demolition drives thrice in the last few years — in May and June this year and July 2023. 'Tomorrow, the BJP is going to run bulldozers over the Bhoomiheen Camp. Today, the slum residents there were planning to protest, so the BJP government deployed thousands of police and CRPF personnel,' she said. Bhojpuri singer Neha Singh Rathore booked for sedition over Pahalgam posts: ‘If you have the guts…'
Folk singer Neha Singh Rathore, known for her politically charged Bhojpuri ballads, was booked on Sunday for allegedly posting provocative messages on social media that authorities felt could potentially incite 'communal tensions' in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22. The complaint, filed by a local resident, Abhay Pratap Singh, accused Rathore of sharing posts that 'attempted to promote sectarian animosity' and 'endangered the nation's sovereignty, unity, and integrity.' A case was registered against Rathore under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) – including Section 152, a provision that was introduced after the repeal of the colonial-era sedition law (Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code) – as well as the Information Technology Act, the Uttar Pradesh Police told PTI. Her remarks came in wake of the attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, where terrorists allegedly targeted and killed 26 people, mostly tourists, after verifying their religious identities. 'In this situation, singer and poetess Neha Singh Rathore, using her Twitter (now X) handle @nehafolksinger, made objectionable posts that can adversely affect national integrity,' the complaint said. Rathore responded defiantly in a video posted to X, accusing the government of attempting to divert attention from its failures in responding to the tragedy. The First Information Report (FIR) was filed at Hazratganj police station under Section 152 of the BNS, a provision that criminalises acts that endanger India's unity and integrity. The provision, introduced after the repeal of the colonial-era sedition law (Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code), penalises actions or attempts that incite secession, armed rebellion, or subversive activities, or encourage separatist sentiments destabilising the nation. However, courts have cautioned against misuse of the law. In December 2024, the Rajasthan High Court, in Tejender Pal Singh vs State of Rajasthan, warned that Section 152 must not be wielded as a weapon against legitimate political dissent. Justice Arun Monga, noting the provision's roots in the old sedition law, said it 'revives the essence of sedition under a new guise' and emphasised that it applies only to deliberate acts undertaken with malicious intent. The Court also pointed out a safeguard within the law's explanation that lawful criticism of government policies does not fall within its ambit — balancing national security with freedom of expression. The Court's warning echoes broader judicial concerns. In 2022, the Supreme Court had suspended all pending trials under Section 124A and advised the government to reconsider the sedition law, a move that led to the verbal announcement of its repeal. Yet, critics argue that Section 152, now in force under the BNS, replicates many of the same flaws. Section 152 criminalises 'acts endangering the sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India,' but crucially, it does not define what constitutes such endangerment. This vagueness leaves the provision open to broad interpretation by law enforcement — meaning that a critical speech, a controversial social media post, or even an expression of sympathy toward a contentious figure could become grounds for arrest. Previous brushes with authorities This is not Rathore's first brush with authorities. Last year, the singer was served a police notice over her viral song UP mein ka ba ('What's happening in UP?') that criticised the Uttar Pradesh government over an anti-encroachment drive. Rathore and her husband, Himanshu, recounted how police attempts to serve the notice created unease in their New Delhi neighbourhood, with some residents reportedly asking the couple to move out. Despite mounting pressures, Rathore, in 2024, had insisted she would not be silenced. 'Criticism is the soap that keeps democracy clean,' she had said in an interview with The Indian Express. 'Enough artists are singing praises of the government for awards. I sing for the common man.' Back then, the fallout from her activism had deeply affected her family. Her mother, living in rural Bihar, was hospitalised from stress, while Rathore recounted harassment and threats in public spaces. Yet Rathore, who composes, writes, and performs her songs independently, had said: 'If they try to muzzle my voice, they are only making me bigger — and themselves smaller,' she had said.
