Chinese AI stocks to extend DeepSeek-driven run as Beijing counts on growth boost
Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) stocks are expected to defy a slowdown across industries, as the mainland relies on the technology to boost business efficiency and revive economic growth, according to investors and analysts. Advertisement Companies including Meituan and Xiaomi were set to benefit from a wave of AI integration that would transform business models, according to Morgan Stanley, as investors look for new winners after DeepSeek's breakthrough in generative AI technology. China Asset Management, one of the mainland's biggest mutual-fund firms, said last month that the country's AI adoption – estimated at 5 per cent penetration at present – was on the cusp of explosive growth, similar to personal computers in the 1980s. 'AI will probably become a key driver for China's modernisation,' said Yao Pei, an analyst at Huachuang Securities, in a report this month. 'There are lots of catalysts for AI, and AI is expected to penetrate into every industry,' notably electronics, computing and media, Yao said. DeepSeek's surprising ascent earlier this year put China's technology stocks back into the spotlight, spurring optimism that the country would be able to lead the world in AI in spite of US export curbs. Investors are identifying new prospects in the industry after making bets on platform-based developers of large language models such as Alibaba Group Holding and Tencent Holdings . Alibaba owns the Post. Advertisement Unlike the US, which had an edge in AI computing, China was focused on efficiency – emphasising revenue generated by AI-enabled offerings and cost savings achieved through high productivity, the US investment bank said.

‘Can't stick to old-fashioned farming': China's rural growers embrace livestreaming revolution
YANTAI, July 9 — Gao Chaorong knows what it takes to turn out good crops of sweet potatoes, peanuts and wheat, but tasty produce is no longer enough to draw China's app savvy crowd. To prevent her crops from rotting unsold in the fields, the 56-year-old is now back in school, attending a 'hands-on livestreaming bootcamp' to learn to take her vegetables straight to consumers via their mobile phones. Gao and her classmates are gunning for online popularity as China's 'new farmers' — people who use the latest technology in agricultural production or services. The number of new rural creators has soared 52 per cent on China's TikTok sister app Douyin over the past year as they hope to capitalise on the country's one billion internet users, the world's most. On the Instagram-like Chinese app Xiaohongshu, the hashtag 'new farmers' has been viewed more than 227 million times. Local authorities are even sending some officials to learn livestreaming and help farmers get online. 'It's been harder for farmers to sell their produce, especially offline,' said Chen Xichuan, a Communist Party cadre in the small Shandong city of Pingdu who was among those asked to set an example and help growers take their trade online. Live in action outdoors, Chen squeezed a ripe green pear he held up to a phone secured on a tripod. 'Just look at the juice,' Chen, wearing a straw hat to shield himself from the blazing sun, told his viewers. 'Take it home, taste it, and make fresh pear juice for your children,' said Chen. Users can make purchases at the click of a button, as well as comment during live broadcasts or ask sellers about their products. The Tian sisters, livestreamers and e-commerce experts born to farmers, organise the training camp monthly, charging around 5,000 yuan (US$698) for four days of intensive lessons and 'lifelong' follow-ups. Students learn how to hook audiences using compelling scripts, props and visually appealing backgrounds. In the classroom, a dozen students watched as Gao held up a sliced eggplant and gushed, with barely a pause or a stutter, about the best way to cook the vegetable. 'Remember, when you're selling products, it's not just about memorising your sales script,' teacher Tian Dongying said, scribbling on a whiteboard as she reviewed Gao's mock livestreaming session. 'You need to understand who you're talking to,' she said. Tian, who founded the livestreaming school with two sisters and a cousin, said all her students deserved 'full marks'. 'They've never done this kind of thing before and just being able to stand up and speak is already a challenge,' she told AFP. 'Because they want to earn this money, they have to push past their own limits.' Gao told AFP she attended the bootcamp because farmers like her face fierce competition and 'can't stick to the old-fashioned way of farming anymore'. She grows her crops at the foot of Shandong's Maling Mountain and has started to post videos on Douyin, gaining more than 7,000 followers. 'Agriculture is becoming the cornerstone of China's ability to support its population,' she said. President Xi Jinping has identified rural revitalisation as a key priority for China's development since taking office in 2012. He has also emphasised the vital role that agriculture plays in China, the world's top producer of commodities including rice and wheat. 'A country must first strengthen agriculture to make itself strong,' Xi said in 2022. Digital tools such as livestreaming have transformed public perceptions of rural life in China, said Pan Wang, an associate professor at Australia's University of New South Wales. 'Traditionally, Chinese farmers have been depicted as working from sunrise to sunset — poor, old-fashioned, disconnected from technology,' Wang told AFP. However, hurdles remain for farmers as they try to become more tech-savvy. 'Livestreaming and making videos are all new,' farmer Gao said. 'For young people, clicking around on a computer... feels effortless, but we have to put in twice the effort to learn these things.' — AFP

Chinese kindergarten investigated after children found to have high lead levels, state media says
A Chinese national flag flutters in the wind in between a high-rise residential and office complex in Beijing, China, on Monday, May 19, 2014. (AP / Andy Wong) Chinese authorities have arrested eight people after more than 200 children who fell ill in the northwestern province of Gansu were found to have abnormally high levels of lead in their blood, the country's state broadcaster reported on Tuesday. The children attended a privately owned kindergarten in Gansu's Tianshui, which was set up in 2022, and had 251 children enrolled, the broadcaster, CCTV, said. Investigations had found lead in food served to students, it said. Online media outlets Jimu and The Cover, citing parents, said students' symptoms included stomach and leg pain, loss of appetite and hair loss. CCTV said authorities were still investigating the kindergarten's staff, including its principal and legal representative. Reuters was not able to establish contact details for the school or verify the information independently. Food safety has improved in China following a series of scandals, including the 2008 discovery of toxic infant milk, which undermined public trust and consumer confidence. Inspections by regulators in 2022 found safety issues were more common in the catering industry and agricultural products, according to state media reports. CCTV said investigators tested 223 samples of food from the school. They found two samples - a red date cake and a corn sausage roll - had lead content of 1052 mg/kg and 1340 mg/kg respectively, far above the official limit of 0.5 mg/kg, it said. The report said investigators traced the lead to paint whose packaging had clearly marked it as inedible. So far, 201 children have been admitted to hospital and all families are receiving free medical treatment, the broadcaster said, citing local authorities. 'The incident has caused physical and mental harm to the children and parents of Peixin kindergarten, and we are very sad. We will learn profound lessons,' the broadcaster said, citing local authorities. (Reporting by Farah Master and the Beijing newsroom)

Advertisement The Hangzhou-based company listed 10 new positions online, including two internships focused on large language models. Other roles include deep learning researchers, core systems engineers, front-end developers and full-stack engineers, based in either Hangzhou or Beijing. The job descriptions were all in Chinese, and the company highlighted its competitive edge from 'top-tier GPU [graphics processing unit] clusters and rapid experimental iteration on potential ideas'. Recruits would 'collaborate with team members who excel at both research and engineering, focusing on AGI [artificial general intelligence] that balances practical results and academic depth', according to the listings. Microsoft-owned LinkedIn has largely withdrawn from mainland China , suggesting DeepSeek is hungry for Chinese talent overseas.
